In the UK, Millions of the Employed Receive Less Than Do Those on Welfare

Imagine you are a Muslim living in one of those unpleasant Muslim countries, and you are eager to better your lot. You set your sights, as an economic migrant, on one of those fabled welfare states of western Europe, where a cornucopia of benefits awaits you. You somehow manage to make it through the various borders, both of land and sea, and arrive as an illegal alien in, let’s say, the UK. You tell a tale of woe to the authorities, in order to be granted asylum. You claim, let’s say, to be from Iraq, and that the state, which is dominated by Shi’a, persecutes you as a Sunni Muslim. Or you claim to be a Kurd, and subject to discrimination from Arab supremacists. Or you come from Syria, and claim that because Ahmed al-Sharaa is blaming all the Alawites for supposedly supporting Bashar al-Assad’s regime, you are in danger of being killed by the new Syrian National Army, which did, in fact, attack Alawites in Latakia in early 2025. Or you simply pretend to be a homosexual and thus, in a Muslim society, you are in danger not just of persecution, but often, of death. Those are just a handful of the claims that you can make to obtain that asylum status. Once the British have granted you that, now it’s time to arrange for your care and feeding as a Muslim refugee.

You discover that in the UK, as an asylum seeker you are entitled to free housing, some of it in country inns in pretty little villages that then are pretty no longer, and some of it in luxury hotels in Birmingham, in Manchester, in London. You are entitled to free medical care of the highest quality. And your children, if you have any, may need a great deal of such care, because the Muslim practice of cousins marrying cousins results in a high percentage of babies born with congenital illnesses that are hideously expensive to treat. You are entitled to family allowances, that increase with every child. You receive money for food, and “pocket money” for incidentals. After all, the kindly British government wants these refugees who have suffered so much — for they have told their stories of woe with great imagination and flair — to be happy while they are in their new country, which may be forever.

The result is that those economic migrants, overwhelmingly Muslim, receive more in their unemployed condition than do millions of indigenous British who work for a living. More than six million workers in Britain are earning less than those living off welfare benefits, a report from the Centre for Social Justice has found.

The think tank’s analysis found that an average welfare recipient benefiting from Universal Credit (UC) subsidies and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefits would be given £25,200 per year in taxpayer cash. The CSJ noted that this would be the equivalent to the a pre-tax salary of £30,100.

In comparison, the report pointed to recent job postings for roles paying less than welfare, such as a Leicester prison officer for £28,187, a Birmingham store cleaner for £26,312, and a Manchester nursing assistant for £24,465.

The Centre for Social Justice report found that there are currently 6.2 million full-time workers who currently earn less than the combined benefits package. This would equate to around in four workers.

According to the report, people on the combined benefits package would take home £4,800 more per year than an average full-time worker and £3,400 more than someone on the National Living Wage.

The CSJ said that there are currently more than four million people in Britain claiming out-of-work benefits with no requirement to work….

Four million people who do not work have claimed welfare benefits. Of that number, 3.4 million are foreign born, and of that number, a great many are Muslims, from the Middle East and Pakistan.

With that understanding — that welfare benefits provide a better living than menial jobs in the UK, the only jobs for which most Muslims, lacking education and vocational training, would qualify — of course they will choose welfare in the UK.

How can such an intolerable situation be rectified? The UK government could decide it will no longer grant asylum just on the basis of claims of persecution; there has to be clear and convincing evidence of such persecution. But more importantly, the government has to delay welfare benefits so that instead of granting them right away to those given asylum, those benefits will be provided only after the asylum recipients have been gainfully employed for five years in the country. If they cannot find work themselves, the government will be their employer of last resort, assigning them to menial jobs. That should make the UK much less attractive to those who were expecting to live off the largesse lavished upon asylum seekers in years past. Not any longer. The British taxpayers have had enough.
