Does It Matter Which Book an Official Is Sworn In On?

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said it succinctly on Wednesday, commenting on the news that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani intended to be sworn in on the Qur’an: “The enemy is inside the gates.”

Newsmax reported Thursday that in saying this, Tuberville had “ignited a fresh political firestorm.” It was just over two weeks ago that he ignited the last one, writing that “Islam is not a religion. It’s a cult. Islamists aren’t here to assimilate. They’re here to conquer. Stop worrying about offending the pearl clutchers. We’ve got to SEND THEM HOME NOW or we’ll become the United Caliphate of America.”

According to Newsmax, Mamdani’s use of the Qur’an for his three (yes, three) oath-takings was indicative of the ever-widening divide in American politics. Mamdani’s “supporters said the moment reflects the city’s diversity and a ‘turning point’ for Muslim representation in civic life,” while his critics “argued the symbolism underscores how radically New York politics has shifted away from America’s Judeo-Christian roots.”

Many, if not most, Americans today would likely side with Mamdani and his supporters on this one. Many don’t see any problem with it in light of the fact that the custom of having elected officials be sworn in on the Bible is just a custom, not a matter of law. So why shouldn’t people who aren’t Jews or Christians be able to be sworn in on the holy book of their choice? Opposition to this idea is routinely dismissed as bigotry: aging white Christian Americans desperately trying to maintain their cultural and political hegemony, futilely fight against the inexorable, relentless march of history.

After all, if Islam is a religion of peace, as all elected officials everywhere in the U.S. still take for granted, what could possibly be wrong with having Muslim elected officials be sworn in the Qur’an? Since virtually all Muslim elected officials at all levels are Democrats, many believe it’s solely a partisan controversy. Barack Obama even lamented in March 2016 that “the Republican base had been fed this notion that Islam is inherently violent.” If Islam is not inherently violent, it must be pure chauvinism that leads people to object to the Qur’an being used to swear in elected officials. Some see the use of the Qur’an in swearing-in ceremonies as a necessary antidote to the “Islamophobia” that allegedly swept the nation in the wake of 9/11.

At a cursory glance, swearing in on the Qur’an doesn’t seem to present any problems. One primary reason, however, why many people object to American officials being sworn in on the Qur’an is because the Islamic holy book teaches values that are vastly different from American and Judeo-Christian values, particularly the necessity for Muslims to wage war against non-Muslims and subjugate them under the hegemony of Islamic law.

  4. Swearing into a political office using the Koran has one meaning only & Americans for the most part are very ignorant about it.

    The purpose of swearing in on the Koran is to show that Muslims have seized another part of American sovereignty. It means sharia law will be instilled in ways that most Americans will not see it coming. The population growth of Muslims in New York will grow to a majority, which will be even greater than when he was elected.

    New Yorkers simply did not listen to his message much like Obama when he made speeches. Now they will face what they sowed. the battle for America to remain and retain its sovereignty over Islam and China is going be a hard fought battle and people had better start reacting and learning about what is really happening inside our nation.

        Read the 1952 bill titled “Immigration and Nationality Act, became public law 414, in a nut shell “Any organization and or group aka Islam that advocates for America’s destruction or overthrow are prohibited to be in America.

        President Obama knew this and disregarded this law, the Somali’s, other Muslim groups expanded under his terms.

    • I somewhat agree w/ this. What if a religion doesn’t have a holy book, or if people of one sect of that religion don’t have one, but don’t follow the holy book of another sect? It should be on the constitution

      Only problem: if a politician does not believe in the constitution, which is the bulk of the DSA crowd, taking an oath on it is meaningless

    • John Adams nailed it : ‘Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.’ Unfortunately, I don’t believe there has ever been a government that has been able to meet -and keep – that requirement.

  7. I suspect that in the actual swearing in the individual being sworn in swears to support and enforce US laws and the US Constitution. He (or she) is not swearing to abide by the contents of whatever book is being used. It only matters that that the book is meaningful enough to the individual that he (or she) will take the oath seriously and abide by it.
    I suspect that Old Testament (and not the Christian Bible) is used to swear in Jewish people.
    It’s not important what they’re swearing on so much as what they’re swearing to.

    • Jewish people have the “Kol Nidre”, the Aramaic declaration that begins the Yom Kippur evening service and means “All Vows.” It is an annulment of the prior year’s vows that were, according to Encyclopaedia Judaica, “made unwittingly, rashly, or unknowingly,” allowing the Jewish people to formally free themselves of prior obligations, so they may start the year fresh.

  8. Everyone would know or expect that a Muslim is going use the Koran for swearing. The people in New York voted this Muslim shithead in. My ideal would be to have no Muslims in all our western countries like Hungary. If they are banned from a country they can’t be voted in by idiots. But I’m sure all Muslims will swear on the evil Koran.

  9. That new mayor of New York City had wanted to, and had been sworn into office by placing his hand on the Quran and the Bible. This might be viewed as the possible coming of the growing power and influence in NYC.

    This mat also serve as a reminder a better understanding of the Qur ‘an person need to look back in time before the coming of Muhammad and then the Qu ran . Back to the First Century AD which was the time of early Christian church. For the Early Christian Church had and now in modern times the Christian church still has the Gospel of Christ, First Corinthians 15:1-4.

    Much later, in time, came Muhammad and he gave much information, that many believe to be divine, some of which is said to have been obtained from an angle from heaven. This information was written down on different objects and things Those written words in different objects was then compiled together and then eventually went into the composition of what is now called the Qur ‘an .

    The Qur ‘an is actually, that is in reality, another gospel, apart and greatly different from the Gospel of the Christian Church. Such a thing was predicted in the Bible. For the Bible does warn about those who will come and offer to people another gospel other than the one shown above, First Corinthians 15:1-4. For it is warned about any other “gospel” in the Bible. For it is written in the Bible “But though we or an angle from heaven preach any other gospel onto you than which we have preached onto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if man preach any other gospel onto you than ye have received, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8, 9. [ K.J.V.]

    That specific angle that Muhammad met with in that cave was fallen angle, a demon ,the masquerading as the unfallen good angle of God.

    Therefore, the Qur’ an is the result of the deception of a false prophet, Mathew 7:15., who may have come in contact with a fallen angle, a demon, So the imams and mullahs who preach it a truth to other are accused of and by God.

  10. At one time, pols were required….in many U.S. States….to take their oaths while holding the Bible.
    At one time, people “swearing to tell the Truth” in Courts of Law, put their hands on a Bible while swearing.

    Along came atheists like the mad murray o’hare and whined and demanded until even in Court, one is not made “to **swear** to tell the Truth.” One just says they will do so.

    But this nation and the Constitution of this nation, were founded on principles found in the Bible.

    No matter how many copies of the book of demon filth a person may have and read, and swear upon, it is not possible to find those same principles in that muzzie book. that book is a book of lies and threats to rape and murder those who disagree.

    And the fact that this muzzie goon may have sworn anything resembling what others have sworn, means nothing. Because like that muzzie terrorist swearing an oath to the U.S. upon entry, admitted, ”i sweared, but I didn’t mean it”

    Do you care about what value system the politician believes in?

    Do you care about the decisions the politician will make?

    Do you care about what the politician bases his/her beliefs on?

    If you said ‘yes,’ then it matters.

    If you said ‘no,’ you’d best start over again.

    I think it does, yes. Jews and Christians know that the Bible–the Torah and Gospels–teach good moral values and truthfulness. Even many Agnostics and Atheists are affected by this.

    The Qur’an not only does not teach the importance of truthfulness, it specifically notes that Muslims can lie to Infidels to spread the creed. And the rest of the morals in that book are even worse–teaching rape, slavery, conquest, and mass murder of unbelievers,

    Yes, this makes a difference.

I hate the use of the Koran because it and Islam have taught and practiced for 1400 years that lying to obtain advantage is not merely permitted but encouraged. Any oath taken on the Koran is meaningless, as is any promise made by a Muslim especially when made to Infidels.

    The OTHER side of this story is that the US Supreme Court ruled about 50 years ago in the case arising from the Georgia legislature, Bond v. Floyd, that the sincerity of the oath taken upon installation of public office CANNOT BE CHALLENDGED. The only remedy is to allow the office holder to break the law, prosecute, convict and remove from office.

  15. This is not 1776. In this modern diverse USA everyone should swear an oath to the Constitution of the United States of America and nothing else.

        I recited it, you recited it, there was no hand on the Bible involved. And yes, I am a Bible believing Christian. In my lifetime I have seen too many holding up the Bible and proclaiming they are righteous while all the while they were in fact evil.

  18. Has anybody ever been sworn in on an actual Koran, which can exist only in Arabic? Tom Veal of the Stromata blog pointed this out back when Keith Ellison was sworn into Congress on Thomas Jefferson’s copy of George Sale’s translation.

    But that contains no Arabic. Thus, it does not qualify as a Koran. However, Sale’s introduction calls the work “so manifest a forgery”.

    • Your reading of the case may be different from mine. About 50 years ago Julian Bond was elected to the Georgia legislature. Because of his campaign statements, the sincerity of his oath was challenged. In a case available for free online, Bond v. Floyd, the US Supreme Court wrote at length about oaths of office and their challenges. My reading is that the oath can be taken on any book, including for example a telephone book and the sincerity of the taker cannot be questioned.

    • Most Muslims do not read the Qur’an in the original classical Arabic, nor do most Infidels know that some Muslims claim that a Qur’an not in the original Arabic is a fake. Ellison swearing in on Jefferson’s Qur’an–which a lot of silly Infidels assumed he revered–was very symbolic. I don’t think that most Muslims care beyond this.
