The Wikipedia entry on “Israel” now states as fact what is fiction: it claims that Israel has been committing “genocide” in Gaza. Wikipedia’s page on Israel now unequivocally states that the country is committing genocide, despite the fact that there is no formal legal consensus among nations or international courts that this is the case.
This was first reported by JNS, but was independently assessed by The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.
The edit was made on December 11 and has not been reversed despite extensive discussion between editors. The section appears at the end of the third paragraph in the top section of the page.
Before the change, the section read, “Israel’s practices in its occupation of the Palestinian territories have drawn sustained international [criticism], along with accusations from human rights organizations and UN officials that it has committed crimes against humanity, and genocide against the Palestinians during the Gaza war.”
The wording acknowledged that accusations of genocide have been leveled, but did not present it as fact.
As of December 11, the section now reads, “Whether to state that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians has drawn sustained international criticism. Experts, human rights organizations, and UN officials have described Israel’s actions as war crimes and crimes against humanity. Following the October 7 attacks in 2023, Israel began committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.” This links to the page on “Gaza genocide.”
This “Gaza genocide” page has also raised concerns. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said it fails to meet the website’s standards and is an example of how neutrality needs to be improved. “This article fails to meet our high standards and needs immediate attention,” Wales said in November.
Does Jimmy Wales have any control over Wikipedia’s content? If he is alarmed by the “Gaza genocide” entry, shouldn’t he call for the article to be expanded so that the evidence presented by those who defend Israel from the genocide charge can be included?
The Wikipedia entries on “genocide in Gaza” must be expanded. They must provide evidence that there has never been an IDF “intent” to commit genocide. The tremendous effort by the IDF to warn Gazan civilians away from sites about to be targeted should be discussed in detail; so should the Israeli government’s helping to transfer children needing specialized treatment from Gaza to hospitals in Jordan. Finally, of the approximately 70,000 people who have died in Gaza since the war began, the IDF believes that 28,000 were Hamas operatives, while of the remaining 42,000, 800 a month, during 26 months of war, died from diseases (cancer, heart disease, and so on) and accidents; in other words, 20,800 people in Gaza died from causes that had nothing to do with the war. That leaves a total of 21,200 civilians in Gaza who died as a result of the war. And that number is 1% of the total Gazan population of 2.2 million. Does the killing of 1% of an enemy’s civilian population constitute genocide? (If it did, then both the U.S. and the U.K. would be guilty of genocide in World War II). All of this information should be included in the Wikipedia entry on “Gaza genocide.”
And if enough people, especially in Congress and the media, begin to hold Wikipedia’s coverage of Israel up to strict scrutiny — including at well-publicized Congressional hearings on how Wikipedia entries have maligned Israel, and especially how that “Gaza genocide” charge was presented as fact, perhaps those 30 malign editors will be blocked from contributing further content, and Wikipedia’s coverage of the Gaza war will be cleansed of its sickening bias.

Anyone using Wikipedia has to realize the bias is left-wing and pro-islam.
That being said, on nonpolitical stuff it can be quite useful and accurate (specs on a ’65 Mustang, results of the 1986 Masters Golf Tournament, etc.)

I am in full agreement with you, James. In so many areas, Wikipedia is a wonderful encyclopedia and I occasionally send them a small donation in thanks for that. But, always, the reader of Wikipedia must assume they are far to the left politically and pay little attention to their sly mischaracterizations of patriots.

Type “Jerusalem” in the search box of Wikipedia. The first suggested entry one will see will have the description “City in the Southern Levant”. One won’t see Athens described as “City in the Southern Balkans” or Washington described as “City in Mid Atlantic” or Moscow described as “City in Eastern Europe”. Any fool can write a bunch of nonsense in that encyclopedia that never actually happened. Drugs, which are illegal in some places but legal in others, could also be the cause. Genocides exist and will continue to exist as long as there are religions and people who are willing to kill other people in the name of God.

As regards genocide.. I was just reading something about Cambodia. Between 1975 and 1979 – in just four years – the Pol Pot regime mass-murdered one-quarter of the country’s total population. THAT is what genocide looks like. Strictly speaking, it was ideologically based rather than ethnically: Pol Pot – ethnically Cambodian – mass-murdered their own countrymen, women and children, on ideological grounds.
Compared to the death toll inflicted in Cambodia, the death toll in Gaza – in three years of war carried out in a densely-inhabited urban landscape, by a technologically superior country, Israel, in response to the mass-murderous invasion of Israel by the jihad gang bosses of Gaza (an invasion that only killed as ‘few’ as it did, because it was vigorously resisted and ultimately repelled; there is absolutely no doubt that the jihadis of Gaza, if they had had the capacity to torture-rape-murder every Jew and indeed every non-Muslim in Israel, would have done so without hesitation) is.. minuscule. And one may note that of that much-quoted figure of 70,000 Gazans killed in three years of war, more than half of those killed were killed in battle: they were combatants. That is not genocide. That is war. As for the civilians: remarkably FEW civilians were killed in Gaza, relative to the number of combatants.. and a lot fewer civilians would have been killed, if the Jihadis of Gaza had not been deliberately putting their own women and kids and their own noncombatant population in general, directly in harm’s way, using them as ‘human shields’.

There are some editors who are a bit more neutral. I occasionally do a small modification on a Wikipedia page, usually in line with my own areas of interest, and most of what I have done (for example, pointing out that the name “Anissa” is Lebanese Christian, as opposed to the Arab origin to which it had been attributed) is allowed to stand. I did once add a comment on an article on the Treaty of Hudaibiyah, to the effect that there is more than one view on whether the Jews of the Bani Quraysha really did commit the treachery of which Muhammad accused them, and it was removed within two hours – but when I went back to the article a few weeks later, the whole thing had been rewritten much more neutrally. I guess that if there are people on the site at a given time who are either fanatical, or ill-informed, anything like an article on Gaza will hold all of the attraction that a battlefield has for carrion crows.
