Hamas-Linked CAIR-Chicago Sues Northwestern to Block Antisemitism Training, Quickly Loses

The Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) once again tried to turn antisemitism on its head — this time in a federal courtroom.

On Monday, CAIR-Chicago and allied activists from Jewish Voice for Peace held a press conference outside the courthouse in Chicago to denounce Northwestern University’s mandatory antisemitism-awareness training, claiming the program “erases” Palestinian identity and “silences” anti-Zionist students. The event, predictably, received sympathetic coverage from WFLD Fox 32, which aired the activists’ remarks nearly uninterrupted under the headline: “Hearing on Northwestern Lawsuit on Training that Chills Political Expression.”

Turning antisemitism training into “oppression”

The lawsuit, filed with CAIR’s assistance, accuses Northwestern of forcing students to undergo “propaganda training.” One faculty member told cameras that the university’s program “violates students’ rights and faculty governance,” because it requires everyone to sit through a course that defines antisemitism in ways some activists dislike. Another speaker, Jonah Rubin, a professional campus organizer for Jewish Voice for Peace, insisted that half of young American Jews “recognize Israel as guilty of genocide” — a polling claim that appears nowhere in any credible survey.

Fox 32’s anchors did not challenge any of this. Viewers heard only CAIR’s side. There was no statement from Northwestern, no comment from the Jewish students who have faced harassment, and no mention that the school’s training was introduced after repeated antisemitic incidents on campus.

CAIR’s real target: the IHRA definition

At the center of the controversy is the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which the U.S. government and dozens of universities have now adopted. The definition recognizes that demonizing or delegitimizing Israel can be a modern expression of antisemitism.

CAIR has been campaigning for years to block that definition wherever it appears. The group routinely insists that applying IHRA to campus speech “criminalizes criticism of Israel,” even though it does no such thing. The Northwestern lawsuit is the latest extension of that campaign.

A legal house of cards

From a legal perspective, CAIR’s case looks feeble. Northwestern is a private university, not a state actor, so First Amendment claims don’t apply. Courts have consistently upheld mandatory bias-training programs unless they explicitly compel students to affirm a belief or punish dissent. Nothing in the record suggests Northwestern crossed that line.

Even if CAIR could shoehorn its complaint into a Title VI discrimination theory, it would still fail: Title VI forbids discrimination against protected groups, not the teaching of antisemitism awareness to prevent it.

In short, this is not a constitutional crisis. It’s a political stunt aimed at intimidating universities out of addressing antisemitism.

The media assist

Fox 32’s broadcast did exactly what CAIR needed: it treated the activists’ grievances as the news itself. The station’s anchors introduced the story as an “update on the lawsuit,” without ever explaining the university’s policy or why the training exists. In doing so, they helped normalize the idea that antisemitism education is itself an act of bigotry.

CAIR has played this game before — manipulating sympathetic local reporters to recast its ideological crusades as civil rights battles. The pattern is familiar: label antisemitism prevention “Islamophobia,” portray Jewish organizations as right-wing oppressors, and rely on a credulous media to carry the message.

In fact, the TV station WFLD has been a prime offender in promoting CAIR on the broadcast. The station aired segments that allowed CAIR-Chicago executive director Ahmed Rehab to attack State Sen. Sara Feigenholtz without rebuttal, and to deliver a “conditional-unconditional” condemnation of the assassination of embassy workers in Washington, while implying they shared blame, and to minimize the atrocities of October 7 on Chicago Live.

And in general, TV stations around the country have reported on CAIR’s various lawsuits, including those that amount to nothing more than publicity stunts.

A campaign against accountability

CAIR’s goal is not to defend free expression. It is to shield antisemitic activism from scrutiny by redefining it as “pro-Palestinian advocacy.” If the group succeeds, universities nationwide could hesitate to require any training that connects anti-Zionist rhetoric with antisemitism — exactly the chilling effect CAIR claims to oppose.

CAIR quickly lost the case, but the damage to public understanding has already been done. Once again, a major news outlet has allowed a CAIR narrative to masquerade as objective reporting — and once again, antisemitism awareness itself is the real target.
