Shared Services Canada managers were advised to scrap coffee breaks for an entire month to avoid making fasting Muslim employees uncomfortable, according to internal records released through Access To Information.
Blacklock’s Reporter says the guidance came from Ray Edwards, then the department’s chief equity and inclusion officer, who told managers to “avoid scheduling lunches or informal coffee breaks and chats” during Ramadan.
About 100 of the department’s 9,393 employees self-identified as Muslim, though not all were observant.
Edwards wrote that Ramadan, observed last winter from February 28 to March 29, includes mandatory daytime fasting for those who follow the tradition.
He reminded staff that fasting is meant to encourage self-discipline and gratitude, and said it was important to show respect for colleagues taking part in the religious observance.
He also cautioned managers not to make assumptions about who participates, noting that personal beliefs, cultural traditions and health concerns can all affect observance.
Edwards encouraged supervisors to avoid early-morning or late-afternoon meetings when “energy levels may be lower,” and not to schedule key meetings during Iftar or Suhoor.

Their are fasting days in both the Catholic and Jewish Orthodox no one every ask non-Catholics or non-Orthodox Jews to give up drinking coffee or fasting with them on their holy days fasts . Fasting by the individual is an effort on not eating or drinking not forcing others outside your religious group to fast. Just like other religious groups do not ask for “pray rooms” for their groups at work at government jobs .I personal know religious Catholics that attend mass on Holy days during their lunch hour or before or after work. I am sure many Jews do the same thing ,they do not block public streets during these events. As far as Palestinian “pride” showing up at the work place if that means having stickers or signs at your work station proclaiming your support for Hamas a terror group or some other supremist nonsense to me that is like having a Nazi flag proudly flying at your work station. It should not be acceptable practice . Next no one allowed to bring in pork base meals into the lunchroom ,no alcohol served at company parties ,a dress code for women in the work place where they must wear the cloth coffins no showing bare skin above the wrist ,hair must be covered ,it is a endless amount of appeasement. Why just coffee breaks? Are lunch breaks next? They are in many Muslim countries.
Note that Christians are not demanding that others fast during Lent, or Jews that others fast on Yom Kippur.
I am vegan and do intermittent fasting. I would *never* demand that any others do the same so as to not “offend” me. But then, I am not a supremacist Muslim.
