This is one of those small stories about antisemitism raising its ugly head that nonetheless happen so frequently that an example or two is worth recounting from time to time. The victim was one Miriam Mattova, a dual citizen, of Canada and Slovakia, and a model (she happens to be beautiful, but that is neither here nor there). She was riding in an Uber in Toronto, and talking on her phone, mentioning something that had happened to her on a recent trip to Israel. The Uber driver, a Muslim woman, stopped the car in the frigid Canadian air, and told her ride to “get out. Canadian-Slovakian Jewish model Miriam Mattova was kicked out of an Uber in Toronto when the driver realized she was a Jew. Mattov’s lawyer, Howard Levitt, told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.
The incident occurred on November 30, when Mattova got into an Uber on Dundas Street (booked by her friend) to travel to her home. Once in the car, Mattova facetimed another friend and casually recounted details of her recent trip to Israel.
In the middle of the intersection, the driver, a Muslim woman, suddenly hit the brakes and told Mattova to get out of the car. She asked her what was happening, and the driver responded that she did not feel comfortable with Mattova in the car.
“I asked why, because I still didn’t understand the situation, and then the driver responded by saying they do not drive Jewish people,” Mattova told the Post.
“At that moment, I chose to step out of the car, not out of fear but out of clarity. When someone reveals open discrimination, there is no reason to remain in that space.”
Mattova called another Uber, returned home, and the next day filed a detailed complaint in the Uber app. The friend who had ordered the Uber also filed a complaint.
However, they only received a response after the story was published in The National Post.
“Uber responded with a phone call, saying that they are going to give me a refund. I wanted to be clear that this situation is about more than the cost of a ride and that the incident I experienced was a blatant act of antisemitism.”
Mattova inquired as to whether the driver would be removed from the company, to which Uber responded that it could not give her an answer. In a subsequent email correspondence, Uber said it would speak to the driver, but no more information was provided.
“When [Uber] called [Mattova], they wanted to ask whether she had an injury from it, like an insurance company does,” added Levitt. “That is all they were interested in, not about the racism of the driver.”
Levitt sent Uber a letter demanding that it stipulate in every driver’s contract that there can be no discrimination, basing the stipulations on human rights grounds, which of course include religion and race.
Levitt confirmed that if Uber does not respond, he will file a human rights application before the Human Rights Tribunal in Ontario.
Mattova told the Post that since she posted about the incident on Instagram, scores of people have been reaching out to her to say they have experienced similar antisemitic incidents. They had also reported the incidents to Uber but had received no answer….
The only reason Uber responded in this case was because a story about the incident had appeared in The National Post. And I suspect the only reason the story appeared in The National Post was because the victim, Miriam Mattova, is so stunning.
“At this moment, I question if I do have a future in Canada,” she said.
The increasing unpleasantness expressed in Canada toward Jews prompted that melancholy answer from Ms. Mattova. When there are so many anti-Israel demonstrations across the land, that so often have descended into squalid antisemitism, where the prime minister, Mark Carney, has now recognized “a state of Palestine,” and where the Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow, told a Muslim crowd that “the genocide in Gaza affects us all,” her answer does not surprise.
Will Uber fire this driver? If not, it ought to provide a reason why such behavior is being tolerated. And Uber ought to be asked what it would do if a Christian or Jewish Uber driver had ordered a Muslim fare out of the car. I think that driver would be shown the door at once. But it’s been ten days since the incident was reported to Uber, and that Muslim driver is still working for Uber. Why?

Honestly, I wish both drivers and passengers had the option of, in the settings, ask not to interact w/ any group of their choice. I for one, would love it if I could ask Lyft not to assign me mohammedan drivers
That said, since that feature doesn’t exist, Uber should fire her, although I doubt it will. I recently tried adding an account, and setting up the payment was like pulling teeth, so I deleted the app and downloaded Lyft, which worked a lot better

Amazing that raw anti-Semitism does not meet with condemnation by a big company like Uber. There is a 1930s Nazi smell in the air all over this planet and especially in Western democracies which have a substantial Muslim population which means most.
Modern day Germans now have no use for Anti-Semitism but the immigrant Muslims in Germany have picked up the Nazi torch and spread it throughout Europe, Canada and the US.

In Canada, I hailed a cab. The driver, wearing a bright turban, handed me his phone and instructed me to enter the destination address. I told him I don’t use those devices… I gave him verbal instructions. Sitting in the back, I noticed a tv screen on his dash and we are watching an East Indian color movie with all the sound effects while he’s driving. No cab operators licence visible.

It is illegal in most states in America to be using a phone in your hands and driving .I am sure the it is illegal to be watch a TV screen and be driving. The company in charge or hiring the driver should be notified ,because insurance will find the driver watching a TV having an accident 100 percent at fault ,just like he was impaired .

Generally people who drive Ubers or Lyfts have a holder w/ their phone on it, and listen to directions. In my car, I have a navigation system (this car is from 2014, before Apple Car Play or Android Auto were available) in the middle, and if I’m driving to an unknown place, I enter the destination and listen to the navigation voice while driving, occasionally glancing at the console to see which fork to take. That is allowed under Hands-free, where you don’t hold your phone while driving
I have also ridden in cars that do have Car Play, and guess what! One can’t watch YouTube or movies on the navigation screen while driving

Yes get in an accident while watching TV or any other entertainment should not be a crime ?A voice telling you direction does not have you having your eyes stop watching the road. Their have been court cases decided on proof of people texting before accidents .There is some proof that driving while trying to view texts or watching the screen is more dangerous in some cases then being slightly then over the limit on alcohol. If I am paying for a service be it a driver or a waiter I expect them to not be playing with their phones when they are serving me.

Canada used to be one of the most advanced, civilized, polite and pristine, places on Earth. Like a Switzerland in North America. Now it is a third world semi-slum. The approach to Toronto was once the dazzling view of the Oz-like city on the Lake. One is now first greeted by the sight of bicycles on balconies of ugly high-rises when first entering Toronto. Complaining to the company, let alone complaining through apps, does not do it. The driver’s actions violate multiple civil rights laws which provide for severe penalties. Uber, especially if it is Muslim- or partly Muslim-owned, will not clean up its act because behavior like this accords with the values of its owners. The driver and Uber both need to be sued, both need to have complaints to regulatory agencies filed. Possibly there are also criminal violations, in which case criminal complaints should be made.
Canada had a brilliant PM, Harper. Now it is in the hands of the hard, anti-Israel left, and things will accelerate downhill. It is going the way of France, Britain, Belgium and other countries whose leaders are pushing them into the sewer.

A similar incident happened to a Lesbian couple in Seattle, WA. They were making out in the back of the moslame’s Uber or taxi so he pulled off to the side of the freeway, at night, and told the women to get out of his cab or uber.
