President Trump has just given the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, a special prize for being a “a good friend” and a “great man,” according to Trump. And also for being willing to spend one trillion dollars to buy up large shares of American companies, and American farmland, and to deploy more money on media companies, and in American universities, to spread the Gospel of Saud.
Saudi Arabia will now be allowed to buy the top-of-the-line F-35 fighter jet, four dozen of them. Only a handful of countries have been allowed to buy this jet, all of them members of the Western alliance. In the Middle East, only one country, Israel, has them. In addition, Trump has declared that Saudi Arabia, a fabulously wealthy medieval monarchy, is now a “major non-NATO ally,” one of only 20 countries so designated. This designation will allow Saudi Arabia to be eligible for loans of material, supplies, or equipment for cooperative research, development, testing, or evaluation purposes. It will also be eligible to be a location for U.S.-owned War Reserve Stockpiles to be placed on its territory outside of U.S. military facilities. It can enter into agreements with the United States for training on a bilateral or multilateral basis. Saudi Arabia will also be eligible to enter into an MOU or other formal agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense for the purpose of conducting cooperative research and development projects on weapons.

The United States has assured Israel that it will maintain its “qualitative advantage” despite Washington’s plan to sell F-35 warplanes to Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Telegram channel Abu Ali Express on Thursday.
“They didn’t ask us before the sale of the F-35, but once it happened, I spoke with [Secretary of State Marco Rubio] and made sure of it. Mohammed Bin Salman did not receive from [US President Donald Trump] everything he wanted,” Netanyahu said….
Bin Salman got a very great deal, but not everything on his wish list. What else did Mohammad bin Salman want? He must have wanted the most advanced avionics for the American version of the F-35, but was denied. The most advanced avionics on the F-35s, in fact, are not those provided by the American manufacturer, but those that Israel developed on its own, and placed on the planes it received, instead of making do with those that Lockheed would normally include with the plane. Perhaps the crown prince wanted the Iron Dome anti-missile defense system, that Israel and the United States had developed jointly, but was turned down.
He did not get an ironclad commitment by the U.S. to come to Saudi Arabia’s aid if it attacked — akin to the NATO Article 5 guarantee. Furthermore, he wanted to be able to enrich uranium inside Saudi Arabia, but that request has been denied. The uranium will instead be enriched in the U.S. to a very low level, and then be delivered to Saudi Arabia, to be used in the nuclear energy plants it intends to build.
Netanyahu appears convinced that Israel’s “qualitative military edge” will remain. Israel’s F-35s, enhanced by Israeli avionics and electronic features, will remain a much greater threat than the F-35s sold to Saudi Arabia. He has also been buoyed by the large sales to the Americans and other foreign buyers of Iron Dome (a short-range kinetic interceptor), the laser-based anti-missile system Iron Beam, David’s Sling (medium-to-long range), and the Arrow missile (long-range, exoatmospheric).
I think that if there were a real worry among the Israelis that their country’s Qualitative Military Edge were being compromised, it would have been expressed. No such complaint has been made. They know exactly what kinds of limits on use are being put on those Saudi versions of the F-35 fighter jets (limits that might kick in if the planes were flying into Israeli airspace) what kinds of avionics and electronics Saudi pilots will have available — far inferior to what Israel’s F-35s possess — on their planes. As for now, the Israelis seem not unduly concerned with what the Crown Prince has achieved. Their QME, they believe, remains. But the Saudi military will need to be closely monitored, in case Riyadh tries to supplement what the Pentagon provides with what they can obtain from China.

Saudi F-35s will eventually be used against Israel. The Arab leaders have as their top priority their own survival. If and when Iran is no longer a threat, Arab leaders including MBS will turn on Israel in response to demands of their citizenry.

I believe that MbS is genuine as a reformer, and is trying to erode the influence of islam on his country. There has never been a Saudi initiative, say, on tourism: previously, the only visas allowed were business and pilgrimages. Part of it is that he believes that the future is w/ green energy rather than oil – something a lot of us may disagree w/. But it could also be that he sees Saudi Arabia running out of oil, and therefore trying to set up alternatives for his people
Aside from that, one thing about the Saudis is that after they spend billions for their toys, they’re loathe to use it. Just like if one’s fifth car is a Porsche, he’s unlikely to use it for anything but the most special of occasions. The last thing that the Saudis would wanna do would be to send an F35 against Israel and see it shot down: there would go billions up in smoke. Heck, even when they were genuinely threatened a few years ago by both the Iranians and the Houthis (during Biden), they didn’t use those toys. What makes one think that they’ll use them now?
Qatar is one country that Jerusalem should be nervous about, since it has now been upgraded to a non-NATO ally of the US. But their biggest threat, whether they recognize it or not, is not Iran, but Turkey. Not only are they NATO members, but they are a lot more subtle in their jihad against Israel. Those 2 are a far greater threat to Israel than a Saudi Arabia w/ F-35s
