The German film scene is a state-funded antisemitic abyss. Quite apart from the fact that it hasn’t produced anything of value for decades, it has degenerated into an ideologically tainted, cowardly conformist apparatus that allows itself to be dictated to by a hysterical, anti-Israel and partly openly antisemitic mob. The case of actress Sarah Maria Sander is just the latest, particularly disgusting proof of this.
Actress Sarah Maria Sander, who calls the barbaric Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023, by its name and refuses to sugarcoat or remain silent about the Islamic slaughter of Jews, posted a clear statement of support for Israel and against terrorism in the summer of 2025. As a result, she was immediately removed from a lead role in the major film production “The Death Wish of Maria Ohm” by the supposedly progressive, state-subsidized cultural functionaries. According to Sander, she had been contractually guaranteed a lead role. The actress, who also works as a journalist, explained to the Bild newspaper: “The film is largely based on my autobiographical material, I co-wrote the screenplay, and I was supposed to be a central part of the project in the role of Maria Ohm. This assurance was the basis of the agreement.”
The reason? Officially, of course, never “political,” but always some contrived artistic or interpersonal platitudes. In reality: pure ideological witch hunt. As Sander explains, her downfall was her response in August 2025 to an open letter from 200 filmmakers to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had demanded a halt to arms deliveries to Israel. In a YouTube video, Sander accused the artists of hypocrisy. In early December, her director, Silvana Santamaria, informed her in an email: “Dear Sarah, (…) several actors and agencies have clearly stated to us that they refuse to collaborate. This was justified, among other things, by public statements that have come to their attention (…) These responses and your limited availability in January have led to the decision that realizing the project with you as the lead actress is not possible in the current circumstances.”
This is not an exception; it’s systemic. For years, a climate of fear has prevailed in German theaters, film schools, funding bodies, and ensembles: Woe betide you if you deviate from the anti-Zionist narrative, woe betide you if you show even minimal solidarity with the only democratic state in the Middle East, woe betide you if you call Islamic terrorism by its name. Then you are “toxic,” “problematic,” “no longer acceptable.” Millions of taxpayer euros continue to flow into the same institutions, the same directors, the same “dramaturgs” who cover up or even actively participate in such purges.
The German cultural scene, for the most part, should have its funding cut off immediately. Completely. Right now. Until further notice. Not a single additional tax euro should go to institutions and projects where loyalty tests are conducted and people are weeded out because of their stance on democracy and human rights.
Had Sarah Maria Sander made a pro-Hamas declaration, signed an anti-Israel petition, or joined a protest march against Israel, chanting against the very existence of the Jewish state — “from the river to the sea/Palestine will be free” — or calling for “death, death to the IDF,” nothing would have happened to her. In fact, she would have then been, in the eyes of the left that dominates the German film industry, even more desirable an actress, acclaimed for her embrace of Hamas and her hatred for the “colonial-settler apartheid genocidal state of Israel.” That is how bad the antisemitic virus has spread in the country that not so long ago was responsible for the murder of six million Jews.

It might be wise for her, an apparently beautiful, talented and accomplished actress to look to appear in films/programs to be produced in Hungary, Poland or the Czech Republic, all of which have thriving film communities.
