There’s a disturbing irony that the Islamic State (ISIS) is more honest about what Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa actually is than President Donald Trump and other Western leaders who have endorsed this jihadist thug, who plays any and everyone as he sees fit.
Al-Sharaa’s history shows up the dangerous and lethal manipulator that he really is.
He was formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani when he was head of the Jabhat al-Nusra (JN) group. In April 2013, ISIS founder and leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi released an audio statement reaffirming that the JN group was part of the Islamic State in Iraq (ISI). Al-Baghdadi also announced at the time of his announcement about JN that the two “would henceforth be collectively known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham,” which is why the group is still known in the West as ISIS. (The following year, the group rebranded itself simply as the Islamic State.)
Here you can see that al-Jolani, a.k.a. al-Sharaa, is no different from the savage al-Baghdadi, who trusted him. But al-Jolani ended up double-crossing al-Baghdadi. Within days, al-Jolani rejected the union of JN and ISI, and instead, he “pledged continued allegiance to al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.” This became a critical juncture: the battle for preeminence between Sunni jihadist groups in Syria was on.
In February 2014, al-Qaeda formally disassociated itself from ISIS. Just a few months later, ISIS stormed into Mosul, and Baghdadi announced the restoration of the Islamic caliphate under his leadership.
Al-Sharaa is indeed a puppet without a soul. He’ll serve the cause of jihad under whoever leads it, in wherever direction he chooses to go.
Al-Sharaa has been playing the Western leaders for fools as he commits to fighting ISIS and pretending he’s a changed man. He remains a jihad terrorist who will manipulate and betray his fellow Muslims and Westerners to attain greater power.
Currently, al-Sharaa is the puppet of strongman Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The latter has turned against ISIS in Syria, killing its leader Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini Al-Qurshi in 2023. It was Erdogan who provided military and logistical backing to al-Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and also referenced the new Syrian leadership his “brothers.”

In an audio message released late Saturday by the group’s spokesman, who identifies himself as Abu Huzaifa al-Ansari, he called on IS followers around the world to attack Jewish and Western targets as they have in past years.
