Okay, So Now Shakespeare Was (What Else?) a Black Woman

The woke tide may be receding in the popular culture, but far-left fantasists are still everywhere, endlessly devising new ways to sow confusion, resentment, and self-hatred among Americans and Westerners in general. And so now comes the news that the greatest writer in the English language, the touchstone of everything literature can and should be, the world’s premier dead white male of all dead white males, was not white or male at all. Or at least leftists want you to think he wasn’t.

According to a new book that is getting adulatory reviews from leftists, William Shakespeare was really a black woman, and really, what else could he possibly have been? The only drawback, as far as today’s leftists are concerned, is that the supposedly real Shakespeare, Emilia Bassano Willoughby, was Jewish, which for twenty-first century leftists means that she may have participated in the oppression of the Palestinians. They needn’t worry, however; there were no Palestinians in the sixteenth century, when Emilia Bassano Willoughby and William Shakespeare flourished, as the KGB didn’t create the Palestinian nationality until the 1960s.

The creator and popularizers of this claim actually have bigger problems to worry about anyway. For one thing, although it is being universally reported these days that this new you-go-girl Shakespeare was black, she really wasn’t, any more than Richard III or Anne Boleyn, both of whom contemporary TV series turned black, were anything but white English people.

For even though she wasn’t Shakespeare, Emilia Bassano Willoughby was a real person, and she wasn’t black. One X user explained: “I’ve seen the absolutely hilarious claim that William Shakespeare stole all of his writings from a black woman… My favourite bit about this ‘black woman’ is that Emilia Bossano Lanier is literally less black than I am. I’ve seen the paintings of her looking white… Her dad was Italian and her Mother was English. Yet people are claiming she’s BLACK. The weirdos who claim Emilia was black are making this claim on the SPECULATION that she has some potential Moroccan heritage somewhere in her father’s ancestry, though this speculation has not been backed up with any evidence.”

And so it’s clear that in this entire claim, we’re not dealing with anything close to a serious historical inquiry. Instead, all we’re getting is modern-day leftist fantasy and wish fulfillment.

The publicity material for this preposterous book claims that Coslet “conclusively demonstrates that Shakespeare was not a man, but a woman: a dark-skinned lady, of Jewish origin, born into a family of Court musicians from Venice, and the mother of the English-speaking world. Her name was Emilia Bassano.” Coslet bases this on a “re-examination of often-overlooked historical documents, shrewd, chilling, and profound, this volume offers extensive evidence that Emilia was the author of the canon.”

  1. Beyond asinine. Incidentally, I’ve never embraced the Black Santa either. For someone who (fictitiously) lives at the North Pole, he has to have a low melanin content. To which some might argue – why should Africans or other Black/Brown people be Christian? To which I’d say – indeed, they shouldn’t. If they’re not Atheists/Agnostics, they should simply follow the faiths of their regions (except islam) – be it Animist, or whatever native faiths they have (obviously sans things like human sacrifice)

    • I have no problems with Black or Brown people being Christian, And certainly many Europeans are lighter skinned than Jesus may have been (he was likely olive-skinned, although there is quite a range with Mizrahi Jews). I consider this a matter of conscience and faith, not race.

      And Infidel, Do you think that you yourself should not be allowed to be Christian–or were you just making a point?

  2. Another ridiculous demotion of the greatest English playwright. Along with Ben Johnson and Kit Marlowe (the “father of us all”) and several others, the Elizebethan explosion was revolutionary. The Dutch had Vondel, a contemporary of Shakespeare, claimed to be as brilliant, though I’ve never read any translations. A slightly better supposition is about “noble” authors, such as de Vere. Anthony Burgess’ brilliant novel, “Nothing Like the Sun” shows inspired speculation about Shakespeare’s beginnings. Edward Marston wrote an excellent seriesof novels about a playwright who might have been Shakespeare. and then there’s the “dark lady” of the Sonnets . . . .

    • I think the point that is often lost with claims that Shakespeare was actually noble is that while we greatly esteem Shakespeare today, that writing plays was seldom considered a noble pursuit at the time. Then, there was a broad explosion of education during this period, which made it far more likely that someone from a lower class could be revealed as a brilliant writer.

  5. It is hard to believe that anyone – even in this cultural atmosphere – could be so stupid as to try to put this one over. But (so far) we have the consolation of knowing that there is an establishment of Shakespeare scholarship that will be even less impressed by this childish nonsense than they are by claims that Shakespeare was really Christopher Marlowe or the Earl of Oxford. We haven’t completely collapsed yet, however much we may be on the road to it.

    • Given the state of public “education” these days, unfamiliarity with Shakespeare and his times could persuade the ignorant to accept anything said of him.

  6. Surely it has to be a joke, a satire about left wing lunacy. The publisher should have rejected the idiotic book and told the writer to seek psychiatric help because they are obviously insane.

  7. Another author by the name of Looney (sic) also pushed the de Vere theory. Part of his argument is from sheer snobbery:
    what could a peasant from the sticks know about Italy enough to write Two Gentlemen of Verona kind of thing?

    But yes he (it?) remains obscure.
    You sense that Chaucer, John Donne, John Milton, & co., were real people but William is just an alien ghost.

    And don’t let the Sonnets make you think he, or it, could pass the Turing Test. Aliens, psychopaths, and actors, are all good at crying and making you want to cry.

    • There’s actually an excellent argument that the Earl of Oxford (deVere) was the actual author of Shakespeare’s works. An excellent case can be made. Many well known people including Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles, etc. believed that to be so.
      It doesn’t change much but it’s interesting. In any event deVere was not a black woman.

    The mountain of culture which came from Africa is one of the great wonders of human civilisation and development.

    The sad thing is that they did not get the credit for it until the recent enlightenment.

  9. It seems that all worthwhile things done by White males who were non-muzzie were never done by them at all as everything useful and worthwhile was done by Black women or muzzies.

    Personally, I don’t care one bit for Shakespeare’s writings. I’ve read them and they don’t appeal to me. I like Dickens.

    But Truth is Truth. If a White, non-muzzie male wrote the plays and stuff, then a White male wrote them, and not some woman, White, Black or other color.
    It seems today that the more outrageous a lie is, the more it is touted and applauded as the real thing..

  10. The morons on the left are admitting that there is such a huge shortage of stories that are worth telling regarding blacks that they have to go back in time and race swap. If I was black I would be insulted by what the mostly white left is doing. I am white and I am insulted by what the mostly white left is doing to blacks. I want to see a show made where Martin Luther King is portrayed by a red headed oriental guy. The Zulu Kings could be portrayed as just white guys in blackface.
