Left-leaning Clinton-appointed judge presides in case of pro-Iran, anti-Zionist, Hizballah-harboring Maduro

The 92-year-old Judge Alvin Hellerstein is a left-leaning Clinton-appointed judge who has ruled against Trump in the past. And in September 2025, Judge Hellerstein blocked the Trump administration’s use of emergency powers to deport foreign students and activists who participated in Palestinian resistance protests against the Gaza war.

Expect more strong reaction to Hellerstein’s past cases, as well as to his Jewish identity, in this high profile case.

Aside from the noise, let’s hope that Maduro gets his comeuppance for the sake of justice and human rights. The people of Venezuela have been celebrating his capture, and that speaks volumes. Maduro is also a grave threat to American interests. Consider:

Following Nicolas Maduro’s arrest on Saturday, Judge Alvin Hellerstein, a 92-year-old Orthodox Jewish federal judge, was appointed to preside over the criminal proceedings against the former Venezuelan president.

The trial will take place at the Southern District of New York courthouse in Manhattan, widely regarded as one of the most powerful and influential courts in the United States, which routinely handles cases involving national security, terrorism, and large-scale international crime.

Hellerstein is among the longest-serving active federal judges in the country. Appointed to the bench in 1998 by President Bill Clinton, he assumed senior judge status in 2011 but has continued to hear cases well into his tenth decade.

Over his career, the judge has handled terrorism and national security cases, complex financial disputes, and major civil lawsuits, including claims linked to the 9/11 attacks.

According to the indictment, Maduro is charged with grave federal offenses, including drug trafficking, government corruption, and crimes linked to terrorism.

I won’t comment on the judge (although I think that just like there is a minimum age that a person has to be in order to serve, there needs to be a maximum as well – maybe 85?), since Billy Jeff had a mixed record on judicial appointments. My criticism of the administration remains on them choosing New York to try the case, instead of Florida, and if they get a pro-Maduro jury, they’d have only themselves to blame

    However, on Candace Owens charges of Zionists being behind Maduro’s ouster, is she aware that Maduro announced that he is a real Jew? Granted, he was claiming that Bibi is not one, but since she hates Jewish people, whether by race or by faith, why does she consider Maduro worth supporting?

    • I agree. I’m confused about Trump demanding a new election. Maduro should be found guilty of stealing the election and the presidency would go to Edmundo Gonzales, who won.

Questions are the Chinese he was meeting with when he won the free trip to America still waiting in the green room for him to come back? Is Raoul Castro the ruler of Cuba up graded his personal guards and his safe rooms ?Is the President of Mexico on the phone to Trump promising to put a lid on illegal drug production and smuggling across the US borders? Is China rethinking it’s silk road policy and ,playing nicer with the rest of the world? Gun boat foreign policies do get the world leaders a chance to reorder their goals and priorities .

        • His government has not yet been overthrown: his VP is the one who’s now acting president, who imagines that Maduro can return and resume power. So if Maduro is returned, he won’t face a firing squad: he’ll be re-instated. Their only choice is new elections, but they won’t do it since they stole the election last year

          Also, Raul Castro stepped down from power in 2021: he’s now 94. But I doubt there’s anyone left in Cuba to even try a revolt, the way there is in Venezuela

          As for China, they right now have an economic crisis, which is why they are no longer aggressively pursuing belt & road. There seems to be a power struggle b/w Xi and his critics, and he seems to have lost control over the PLA

        • Already Madero Vice President Rodriquez is phoning Trump saying she will play ball and let Americas oil companies in .Stop trade with Cuba ,do you think she wants to give up power. Do you think she wants to spend time worrying about some CIA spook having arrange an accident for her .Do you think she might have been in on this from the start. Or if she did gives power back to Madero she might be kill off by him??She is our new “strong woman” who can keep her wealth ,power, she is embedded with the arm services there she can work with us or face an uncertain future.         • Also it was reported that the Cubans provide the guards for Maduro that night according to our government .The Chinese where buying alot of oil from the Maduro reign that is over now, With tariffs on the table between China and the United States ,and the lack of oil for Chinese manufacturing and alot of ghost cities built in China that are empty are some of their current problems. The oil sales in Venezuela also was reported to prop up Cuba, that is over .What makes you think Vice President Rodriquez is so suicidally loyal to Maduro and her “party” of thieves?

        • Yeah, I saw one report where Maduro’s son lashed out at members of his father’s regime for not protecting his parents from being captured. The cohesion of the Left in Caracas is just coming apart, and it’s funny to watch

    • Actually, Orthodox Jews are the least Leftist among the Jewish population. That is the one part of that population that the GOP can look to for support. Well, that, and Russian Jews who are US citizens

  7. Unfortunately the Constitution states that Article III judges are appointed for life. They almost always stay in office until they die. Even in the throes of death, they stay on the bench to get that last paycheck. In contrast, the New York State constitution requires judges to retire at age 70. That was probably a good age when written, but modern medicine has made 80 the new 70. Believe it or not, sitting on your duff all day is not an old person’s activity. At age 80 or so, medical problems would definitely interfere with their job function. Obviously, some develop this inability at an earlier age, and some at a later age, but nonetheless an age cut-off for judges Would be a good thing.

    • Yeah, that needs to change. I’ve seen some people (including President Trump) argue that there are a lot of people who are pretty sharp in their 90s. That may well be, just like on the other end of the age scale, there are teenagers who are pretty astute, sometimes more astute than people whose only qualification is that they are above 35.

      But just as we wouldn’t change the minimum age for elected officials (particularly for Senate or POTUS) to accommodate them, we shouldn’t have no upper limit just b’cos some very elderly people are exceptionally sharp. That is the exception, not the rule, and the law shouldn’t be based on exceptions. Otherwise, have no limits either end

      Just like we wouldn’t allow an infant to represent any state in the senate, Diane Feinstein should have been removed from there before her death, when her daughter had to make her life decisions. Just b’cos more support to the GOP comes from Boomers and Gen-Xers doesn’t mean that we ought to maintain the gerontocracy. Regardless of where the electoral advantage might lie, problem w/ it is that it empowers people w/ decreasing mental faculties as a statistical rule, no matter how brilliant individual outliers might be
