As hard as it may be for you young folks to believe, it’s true: air travel used to be fun. In fact, air travel used to be glamorous. Yes, that was a long time ago, long before 9/11 and the delay, irritation, and humiliation that has been part and parcel of the security measures instituted after that. All that, however, is only the beginning of what has gone wrong with air travel.
Now Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has issued an unusual public call for the restoration of civility in the clouds. It’s unlikely to have any major effect upon what goes on in all too many airplanes (and airports) today, but it’s refreshing to see a government official actually calling upon people to behave better, instead of rewarding their delusions, fantasies, and narcissism.

One reason: we had a lot more airlines then. All those mergers & acquisitions, bankrupcies and so on, reducing the variety of choices for passengers, has contributed to the deterioration. Yeah, one may blame the cultural differences b/w the Boomers/Gex X vs the Millennials/Gen-Z, but don’t imagine that the economic adventurism of the free markets haven’t had their role in this

I ad to your comment that the comfort and service of the airlines themselves has deteriorated to cattle car status for all but first class travelers.

The *treatment* infidels….actual citizens, Americans…received after the muzzies hijacked planes and sent other muzzies with bombs in their shoes and underwear and computers on to planes, was not the way to make air travel safer.
However, bad behavior has been rewarded by low-life politicians on the ground to the point that rapists don’t even get a slap, and people calling for the murder of those with whom they disagree only get *watched* by the police.
Yesterday, I read of a man on the subway who asked a fellow traveler to lower his voice while speaking on his phone. Instead of doing that, the loud talker began punching the man in his face and after several of those, took out a sharp blade and stabbed the man in his abdomen.
A goon left his baby girl to die in his car after it caught fire and told responders that ‘no one was in the car’ when they arrived. He was given just 22 years for the baby’s murder. He could have been given 27. He should have been eligible for life forfeiture.
Punishment should fit the crime, and no punishment *rewards* the criminal.
