The Gaza Board of Peace: Qatar, Turkey, and the Betrayal of Israel

The American government did not consult with the government of Israel in a matter of supreme concern to the Jewish state: who will make up the Board of Peace that will oversee the new, technocratic government of Gaza and the rebuilding of the Strip. When they found out that representatives from both Qatar and Turkey have been named to serve on the BoP, the Israelis were horrified, beginning with the prime minister. Israel was not notified in advance about the presence of Qatari and Turkish officials among the Gaza Board of Peace (BoP) announced by US President Donald Trump, US officials told N12 on Saturday.

“We did not tell Netanyahu in advance about the composition of the executive committee. He did not expect there to be representatives from Turkey and Qatar, but Gaza is now our show, not his show,” the officials told N12.

“If he [Netanyahu] wants the Trump administration to deal with Gaza – we will do it our way,” they added.

In a separate statement, the technocratic administration expected to take over Gaza said that it “embrace[s] peace, through which we strive to secure the path to real Palestinian rights and self-determination.”

The revelation came as Israeli officials raised concerns over the makeup of the BoP, saying that it contradicts Israeli policy and was not brought up with Israeli authorities.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to take the matter up with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Prime Minister’s Office stated following the announcement.

The Israelis regard certain countries as unacceptable members of the BoP. The two most worrisome are Qatar and Turkey. Both are enemies of Israel. Qatar has long been the financial supporter of Hamas, and has provide a luxurious refuge for Hamas’ senior leaders. As for Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly denounced the Jewish state, accusing it of “genocide” in Gaza.. He has even suggested in the past the formation of a pan-Islamic military force to attack Israel, and it was clear that this Turkish egomaniac saw himself as leading such an effort.

Instead of a Qatari on the BoP, why didn’t the Trump administration choose someone from the United Arab Emirates, the Arab state that has been least malign in its attitude toward Israel? And instead of Turkey, why not put someone from Azerbaijan, or from one of the Turkic states of Central Asia, that do not share Erdogan’s hatred of Israel?

Opposition leader Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) called the announcement on the Gaza Board of Peace a “diplomatic failure for Israel.”

Lapid claimed that, for the last year, he has been warning the government that “if you don’t advance the Egyptian solution with the US and the world, you’ll end up with Turkey and Qatar in Gaza.”…

And that is exactly what happened: the BoP has members from both Turkey and Qatar.

What can Israel now do? Having been kept in the dark by Trump about the makeup of the BoP, and then double-crossed by him when he selected representatives from Qatar and Turkey to be on the BoP, knowing those were precisely the two countries that Israel most wanted kept out, it should simply declare, more in sorrow, that it cannot accept the Board as tentatively constituted. It should state, firmly, that Qatar is both the handmaid and host of Hamas, and that Turkey’s present leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is so hostile to Israel as to have promoted the idea of a pan-Islamic military force to attack Israel. How will Trump, who fancies himself the master of everything, be able to reply to that?

    I agree w/ Hugh: Israel should dismiss this proposal, and insist that Qatar and Turkey be removed. They could include Oman and Azerbaijan in their place

    • When I wrote the piece the other daythe UAE had not yet been named. Now I see that it has been, which is good. But you are right — Oman would also be a good choice, and so would Morocco.

      • Sorry, Hugh, I overlooked your mention of the Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan. Yeah, they would be good choices, as well as Morocco

      Aside from the Abraham Accord countries, they should also look for other muslim countries that are friendly w/ Israel. That’s why I suggested Azerbaijan above, which would be a good alternative to their ally Turkey. They could also toss in Kazakhstan, which also has normalized relations w/ Israel

      • Azerbaijan is trying to finish the Armenian genocide, though–not so good…

      • Graven, you are right, but Azerbaijan is an ally of Israel, so in this context, having them on is not a bad idea. The goal of this board is having a future where Israel can exist in peace, and Azerbaijan, being an ally of Israel, is more likely to do that than Turkey. I however don’t think that after the Iranian regime falls, that these 2 countries will still remain friends

        As for Armenia, as GE pointed out, they have an absolute wuss as their leader, who just rolled over and gave Trump everything he wanted, w/o demanding anything from Azerbaijan. Armenia has lost a lot of territory beyond Artsakh, as Azerbaijan and Turkey have established their corridor. I feel for Armenia, but other countries can’t be more pro-Armenians than the leaders of Armenia itself

        • I do take your points, Infidel. I can see dealing with the Azerbaijanis in this context–but any allying should proceed with caution.

    • Why is there a Board of “Peace”??

      Why shd anyone restore Gaza when it is just a terror enclave?
      Why is it more important that actual suffering people worldwide eg Congo?
      Why do those war criminals deserve all those mollycoddling when they still have so much energy to send out propaganda?
      This is disgusting and Israel should have taken over and levelled the place.

    The Palestinians don’t want Israel to exist; they want all of Israel.
    They consider the “right” of return – of all the “Palestinian refugees” to Israel, not “Palestine”, to be their inalienable right.
    This statement is a shot to Israel, and the Israeli government should reject it.
    Just moving to phase 2 when Hamas has not completed phase 1 – and insists they will not – should give Israel the right to insist on the terms of the agreement. Hamas disarms, or gets destroyed.
    This “Board of Peace” is like the UN ganging up on Israel.

    The currently chosen “Gaza Board of Peace” is totally unacceptable.

    • Hugh mentions above that Emirates is there. Dunno about Azerbaijan, but they would definitely be an improvement over Turkey. They could also toss in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan: the latter still has a Jewish population in Buqhara

  6. The composition of the board. Yes, agreed, those two should NOT be on there.

    The salient point here is that they ARE on there, and appointed by POTUS Trump. It has become clear to many that Trump is following in the footsteps of most every POTUS and the (not-so-deep) State, with the agenda that Israel will be wiped out.

    There is no other way to interpret the series of moves and steps that have been pushed, and are now in place, over the past few decades! Strategic land has been given over to the enemies of the Israeli people! What other nation would accept this?

    It is so bald-faced and brazen, I’m amazed so many just don’t see what’s happening. Trump is a player, like all the rest. Yes, I like some of the things being done versus the openly suicidal regime in before him. But he is still playing the same game. A lot of what he is doing is just part of the show, to keep supporters thinking “America First” and ignoring the bigger agenda–which smacks of the same old stuff.

    Transparency? There’s some. But only in certain areas.

    Very disappointing. And don’t say “he doesn’t realize”… Please don’t say that. He is very smart.

    Qatar and Turkey–their leaders among his “good friends.” Sheesh.

    The acid test of whether a leader is a good one or a bad one is their policy on Israel. It brings out the true nature of the man, or woman. The next test is their attitude towards Islam. Those two tests will tell you everything you need to know! And predict the trajectory of their policies. True, there is a bone tossed to Israel now and then…to prevent mutiny and muddy the waters.

    But what is the overall result? JW readers should know to recognize it, and not be fooled by personality. And I think most are not. But many have been hoping Trump would be a saving grace, and the truth is painful, so we can avoid seeing it, and hoping that sinking feeling in the gut will be wrong this time. Sorry. He is not the Messiah!

  7. Why don’t just say Trump betrays Israel?
    Seems like beside the existence of Trump Derangement Syndrome, there is also Trump Worshipment Syndrome, some people worship Trump the same way as muslims worship Muhammad, never see the fault or evil of Trump or Muhammad.

    Surely Israel does not feel like inviting on Muslim reinforcement, outside the yellow line demarcation. Nor does the God of Israel. That peace may reign.

    Turkey just installed a Sunni Jihad terrorist in Syria–al Sharaa–who is now massacring Christians, Alawites, and Druze there, and the terrorist Gaza Flotilla was launched from Turkey–and many Hamas leaders have been welcomed in by Qatar. Not exactly a “Board of Peace” for Israel…

      • Petra, I have my issues with President Trump and his frequent cluelessness on the threat to Islam, as I have so often noted. But contrary to your idea that most who want to oust Trump recognize these shortcomings, most of them instead consider him far too tough on Islam and far too allied with Israel.

        I would very much like to see Trump wise up on Islam, but ousting him is *not* the answer in this current environment. And while there is much that I like about JD Vance, and he is clearly–like Trump–anti-Jihad, as every American politician should be–I am also not certain that he is any savvier than is Trump on the creed of Islam itself.
