The Islamic Republic of Iran is infamous for waging proxy wars and multi-front wars. Now it is faced with a formidable confrontation from opponents who are bombarding it from the sea and the air, and now may challenge it on the ground.
It remains to be seen whether the Islamic Republic of Iran’s staunch allies, such as Russia and China, or its proxies, such as the Houthis of Yemen, will engage. Prediction: likely not. All China cares about is its economy, Russia has merely issued a condemnation from afar, but is likely hoping that the conflict with Iran will tie up resources to aid Ukraine for an extended period. And the Houthis, according to Middle East Eye:
“The Houthis are still studying the situation and will make their decision based on the challenges facing Iran,” Fatehi bin Lazreq, editor of the Aden al-Ghad newspaper, told Middle East Eye. “If they determine that the threat to the Iranian regime is existential, they will decide to fully engage in the war.”
Should the Houthis engage, they, too, will face existential threat.
The war is expanding, as was to be expected, and already underway is an as yet unpredictable longterm shift in regional dynamics. According to the Associated Press, “The Kurdish groups are widely seen as the most well-organized segment of the fragmented Iranian opposition and are believed to have thousands of trained fighters. Their entry into the war could pose a significant challenge to the embattled authorities in Tehran and could also risk pulling Iraq further into the conflict.”

The CIA is working to arm Kurdish forces with the aim of fomenting a popular uprising in Iran, multiple people familiar with the plan told CNN.
The Trump administration has been in active discussions with Iranian opposition groups and Kurdish leaders in Iraq about providing them with military support, the sources said.
Iranian Kurdish armed groups have thousands of forces operating along the Iraq-Iran border, primarily in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Several of the groups have released public statements since the beginning of the war, hinting at imminent action and urging Iranian military forces to defect.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been striking Kurdish groups and said it targeted Kurdish forces with dozens of drones, CNN reported.
Trump spoke with the president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI), Mustafa Hijri, according to a senior Iranian Kurdish official cited by CNN. KDPI was one of the groups targeted by the IRGC.
Iranian Kurdish opposition forces are expected to take part in a ground operation in Western Iran in the coming days, the senior Iranian Kurdish official told CNN….

The Kurdish army with US close air support will be a major problem for what remains of Iran’s military. The Iranians are no longer under a single command. Each Iranian fighting group has its own command structure because the U.S. has jammed all their communications. Also, the Iranians are unlikely to surrender to the Kurds, because the Kurds will kill them on the spot. But, the Kurds will eventually be victorious and take back Iran.
There are rumors that Israel has elite commando units in Iran, but at this point I discount that as misinformation as part if a PsyOps plan.

Mosques seem to be the breeding ground and headquarters for terrorism around the world. Depending on which Kurds are being armed, this is not a good look
First of all, in Iraq, the Kurdish leader of Irbil – Barzani – sent messages of condolences the day Khamenei died! That alone would alienate him and his forces from Iranians, including Kurdish Iranians. I get it – the Iraqi Kurds used to be suppressed under Saddam, so they tended to be more sympathetic towards the islamic regime across the border. But that’s precisely what doesn’t endear themselves to the Iranians
Also, contrary to all the myths we’ve been sold about the Kurds aspiring to have one Kurdish nation, fact remains that there are differences b/w the Kurds of the different countries. The Kurds of Iraq and Syria have no wish to be a part of those countries, given their historic persecution by Saddam, Assad and now the HTS regime in Damascus. Similarly, the Kurds of Turkey have no love lost for the Turks. So all of them may indeed wish to be a part of a separate nation, probably still muslim. Also, they too don’t treat their non-muslim denizens fairly – Assyrians, Yazidis, Syriacs….
But Iranian Kurds are different, and pro-Iranian. There is no active secessionist movement of Kurds in Iran, or else, we’d have read about it. Also, like other Iranians, they too are sick of islam and want to be a part of a non-islamic state. When Mahsa Amini – a Kurdish girl – was killed 4 years ago, all of Iran rose in protest against her killing, not just Kurdish Iranians. In the current uprising, the most prominent starting point of this revolt was not so much in Farsi areas like Isfahan or Shiraz, but rather in the Kurdish province of Ilam. In short, the Iranian Kurds are very much a part of this uprising, not b’cos they want a separate state, but b’cos they want a part of this struggle for self determination of the Iranian people
Aside from wanting an end to the islamic republic, one thing that the Iranians hold dear is the sovereignty and unity of their country: they don’t want to see it broken up. Anybody who does that is likely to be hated. It’s a good thing that Sec Hegseth clarified yesterday that US troops are carrying out their own missions, independently of anybody else who’s operating in Iran. We didn’t support an independent Kurdistan in Iraq, where they indeed wanted it, but now we’re supposedly supporting one in Iran, where they don’t?
The last thing we need is the CIA assisting any separatist campaigns in Iran and losing ourselves the support of the Iranian people, which has been remarkable and historically w/o precedent (except maybe for Ukrainians welcoming the Nazi Germans during WWII due to their anger at the Holodomor). In fact, given the general ignorance in the US about the region, that is something we should just leave to either the Israelis, or to Reza Pahlavi and his team. The latter has been doing a good job promising Iranian ethnic minorities – Kurds, Balochis, Lors, Azeris…. that their rights would be protected in a democratic Iran.

The whole idea months ago was for the Iranian people themselves to takeover their country, end the jihadist takeover and kick them out, de-Islamize and have their own government which they themselves elect. Instead of joining the massive momentum of the demonstrations of the Iranian people they send two yoyos to make a deal with the jihadists. This resulted in more than a month of delay in assisting the people and the IRGC/Bajir jihadists killing tens of thousands of demonstrators, and lots of stalling time for them to prepare. Now the window and momentum may have been lost and you now have this extra Kurdish event deflecting from the original desire of the Iranian people to de-Islamize. Now the situation can get complex, an endless war situation, and focus on the original idea of the peoples demonstations – lost. (I believe the IRGC even hit the Burj-Al Arab which is an iconic symbol with no military value.)
When seeing all those Shaheed drones being fired all over the place, did someone forget to prepare for the possibility of thousands of discount drones being fired at everyone in the region? Did they ask the Ukrainians for help and knowhow as they are today the foremost experts in shooting down those discount drones and used to be the main weapons manufacturer of the defunct Sovjet Union?

As for China they have a very serious internal problem going on. President Xi has picked a life and death fight with the PLA generals and 8 of them and counting have somehow died. The PLA generals don’t want to be Xi’s private Army and turn China into another North Korea complete with a XI dynasty. As far as I understand he went over the heads of the CPC and did not consult or get permission first. So its very dramatic what is going on there. Who knows – maybe China will join the ROC (Republic of China) in Taiwan instead of getting into a civil war.

Editorial glitch: What I assume is an AI image meant to be Kurdish fighters has them under the flag of the Republic of Ireland a with RoI badges on their uniforms. I am assuming there are actual photos of Peshmerga fighters available.

Good – they took down that bogus AI illustration. You have to be careful with that AI Slop all over the Internet. I use AI images to illustrate my own newsletter with other curated images – It’s tough to maintain visual interest without violating copyright of others (not applicable to AI art according to some courts). But you cannot trust AI – again, I use lots of AI engines for research and even analysis but you can see the limitations in an LLM’s “reasoning” and access to training data (like lots of Wikipedia propaganda and other biased databases). CHECK the work coming out of AI images – indeed, in writing for publication it’s not proofreading or even English grammar that is the most difficult – but FACT CHECKING! You learn a lot of what you thought you knew is actually false or wrong. Good writing or commentary or reportage is tough and time consuming.
Thanks for responding to your commentators – and thanks to the other comments for help getting that ridiculous Irish flag squad removed. Sadly, the Irish Republic would probably support the Iranian regime, fortunately they are technically neutral and stick to UN peace keeping. I am taking a similar stance in America’s recent overseas military endeavors. (Fact checking reveals they are all lying to us about everything.) I hope the Peshmerga and other Kurds aren’t being set up to be sacrificed as a distraction or ineffective gambit.
