Nuno Loureiro was a Portuguese scientist regarded as one the world’s leading experts in nuclear physics and fusion energy, and a professor at MIT, where he headed the university’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center Laboratory.. He was murdered in the front hall of his home in Brookline, Massachusetts on December 15. Now Israel has been looking into a possible Iranian connection, because Professor Loureiro was known for speaking out in favor of Israel. Israeli officials are examining intelligence from recent days that suggests an Iranian connection to the murder of Prof. Nuno Loureiro, a senior nuclear scientist at MIT, who was shot dead in his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Monday evening.
This is an assessment that has not yet been verified and is not supported at this stage by official findings from the investigative authorities in the United States.
Prof. Loureiro, who had previously spoken out in favor of Israel, was a 47-year-old Portuguese-born world-renowned plasma and nuclear fusion researcher.
After being found wounded in his home, he was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead hours later. Brookline police and the Massachusetts District Attorney’s Office have opened a murder investigation, but so far no suspects have been arrested, and no motive has been released.
It would make sense to investigate a possible Iranian connection. Iran is known to have agents inside the U.S., and Tehran may have wanted to demonstrate its prowess in such targeted assassinations. The report about Loureiro being pro-Israel would certainly have put him on Iran’s radar, particularly since he was an expert in nuclear fusion, a field that would make him of unusual value to the Israelis. He may also have played a role in advising the International Atomic Energy Agency, possibly on how to better detect the 400 kilograms of enriched uranium Iran is known to be hiding, or to determine how long it would take Iran, and using what facilities, to raise the level of enrichment of uranium already enriched to 60%, just below weapons-grade, to the level of 90%.
The Iranian regime may have a plan to get back at Israel by targeted assassinations of Israeli or pro-Israel scientists in the West who specialize in nuclear physics. In a month or two, we should know much more about the lamentable murder of Professor Loureiro.

None should be eliminated from a list of those until it is concluded they were dead, locked-up or otherwise unable to have murdered the man.
Everyone knows there are iranian operatives in the U.S. with assignments to murder. But, there are many more in the business of murder who may not be connected to iran.

Dov, Loureiro was ethnically Sephardic Jewish. Religiously he may have been a non-practicing Catholic.
But he may well have been targeted because he was Jewish–or just because he supported democratic Israel. Terrible, in any case.
