Between 50,000 and 70,000 articles were published worldwide on the war in Gaza in the first nine months of that war. Compare that to the 1,000 articles published about the first nine months of the American campaign in Mosul to defeat the Islamic State (ISIS). Look also at how the New York Times published 6,656 articles about the Gaza War in its first nine months. Compare that figure to the 80 articles the Times published over nine months about the American-led battle to free Mosul from ISIS over nine months in 2016-2017, its 198 articles about the Tigray War in Ethiopia, which killed 600,000 in a year, and the 5,434 articles it published during the first 13 years of Syria’s civil war.
The world media has been giving its obsessive attention to Israel in Gaza, its supposed “crimes against humanity,” and the exaggerated and stage-managed suffering of the Gazan civilians. Why has there been such a tremendous imbalance in this coverage? Why is it that Israel has become the cynosure of all malevolent journalistic eyes? Is it that “Jews are news,” but not in a good way? We can only conclude that the world’s antisemites, both of the right-wing and left-wing varieties, Christians and Muslims, have managed to spread their venom through the deployment of vast numbers of apologists, while the harassed Israelis are busy fighting a seven-front war, and have not devoted enough attention to making their case publicly, spending far too little on hasbara, and having only a handful of articulate spokesmen who at this point are fighting a campaign financed with billions of dollars from Qatar, that supports the Al Jazeera network, which has become the second-largest media empire in the world, after the BBC. In addition, Arab money from rich Gulf states, including Qatar, has also been used to make payments to freelance journalists outside Al Jazeera to promote Hamas and attack Israel. Israelis are now beginning to understand that they are losing the propaganda war, and need to devote more human resources to this. Israel’s spokesmen should have a perfect command of English, be adept at debate (like the prime minister), with a complete grasp of the history of the conflict, including its basis in Islamic theology.

When arguments about international coverage of Israel arise, they almost always begin in miniature. They circle around language. Is it a “settlement” or a “neighborhood”? A “security fence” or an “apartheid wall”? Was 1948 a war of independence or a Nakba? These debates have the feel of forensic disputes, as if the great drama of the Middle East might finally be settled by the correct choice of noun.They are not unimportant. Words matter. But they are also a distraction. They keep us arguing on the surface of the story, while the deeper, more corrupting structures shaping it remain largely untouched, and thus unseen.There are two such structures, two distortions so large that they become strangely invisible. Together, they help explain why Israel occupies such an outsized and morally charged place in the media’s imagination, particularly in the West.The first is the sheer scale of attention. Israel is covered by more full-time staff than all of sub-Saharan Africa combined, which is made up of dozens of countries, encompassing hundreds of millions of people, multiple wars, famines, mass displacement, and – in some cases – genocidal violence.
The world’s media ought to be put on notice that its obsession with Israel is not neutral, but malevolent.
