Friday holds religious significance for Muslims as the day of congregational prayers. However, in India, Fridays are synonymous with frequent tensions, loud protests, or mob violence that Muslims often initiate following prayers. On one recent Friday, however, Muslim mobs did not wait until post-prayer hours, and resorted to their familiar tactic of stone-throwing in the early hours of the day.
Communal tension gripped the town of Chomu in Rajasthan’s Jaipur district at around 2 a.m., after a dispute over encroachments outside a local mosque escalated into an unruly gathering that made violent attacks on law enforcement officials. The mob attempted to stop an operation to clear obstructions and structures near the mosque, injuring at least six police officers in the process. At least 50 Muslims were arrested within hours, as authorities moved to restore order. Internet services and social media platforms were suspended in the area as a precaution to prevent the spread of violence, and to stop mobs from coordinating via social media.
These stones had been lying along the roadside outside a Qalandari mosque located near the Chomu bus stand, which was one of the town’s busiest intersections for nearly 45 years. Residents and traders had repeatedly complained that these stones encroached on the public road, causing significant traffic congestion. To improve traffic movement, the district administration decided to remove these stones. Before taking action, the administration held discussions with Muslim representatives, and the removal work was initiated with mutual consent. Initially, the process remained peaceful, and the stones were successfully cleared.
However, tensions resurfaced when the Muslim side began installing permanent iron railings at the site after the stones were removed. Police and administrative officials flagged this move as a fresh encroachment on public land, reigniting the dispute late Thursday night. The Muslim crowd began opposing the move when police officials attempted to remove these materials that had been placed to re-encroach on public land. This opposition gradually escalated, heightening tensions in the area.
When a police team, with additional forces backing it, arrived around 2-3 a.m. on Friday to remove the railings and restore the road to public use, Muslim groups met them with fierce resistance. The mob descended on the scene and started hurling stones at the officers. In the ensuing violence, six police personnel sustained injuries, with several suffering blows to the head and other non-fatal wounds. The injured were rushed to a local hospital, where officials later described their condition as stable, even as the situation spiraled into a riot.
Law enforcement officials responded to the stone-throwing with a lathi (baton) charge and deployed tear gas shells to disperse the aggressors amid chaotic scenes near the bus stand. The rioters also damaged police vehicles and other property in the vicinity. To contain the situation and prevent further escalation, senior officers from multiple police stations, including Jaipur Police Lines, Harmada, Daulatpura, and Vishwakarma, were rushed to Chomu, along with riot-control units and Special Task Force contingents.
By Saturday morning, police had detained nearly 110 individuals. More suspects are being identified, and further legal action will be taken against those found responsible for fomenting unrest and attacking administrative officials. Chomu’s bus stand was effectively turned into a high-security zone, with heavy deployment of forces and ongoing flag marches to reassure residents and deter any renewed hostilities. Tensions remained palpable among sections of the community as officials worked to de-escalate the situation.
In light of the unrest, the district administration imposed a 24-hour suspension of internet services in Chomu. The restrictions, covering mobile data and social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, and X, were implemented from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday to prevent the spread of rumors and incendiary communication that could fuel further discord. In several past instances of Muslim mob violence, it has been observed that jihadist elements have used mobile-enabled social media platforms to rapidly communicate, mobilize, and gather larger crowds, allowing situations to escalate quickly on the ground.
Investigations into the causes and contributors to the violence are ongoing, with a focus on ensuring accountability for those involved in stone-throwing and other acts of aggression. This is not the first time that Muslim gangs in India have attacked police forces during encroachment-removal drives. Over the past years, several such operations have turned violent, with mobs throwing stones at law enforcement personnel enforcing court orders or clearing illegal Islamic structures. Muslim groups attacked police during an anti-encroachment drive in Kathua in June 2024, damaging JCB machines brought in to demolish an illegal mosque. A DSP and five other personnel were injured in the stone-throwing incident.
Earlier, in February 2024, the Haldwani clashes were widely reported after violence erupted during an anti-encroachment drive in the Banbhoolpura area, when police and municipal teams attempted to demolish illegal Islamic structures, including a madrasa and a mosque built on government land. The operation was met with violent resistance, as Muslim groups attacked police with stones and incendiary materials, leading to multiple deaths, injuries to security personnel, and widespread damage to public property. The incident prompted the imposition of curfew and the deployment of additional forces to bring the situation under control.
