How is Israel doing? In the first day of hostilities, it eliminated Iran’s supreme leader. The same morning, it killed at least forty of Iran’s senior civilian and military leaders, including the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and dozens of IRGC commanders. It killed the head of Iran’s army, and the director of Iran’s intelligence. It has been destroying virtually at will as many missiles, launchers, launch tunnels, and launch assets as possible, limited only by the number of sorties its 200 planes and pilots can fly each day to Iran and back. It has created a secure corridor for Israeli and American aircraft to fly to Tehran by destroying Iranian interception and radar capabilities, along with command-and-control systems.

Former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei of Iran made the same mistake as Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah. He ignored the fact that Israel changed on October 7. He didn’t believe it could happen to him. He fell asleep at the wheel.
When the details of his elimination become clear, jaws will drop. The deception, the pinpoint intelligence, the quality of the execution, the creativity. The fact that Israel had a photo of Ali Khamenei’s body is beyond comprehension. It should spell things out for the ayatollahs who are still there, and for their situation.

Considering that “dozens” of IRGC senior commanders were killed in just a handful of the 500 attacks carried out on the first day by Israeli planes, it is almost certain that at least one hundred members of the IRGC and the Iranian National Army were killed. That would mean in the first day of the attack, when Iran claims that 201 Iranians were killed, Israel has managed to attain a civilian-to-combatant ratio of 1:1. The UN has said that in all the wars fought since World War II, the average civilian-to-combatant ratio of 9:1. In Afghanistan, the Americans managed to bring that ratio own to 4:1, and in Iraq, to 3:1. In Iran today, the Americans and Israelis have achieved a civilian-to-combatant ratio of about 1:1. That is unheard-of in the annals of modern warfare.
There have been news reports breathlessly suggesting that with Khamenei gone, the IRGC now faces a “war of succession.” Perhaps. I tend to think that given the likely lifespan of any future IRGC commanders, the war will be over not who will succeed the supreme leader, but who can avoid doing so. If I were an IRGC bigshot, I’d head out of town right now, possibly dressed in a chador or better still, a niqab. The remote Alborz mountains are said to be beautiful this time of year.

Looks like Israel and the US are fighting 2 parallel wars in Iran. As per Hegseth & Caine’s press conference that just ended, our objectives are purely military – their missile sites, their drones and so on. Whereas Israel’s objective is that regime – the most recent news seems to be that their parliament building in Tehran has been demolished
I think the estimates of how long this war will last is very conservative/pessimistic, given that Iran’s political leadership is being taken out by the Israelis, and once that’s gone, there will be no point to the military “resistance”. In the meantime, speaking of Israel, looks like another front has opened in South Lebanon, where Israel has marked several villages that are still dominated by Hizbullah. Given the failure of the Lebanese government to disband Hizbullah despite what Israel managed 2 years ago, Israel should invade, while it’s still in a war w/ Iran, and just annex everything south of the Litani river, including Tyre

Spot on! The only thing holding up the end of the war is at what point the remaining IRGC, Quds Force and the “morality police” and those suppressing the protests fold and surrender unconditionally. Still many missile barrages plague Israel, with a few missiles getting through. I wish that all Israelis would heed the air raid sirens and get into their safe rooms until the all clear is texted to them. It is a royal pain, but a necessity.
It will take time, but once Israel figures out the location of the rocket launchers and the missile stores, they will systematically destroy them.
