In the U.S., drivers have been given speeding tickets for going over 35 inside city limits, even when the limit is not posted. Caught, the driver says, “I didn’t know because there were no signs.” And the officer, writing the ticket says, “It’s the law even if it isn’t posted.” The driver is supposed to **know** that and obey.
Fifty years ago, had some male gotten down on the floor to look up skirts and then told the judge he didn’t know because he didn’t see a sign saying so, he’d still go to jail.
