The UN Secretary-General is shocked by reports of violence and excessive use of force by Iranian authorities against protesters across the country, urging restraint and the immediate restoration of communications as unrest enters its third week.
“All Iranians must be able to express their grievances peacefully and without fear,” António Guterres’ spokesperson said in a statement issued on Sunday.
“The rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in international law, must be fully respected and protected.”
The Secretary-General called on Iranian authorities to exercise maximum restraint and to refrain from unnecessary or disproportionate use of force.
He also called for steps to enable access to information, including restoring communications….
There’s nothing “shocking” about the extent of the Iranian Islamic regime’s barbarism to anyone who knows anything about the Islamic Republic. Its modus operandi is to crush dissent, no matter how violently. The regime has no concern for how many people it murders.
Guterres then uses his favorite cop-out word, as he does in every crisis — including after Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel on October 7 — “restraint.” In the same manner, Guterres calls for Trump to use “restraint”; this was in connection to Trump’s message on Truth Social:
Although the exact number of people that the Islamic Republic of Iran has murdered differs widely among circulating reports, according to Iran International, “at least 2,000 people have been killed across Iran,” and the number has been rising rapidly.
Guterres’ advise to Iran, after expressing his “shock”? You guessed it: He called also for Iran to exercise “restraint.”
Guterres also had brilliant advice for the US over Venezuela: He called for the US to use “restraint.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian “blamed the US and Israel for ordering ‘rioters’ to create instability in Iran… He called on Iranians to distance themselves from ‘rioters and terrorists,’ adding that his government was determined to resolve people’s economic problems.” To the Islamic Republic of Iran, every self-created problem is blamed on America and Israel — to which it often refers as the Great Satan and the Little Satan, respectively.
The protests have overwhelmed Pezeshkian. He recently declared that “the crisis may be rapidly moving beyond officials’ control,” adding: “We should not expect the government to handle all of this alone…The government simply does not have that capacity.”
As the world waits to see whether Trump will follow through on his Truth Social threat, the president is reportedly “unafraid” to use military options against Iran. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that airstrikes are among the “many, many options” that the president is considering, but that “diplomacy is always the first option for the president.” And now Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has said: “We are ready for war, but also for dialogue,”
In turn, Trump has recognized this willingness to negotiate.
The UN has continually shown itself to be utterly useless as a global affairs body charged with maintaining peace and security. Let’s hope Trump reevaluates America’s UN funding, as it is the organization’s largest donor. In 2025, America was responsible for 22 percent of the UN budget.

Right now, according to Iran International, the death toll in Iran has shot up to 12,000 as Khamenei had ordered live firing on protesters. The UN and other such pooh-bahs can just STFU, and Guterres can get on the next flight to Lisbon and lament away

The United States should adopt and strongly support such a resolution.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario that would necessitate boots on the ground. Even the destruction of Iran’s military would still require an invasion and occupation of some sort.. Iran is a country of approx 82 million souls, many of whom support the current regime. It could get very messy, very quickly.
I have difficulty seeing what the US could actually do here to help the protesters but, then again, I’m no military strategist.

If this UN chief is so powerful why doesn’t he send in UN security forces to protect the Iranian people? Oh I know the answer, he doesn’t want to be responsible for the mess or expense. He’d rather have America do the job so we can pickup the tab and if anything goes wrong he can blame America.
