Einat Wilf was once a left-wing Israeli and peace activist. At that time, she confidently assumed that the Palestinian Authority could be a reliable “partner for peace,” and that the Palestinians would eventually give up their desire to destroy the Jewish state. Now she has been mugged by the reality of the Hamas atrocities and the delight that so many Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims worldwide, expressed at the rapes, tortures, mutilations, and murders of Israelis. And so now, having had her left-wing ideological blinkers removed, she has decided to enter the political fray. More on Einat Wilf can be found here: “Dr. Einat Wilf: ‘We lied to ourselves about the Palestinians,'” by Sherry Makover-Balikov, Jerusalem Post, December 13, 2025:
Do Palestinians oppose two states for two peoples?
“Yes. They say aloud that they want a state alongside Israel. Quietly, they talk about the right of return. Recently, the Palestinian beauty queen’s dress had a huge key.[some Palestinians carry a key meant to symbolize the property supposeddly taken from them by the Zionists] If you listen, they are clear. They meant an Arab state in Gaza and the West Bank, and another Arab state to replace Israel through return. They never compromised. They are consistent.”…
I don’t think the Palestinians want to have two separate states west of the Jordan; they want a single, Arab state between the river and the sea, one where no Jews will remain.
“We will get closer to security. Once Palestinians understand that ideology is dead and the Jews are here to stay, they can live alongside us, and a political arrangement will be possible.”
How does Wilf propose to make Palestinians believe that the “ideology” — which she refuses to recognize is Islam itself — is “dead”? She’s come a long way, recognizing that as of now a durable peace with the Palestinians is not possible. She knows that Mahmoud Abbas is no moderate, but wants Israel destroyed, by diplomatic degrees. She says there can be no peace until the Palestinians give up their claim to a “right of return” as Palestinian “refugees” to Israel. But she still cannot admit that Islam is the fons et origo of Arab hatred of Israel, and without that admission, she cannot recognize that the war against Israel has no end, but a military assault by its enemies can be held permanently in check.
Can an ideology be killed?
“Yes. Ideologies die and are replaced. When people see their ideas have no market, they seek other worldviews. From ruin can come change, personally and collectively.”…
For 1,400 years, Islam has held Muslims in thrall; it has kept their civilization backward, their politics despotic, their peoples mostly wretched and consumed with hatred for the non-Muslim peoples among whom so many Muslims now live. But the ideology of Islam will not “die and be replaced.” Only a handful of Muslims apostatize. Because of the much higher birth rates of Muslim women, the percentage of Muslims in the world population steadily rises. But Einat Wilf, for some reason, refuses to think of Islam as an ideology.
“Welfare rests on solidarity. We put Haredim and Arabs under the welfare umbrella without solidarity. Since October 7, solidarity means defending Israel. First, everyone is enlisted. Those who refuse lose benefits and services. No need for a culture war. If you will not defend Israel, we will not give rights.”…
As of now, both Haredi Jews and Israeli Arabs do not have to serve in the military. This, Einat Wilf believes, is an error. They must feel that they belong to the state; they receive great benefits from that state, and they should be willing to defend it against those who would destroy it. If they are unwilling to serve, then they should no longer receive welfare benefits from the Israeli government.
Einat Wilf has had the scales fall from her eyes. She knows now that the Palestinians, whether of Hamas or of the Palestinian Authority, want Israel to disappear. But she believes that if Israel makes clear that it is going nowhere, and prevents the Palestinians from exercising their claim of a “right of return,” then eventually they will give up trying to destroy the Jewish state.
When she gets around to studying Islam, she’ll see that she was wrong.

I’m not sure that adding Israeli Arabs – particularly sunnis among them – is a good idea. That can easily end up being a Fifth column in Israel’s armed forces

They could be given other tasks to serve the country they live in, the way that in the Western world conscientious objectors are assigned to non-mulitary duties.

Right. Muslims in the IDF is a bad idea. Nearly 20% of all US KIAs in Afghanistan were Green-on-Blue. Never trust a Muslim, especially a Muslim with a weapon.
But as Hugh says, some sort of mandatory civil service for Israeli Arab Muslims would be appropriate, for now, until such time an allied Kufara Western world decides to push back and win this zero-sum global Islamic War, perhaps decades or centuries from now, and no longer tolerate Islam or give quarter to Muslims among us.

Yes.
Years back, right before a Middle Eastern active-duty Navy deployment, a Navy A-6 Intruder aviator told me that same thing.
Probably saved my life.
