Basij – “Organization for the Mobilization of the Oppressed”
Its Orwellian name has all the aura of Mao’s Red Guards and was created to suppress citizens who might have some resistance to “Supreme” authority. It is an armed volunteer offshoot of the IRGC whose members wear no uniforms – a semi-secret police – and were the most involved in the recent mass killing of dissidents. The Basij is also the home of the Morality Police.
For a citizen’s revolt to succeed it is the Basij that must defeated first by armed citizens. Though the Basij didn’t exist before 1979, Iranian students in the US described their fears of saying too much because the Shah’s government had spies among the students. The Ayatollah Khomenei didn’t invent the idea of hidden enforcers, he expanded on it to maintain control during times of instability.

By Orwellian, it’s more like the islamic definition of oppressed. Like in qur’an 2:193 and 8:39 – “Keep fighting them until oppression is no more and all religion is for allah”. In other words, Iranians who were not blindly going along w/ islamic diktats were “oppressing” all devout mohammedans just by doing that
As for Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, his record was mixed. I know that Goldie Ghamari only faults him for not cracking down harder on the shi’a activists, while he focussed on the commies – the Tudeh Party, the MEK…. However, that regime was not an anti-islamic regime. While it did have friendly relations w/ Israel, it also had friendly relations w/ Pakistan. Hopefully, the next Iranian government will completely snap all relations w/ islam, going to the extent of politely, but firmly, exiting the OIC, and establishing their Israel embassy in Jerusalem
