Two American soldiers, members of the Iowa National Guard, and a civilian interpreter were killed in a Muslim terrorist attack.
The official press release states that this was an attack by an ISIS terrorist.
The Trump administration press release claims that the Al Qaeda “President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is extremely angry and disturbed by this attack” and that it took place “in a very dangerous part of Syria, that is not fully controlled by them.”
Meanwhile there appear to be authoritative reports naming the killer as a member of the Al Qaeda government under Al-Sharaa/Al-Jolani who had been a member of his Al Qaeda group ‘HTS’ and that the attack took place during a meeting to discuss next steps.
It’s hard to know where the truth lies, but the allegation that the attack was an insider operation are very specific.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that “the attack occurred as the soldiers were conducting a key leader engagement.”
That jibes with the allegation that this was an insider attack and an ISIS terrorist should not have had access to such a meeting.
Whatever the truth of the matter is, three Americans are dead because we’re trying to prop up Qatar and Turkey’s Jihadist state.
The excuse that we’re fighting ISIS in Syria is utter nonsense. Yes, ISIS affiliates in Syria. So are Al Qaeda affiliates. We just lost 3 soldiers on the theory that we should be helping the ‘moderate’ Al Qaeda fight the ‘extremist’ ISIS.
Except that Ahmed al-Sharaa had been tasked with setting up his Jihadist group by the Caliph of ISIS. And at the Doha Forum, the Jihadist made it clear that he thinks Americans are terrorists and that his terrorists are the good guys.

We have bases in Saudi Arabia, and Turkey is a NATO member (unfortunately). A large US base inside of Israel is a complete nonstarter, and I doubt Israel would go along with such a plan regardless. Trump doesn’t get it right all the time but he’s better than any President we’ve had at dealing with Israel, the ME, and Persia than in my lifetime (I’m 53). If either Bush was in office we’d be expanding our presence in Syria. Reagan was ok, but we looked weak when we abandoned Lebanon and he essentially armed what would become Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. I don’t have to tell you how a Democrat would be handling the situation.

We are critical of anybody who considers Turkey an ally, given everything it has been doing. Qatar too, and the fact that every Gulf country has had issues w/ them should have told us a story: Saudi Arabia even now doesn’t trust Qatar, and minimizes its dealings w/ the al Thanis. While the Saudis have still been working w/ the Israelis through back-channels, that’s not true of Qatar, which has been one of the few backers of Hamas
Given all that, the best idea would be to have bases in Israel, and shut them down in countries like Turkey and Qatar. Israel would not say no, if asked. If we had bases in Israel, that would cover everything from Syria to Saudi Arabia to Egypt. If we had bases in Cyprus and Bulgaria, that would cover Turkey, which is a more dangerous enemy of ours than Russia, which lost Syria while fighting in Ukraine, and increasingly looks like a vassal of Beijing. And a base or two in the Emirates would keep a check on Iran, and ensure that the Gulf of Hormuz stays open.
