Katie Wilson is the new mayor-elect of Seattle. She has a great deal in common with Zohran Mamdani. She calls herself a democratic socialist. Like Mamdani, she has been a community organizer and activist. In 2011 she founded the Transit Riders Union. She wants more taxes on the rich. She wants greater protections for renters. She wants to raise the minimum wage. And like Mamdani, she has no experience of serving in an executive position. In fact, she has held no political experience of any kind. She has one more thing in common with Mamdani: she doesn’t care for Israel. SEATTLE — First-term Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell conceded his reelection fight to progressive activist Katie Wilson on Thursday, handing another victory to leftist Democrats around the country frustrated with unaffordability, homelessness, public safety and the actions of US President Donald Trump’s administration.
Harrell, a centrist Democrat who previously served three terms on the City Council, led in early results. But Washington conducts all-mail elections, with ballots postmarked by Election Day. Later-arriving votes, which historically trend more liberal, broke heavily in Wilson’s favor, adding to a progressive shift to the left nationally….
The lesser-known Wilson, a democratic socialist, ran a campaign that echoed some of the themes of progressive mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in New York.
Like Mamdani, who came from behind to defeat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City Democratic primary, Wilson trounced Harrell by nearly 10 percentage points in the Seattle Democratic primary in August and quickly became the favorite to win the mayor’s office.
Wilson has also echoed Mamdani’s criticism of Israel, replying in August to a user on X who asked her what she thought of the “genocide in Gaza” that she is “strongly opposed” to.
“As Mayor of Seattle, my ability to end the violence is limited, but I will do everything I can to end the suffering of Palestinians and guarantee the safety of Muslims, Jews, and people of all faiths and backgrounds in Seattle,” she added.
Curious, isn’t it, that Wilson talked of ending “the suffering of Palestinians,” but uttered not a word about ending the suffering of Israelis, who endured the worst single attack on Jews since the Holocaust on October 7, 2023, and who have had to fight against Hamas ever since, in a war Israel did not expect and did not start. That suffering has continued, as Israelis waited for two years for the return of those who were taken captive, and the bodies of those murdered, by Hamas. Wilson doesn’t see it, doesn’t feel it, has no sympathy for the Jewish state.
When a caller asked Wilson on X in August what she thought about “the genocide,” she did not push back on that charge, but accepted its validity, saying she was “strongly opposed” to that “genocide.” She should be put on the spot, in her public meetings with journalists or with the public, to explain why she thinks Israel is committing “genocide.”
The discussion might start with something like this: “Do you think, Mayor Wilson, that Israel has demonstrated the requisite intent to commit ‘genocide’ in Gaza? After all, the IDF has made a tremendous effort to minimize civilian casualties, dropping millions of leaflets, sending millions of text messages, and making millions of robocalls, in order to warn civilians away from areas and buildings that are about to be targeted. And are you aware that the foremost American scholar of urban warfare, West Point Professor John Spencer, after studying the war in Gaza, has concluded that ‘Israel has done more and implemented more measures to prevent civilian harm than any military in the history of urban warfare’?”
What can she, this Mamdani-on-the-Pacific, respond? She is not used to difficult questions. Like so many of those hurling the charge of “genocide” at the Jewish state, she hasn’t given a thought to the legal definition of “genocide” and the need — the indispensable need — to prove “intent.” I look forward to her tortuous reply.

Those are the places which attract the younger generations which know basically nothing. I saw a report this week regarding the fact that young people enrolled in colleges and universities have the skills of a middle-school student.
They will soon regret their choices.

Many decades ago, college prep graduates in traditional and well-run high schools had a much better basic knowledge base than most of today’s college graduates in non-STEM majors.
