The British were put in charge of the Mandate of Palestine following the end of WW I and the end of the Ottoman Empire by the League of Nations, the precursor to the UN, with their task being to help create the Mandate as a home for the Jewish people as put forth by the Balfour Declaration.
They did exactly the opposite curtailing Jewish migration to the Mandate at the 1938 Evian Conference by removing the Mandate as a place which could accept Jews fleeing Nazi crackdowns on the Jewish people in Germany and spreading through Europe and the 1939 White Paper which say the Mandate was “too crowded” and could not accept any more Jews, putting them at the mercy of the Nazis in Europe as well as eventually putting Arab governments in charge of deciding how many Jews could emigrate to the Mandate of Palestine.
Thus the basis upon which the British agreed to was turned upside down and the Jewish hope for a homeland in their ancestral homeland was dashed.
The British made mistake after mistake not only in the Mandate but throughout Africa drawing lines and creating nations with no regard for cultural and tribal realities. Thus everything that went wrong right up to the Gaza situation today has roots in British decisions to put Arab views ahead of Jewish hope. All in the name of Black gold but I’m sure British Anti-Semitism played a large part as well.
