UNRWA is the United Nations agency that is devoted solely to the care and feeding of those who are so-called Palestinian refugees, but in reality, most of the real refugees from the 1948 war died long ago, and the Palestinian Arabs whom UNRWA supports are their children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. The status of “Palestinian refugee” has become an inherited trait, and their numbers can only increase inexorably, with more births than deaths each year. Meanwhile, all other refugees around the world are treated by a single U.N. agency, the High Commissioner for Refugees. And none of those refugees can pass on that refugee status to their descendants.
UNRWA has long been a malevolent enterprise. Its schoolbooks are full of antisemitic venom, that it refuses to remove despite constant promises to do so. It has allowed its schools in Gaza to be used by Hamas to hide its weapons, its combatants, and in some cases, its Israeli hostages. Israeli police raided the Jerusalem headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on Monday, raising an Israeli flag over the compound.
Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Arieh King confirmed to The Press Service of Israel that the raid was carried out due to several years of unpaid property taxes and to gather intelligence on who was operating the compound. An Israeli ban on UNRWA has been in force since January 2025.
Once Israel found the proof, in Hamas documents that the IDF seized in Gaza, of UNRWA staff members who were not only members of Hamas, but had taken part in the October 7 attacks, it banned UNRWA from having any presence in Israel. But despite that ban, which went into force at the beginning of 2025, some people clearly have remained in UNRWA’s Jerusalem headquarters. Israel wanted to find out who those people are, so it seized the building. And it had another, independent reason for seizing the UNRWA headquarters. UNRWA owes millions of shekels in back property taxes on the building, and Israel will now hold onto the building until those taxes are finally paid.
“The police entered the compound for the first time to collect information about who is de facto controlling the place,” King told TPS-IL. “But for the past year, there has been activity. If it’s against the law, the law needs to be enforced.”
King added that the people holding the compound were not paying municipal property taxes. According to King, UNRWA owes the city millions of shekels in unpaid taxes. “So the municipality asked the police to find out who the city should collect the money from. UNRWA is not allowed to operate there, so who is running the place?”
UNRWA has for years not been paying the property taxes owed on its headquarters in Jerusalem. The Israelis went into the headquarters not just to find out who was inside, but who should be paying those back taxes owed by UNRWA. Apparently UNRWA doesn’t think it should. be treated just like any property owner, and has decided, during the past few years, that it won’t pay the colonial-settler apartheid genocidal Jewish state the taxes it owes on its Jerusalem headquarters. Israel is fed up with this state of affairs, and is determined to collect those taxes.
King said raising the flag was an important symbol because the compound is located in a Jewish neighborhood and it sends a message to UNRWA.
“People need to remember that UNRWA was involved in the terror attack and massacres of October 7. UNRWA cars were used by Hamas, and UNRWA compounds, schools, clinics, and kindergartens in the Gaza Strip were used by Hamas to hide Israeli hostages and to bury Israeli bodies in the compounds. There’s no difference between UNRWA in Gaza and UNRWA in Jerusalem,” he told TPS-IL.
UNRWA has been under fire for years, with Israeli officials demanding the agency be stripped of its authority in Gaza and defunded amid revelations that members of the agency’s staff participated in Hamas’s October 7 attacks. Despite Israeli, U.S., and some European opposition, the UN General Assembly on Friday voted to extend UNRWA’s mandate for three more years….
UNRWA will continue to work with those “Palestinian refugees” in all the camps where they live in the Middle East, including Gaza, but the Israelis will no longer cooperate with it because of its Hamas connections, and the Israeli police have closed its Jerusalem headquarters.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the raid on the UNRWA headquarters.
“This compound remains United Nations premises and is inviolable and immune from any other form of interference,” Guterres said in a statement.
“I urge Israel to immediately take all necessary steps to restore, preserve, and uphold the inviolability of UNRWA premises and to refrain from taking any further action with regard to UNRWA premises.”
Apparently Guterres is willing to overlook the connection of UNRWA with the terror group Hamas, including the use of its schools, kindergartens, and clinics by Hamas, the use of UNRWA vehicles by Hamas, and the participation of UNRWA staff in the Hamas atrocities on October 7, 2023.
Israel will ignore the demand of the antisemitic Antonio Guterres, who has accused Israel of “genocide” in Gaza. After all, while free with his many condemnations of Israel, Guterres has never condemned UNRWA for the contents of its schoolbooks, nor for the UNRWA staff members who joined Hamas in its orgy of rapes, tortures, mutilations, and murders on October 7.
Now we shall see just who has been inside the UNRWA headquarters building in Jerusalem that UNRWA was supposed to have vacated in January. And the city will now demand the millions of shekels that UNRWA owes the municipality in property taxes at long last be paid, or else it will formally seize that building, and either rent it out to others, or sell it outright.
Will Guterres stop berating Israel, and instead explain just what has been going on in that UNRWA building, and further insist that UNRWA pay the millions of shekels it owes in back taxes to the Jerusalem city government? Of course not.

That organization is exclusively a UN branch dedicated to “Palestinians and only Palestinians”, and if they had to have headquarters anywhere, it needed to be somewhere like Amman or Cairo. That year, the U.S. Consulate was closed by the Trump Administration and merged with the U.S. Embassy to Israel. No, a consulate is an embassy equivalent in cities outside a capital. In the capital of any country, another country has its embassy. For instance, China has its embassy in DC, and consulates in other cities – NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, et al. Conversely, the US has an embassy in Beijing, and consulates in other Chinese cities
Previously, the US embassy to Israel was in Tel Aviv, and they may have had some sort of a consulate (or not) in Jerusalem. It was after Trump made the decision to move the embassy that this became official, so Jerusalem would never have consulates, just the embassy that it has now. I’m not sure whether there are US consulates in Tel Aviv or Haifa or any other city, but that’s what they would be in cities outside the capital
The whole idea of consulates is to lighten the workload of an embassy in a big country, where the applicant may have to take long flights to get there. It makes sense for other countries to have various consulates in big countries like US, China, India…. I’m not sure what sense it makes to have consulates in Israel aside from the official embassies

UNRWA should never have been founded, and is long overdue for dissolution. There is no logical reason for treating “Palestinian refugees” differently from anyone else who is displaced – especially as most of them originally left Israel in 1948 to make way for the Arab invasion, with the intention of returning once the land had been cleared of Jews. There was no reason for Israel to roll out the red carpet for such traitors then, and there is none now.
