While Iranian leaders utter their dire warnings to the United States, promising to answer any American attack in support of the protestors with a ferocity far beyond what they claim Iran displayed during the 12-Day War last June (Iran has rewritten history so that, in its version, that crushing defeat was a victory for the Islamic Republic), the behavior of the supreme leader suggests a different calculation. He has chosen to showcase his defiance and bravery by now hiding in one of the underground fortified bunkers the Iranians have built for just such occasions. In hiding below ground to avoid Israeli and American missiles, bombs, and drones, he is copying Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, who thought he would be safe in the terror group’s command center built underneath an apartment house in the Dahiyeh neighborhood of south Beirut; instead, an Israeli missile hit the apartment house, which collapsed onto the room where Nasrallah was staying, and he was crushed to death. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei moved to a fortified underground shelter containing a series of tunnels in Tehran after senior security and military officials warned of an increased likelihood of an American strike, Iran International reported on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Iranian opposition outlet, Masoud Khamenei, the ayatollah’s third son, has taken over management of the supreme leader’s day-to-day responsibilities and is serving as the primary channel for communication with the regime government’s executive branches.
The Iranian assessment that a US attack has become more likely comes after US President Donald Trump said on Friday that American ships were en-route to waters near the country.
The US “has a lot of ships heading towards Iran,” Trump said, adding that he “hopes we don’t have to use them.”…
While the true number of people killed in the unrest remains unknown, US-based Iranian rights group HRANA’s tally confirmed early on Saturday the deaths of 5,137 people.
American analysts, and Iranians outside Iran, have managed to compile figures that are much higher. Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran, has said that at least 20,000 protesters, and possibly many more, were killed. Others have suggested that as many as 45,00 protesters were killed. Doctors in Iran have in January 2026 provided as their highest estimated number of injured individuals a figure between 330,000 and 360,000, from gunshot, shrapnel, and pellet-related wounds.
These figures indicate that medical sources, including doctors and hospitals, recorded these injuries during a period of intense crackdowns.
Meanwhile, sitting in his underground bunker in Tehran, the supreme leader looks less supreme every day. He is waiting for something to happen, for he knows he cannot go on hiding like this indefinitely, and the protesters, having temporarily pulled back from the streets, are nursing their hate for the regime and for him. Meanwhile, the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier with 90 fixed-wing planes and helicopters, left the Indo-Pacific a week ago and is sailing ever closer to the Persian Gulf. Soon enough, the supreme leader may see the walls and ceiling of his bunker put to the test. And how long will the Islamic Republic last after he has gone?

Israel dropped from 60-80 JDAM equipped BLU-109 bunker busters (2000 lbs. each) from F-15I aircraft through the roof of the complex, penetrating to the basement, where they exploded and got Nasrallah and all the terrorists surrounding him. Back here in the US, and even the technical advisors to the IAF, were of the opinion that such a blitz was gross overkill and a waste of bombs, but Nasrallah was such a high valued target, that certainty was worth the price over a 99% probability of a kill unsung one or two bombs, perhaps one of the reasons to use multiple bombs was the possibility that the underground bunker was reinforced with meters of high-strength concrete. Each BLU-109 was guided to the entrance made by the previous bomb, so the last ones were then guaranteed to explode inside the bunker.
Nastrallah’s body was found the next day in the rubble, which was a dilemma for the Israelis. Was the date of celebration when they found the body, or was it the date when Nasrallah was actually killed?
Israel then went on to assassinate Nasrallah’s successor within a very short period of time. The second replacement is treading more lightly.

I think his killing is necessary to make it a point of no return for the regime. Even his exile might do.
