Iran is imploding. Its anti-regime protests have now spread to a majority of the nation’s provinces. According to Iran International: “The deadliest crackdown took place in the city of Malekshahi in Ilam province, western Iran, on Saturday where security forces opened fire on protesters, killing at least five and injuring 30 others.” But that number is climbing. “Security forces clash with protesters in Iran’s main bazaar as 36 killed in rallies,” by Gavin Blackburn, Euronews, January 6, 2026:
Protesters angry over Iran’s worsening economy conducted a sit-in protest at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on Tuesday, with activists saying at least 36 people have been killed in widening protests that began in December.
The protest at the Grand Bazaar, which was largely shuttered on Tuesday, was the latest sign that demonstrations are likely to continue as the country’s currency the rial fell to a record low against the dollar in persistent hyperinflation plaguing Iran.
The rial collapsed in December, reaching 1.4 million to one US dollar, sparking protests soon after. On Tuesday, the exchange rate collapsed further to 1.46 million rials with no signs of slowing.
Before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the rial was broadly stable, trading at around 70 to $1. At the time of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, $1 traded for 32,000 rials.
Meanwhile, the situation was likely to worsen as Iran’s Central Bank drastically reduced the subsidised exchange rates it offers to importers and producers.
That will likely see merchants pass on price hikes in the coming days to consumers, whose life savings have already dwindled over years of international sanctions targeting the country….
Although Euronews states that the deaths were due to a “clash with protesters,” the truth is that the Islamic regime’s thugs opened fire on protesters.
Now the Iranian government is saying that it ordered an investigation “into unrest in the western province of Ilam after rights groups condemned reports that security forces raided a hospital where injured protesters were being treated.”
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian signaled “that the crisis may be rapidly moving beyond officials’ control,” adding: “We should not expect the government to handle all of this alone… The government simply does not have that capacity.”
It isn’t clear whom Pezeshkian might have in mind about be able to aid Iran, in what looks to be a desperate plea for help. But what country is willing to go to war for Iran? China won’t intervene, given its policy of non-interventionism, as it focuses on its economic interests, while Russia is tied up with Ukraine, and at most, may be able to provide refuge for Iran’s supreme leader (and perhaps a few others). The Iranian regime may finally be on the brink.
Iran also faces a threat from Trump if it continues to murder protesters:
Back in 2022, during the revolution over the regime’s murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for wearing her hijab wrong, much talk circulated about the regime’s fall. The regime was so destabilized, in fact, that it was even eyeing Venezuela as a sanctuary for its fallen leaders. The regime is now isolated and cornered.

Another report that came out is that Iran is using Iraqi militias to crack down on the protesters. In the past, it used to be Hizbullah, but they’ve been completely decimated by Israel and cut off from Iran due to the fall of Syria. So now the islamic regime only has Iraq to fall back on
So far, around 800 Iraqi Shiite militiamen have been deployed, almost all of them members of Kataib Hezbollah, Harakat al-Nujaba, Sayyid al-Shuhada and the Badr Organization…. The transfer of these fighters is said to be taking place through the Shalamcheh, Chazabeh and Khosravi border crossings, under the cover of “pilgrimage trips to the holy shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad.”

While the US and Israel may not directly intervene in Iran since it’s b/w the islamic regime and Iranians, they could – and should – block any foreign militias pouring into Iraq. If there are residual US troops in Iraq, seal off those points, and in the meantime, we should tell Baghdad that any Iraqi militias trying to go into Iran would be attacked. We may not support the demonstrators directly trying to topple the regime, but otoh, we won’t allow jihadist fighters from outside Iran to go in and try propping up the regime
In the meantime, there have been reports of islamic buildings being destroyed by Iranian demonstrators. To the extent that any of it is true, good for them. Also, given the above report about Iraqi militias, the next Iranian government should just shut down pilgrimages to Twelver sites, such as the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhed
Also, talking about the economic situation there, Iran’s rial now has a value even lower than currencies like Uzbekistan or Zimbabwe. I’m not sure that the regime figures who are thinking about fleeing to Moscow or anywhere else – where they’d get their money from, unless it’s already stashed abroad in Swiss banks. Incidentally, the Swiss should release those funds to the next Iranian government, since that’s stolen money
Speaking of which, the unrest has now spread even to cities that have such shrines and are the strongholds of the ayatollahs, such as Qom and Mashhed. I also can’t wait for Tehran to completely fall. I also hope that Khamenei and anyone else are unable to flee anywhere, be it Moscow, Najaf or anywhere else

I guess the people of Iran got tired of being hanged in groups by the jihadists at the nearest lamppost or crane.
The Islamists and their leftwing allies, that took over in 1979, will be fleeing back to their jihadist safe haven France (or is it the UK today). Let’s see if they can get rid of Islam itself as they aren’t Arabs.
Hopefully, the Iranian people can enjoy their wealth again. Iran used to be the Switzerland of the Middle East before the jihadist Khomeini took over.

Reminds me of a joke I heard decades ago
A muslim who had just somehow passed the test to become the head cleric of his local mosque was there on his first day of work. Since he had no idea of how to begin, he asked his congregation, “Do you know what we’re going to talk about today?” The congregants there said no, and then he said, “How will I talk to you if you don’t know what it is I’m supposed to talk about?” And then he dismissed the session

Any Pakistanis, or Indian shi’a who are in Iran are already there: there isn’t an 11th hour border crossing to join the IRGC. The difference w/ Iraq is that there are fighters who on the pretext of visiting Mashhad, enter Iran via the border posts in Shalamcheh, Chazabeh and Khosravi, when the IRGC looks like on the brink of collapse. But I agree w/ you: once this regime falls, the new regime should deport all those foreign shi’a who are in Iran just to become ayatollahs or supporting shi’a militancy abroad

Therefore, the Iranians people are more than justified in wanting that brutal cruel oppressive Islamic tyranny to be overthrown and replaced with a genuine government.
As a former Muslim revealed an important reality when he wrote, “The Islamic republic of Iran exists and operates as what every fundamentalist dreams of, an Islamic state ruled by Sharia …” He further exposes that “What followed its establishment was the inevitable consequence and inexorable logic of its Islamic premise; state terrorism, a merciless tyranny.” [1]
