When New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani makes his outrageous remarks, either his political rivals or journalists should question him at once, prepared to hold his claims up to critical inspection. So far, even as they denounce him for his charges against Israel, including his most outrageous charge, that the IDF is committing “genocide,” they have failed to state exactly why those charges are baseless. New York City’s leading Democratic mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, stated that if elected, he would recognize Israel, “but not as a Jewish state,” during the mayoral debate against Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa held on Thursday night.
When pressed on the Gaza war, Mamdani accused Israel of genocide several times, while also calling on Hamas to honor the ceasefire.
In the debate, Mamdani accused Israel three times of committing “genocide.” He appears not to know what the definition of “genocide” requires. Central to that definition is “intent.” If there is no “intent” to carry out a genocide, but civilians are killed as an unavoidable result of urban warfare where one side, Hamas, deliberately hides its weapons and combatants in civilian areas, using Gazans as human shields, that does not meet the requirement of “intent.”
We know that the IDF has no “intent” to kill civilians because of the tremendous effort it makes to minimize civilian casualties. The IDF has dropped millions of leaflets, sent millions of text messages, and made millions of robocalls, all to warn civilians away from areas and buildings about to be targeted. No wonder West Point professor of urban warfare John Spencer, after studying the Gaza War, has concluded that “Israel has implemented more precautions to prevent civilian harm than any military in history—above and beyond what international law requires.” Perhaps Zohran Mamdani would care to comment on Israel’s massive effort to protect civilians.
Mamdani should also be asked if he knows what percentage of Gaza’s civilian population has died as a result of the combat. Of the 67,000 dead (as reported by Hamas), 26,000 have been, according to the Israelis, members of Hamas. And historically, 800 people die each month in Gaza from accidents and diseases; over 24 months of war, that means 19,200 people have died of non-combat-related causes.
Now let’s do the math for Mr. Mamdani, with his claim of “genocide”: 67,000-26,000=31,000; 31,000-19,200=11,800 civilians have been killed as a result of the war, which is much less than 1% of Gaza’s population of 2.2 million. Does Zohran Mamdani think that the war-related deaths of 1% of Gaza’s civilian population constitutes “genocide”? Some of the many journalists covering Mamdani should ask him that question, as well as ask him whether he would agree that the IDF’s effort to warn civilians to move out of harm’s way demonstrates that there is not the requisite “intent to comment genocide.”
“Of course I believe [Hamas] should lay down their arms. Calling for a ceasefire means ceasing fire, that means all parties have to cease fire and put down their weapons, and the reason that we call for that is not only for the end to the genocide but also unimpeded access of humanitarian aid,” he said, adding that he would continue to push to address “the conditions that preceded this, conditions like the occupation, the siege and apartheid.”
A “ceasefire’ is just that: a cessation of fire by both sides. But it does not mean that both sides must surrender their arms. The Trump plan, to which Hamas agreed, requires the terror group, but not Israel, to disarm completely. Does Mamdani remain unaware of what Hamas had committed itself to, and that it now says it has no intention of fulfilling?
What “condition” in Gaza preceded the Hamas attacks? There was no “occupation” of the Strip; every last Israeli was pulled out of Gaza in 2005. Nor was there a “siege” by Israel before October 7, 2023. Not only did Israel supply Gaza with electricity and water before the war broke out, but 19,000 Gazans entered Israel every day to work, receiving wages from Israeli employers that were several times greater than what they could earn in Gaza. And just before the October 7 attack, the Israeli government had been planning to raise the number of Gazans allowed in to work. Furthermore, the Rafah crossing on Gaza’s border with Egypt was open until the Gaza War began. What kind of a “siege” is that?

Also, if the US is not a signatory to the ICC, NYC can’t enforce ICC rules in violation of federal law, and international relations are a federal, not a state subject

No primary even in a blue city of close to 9 million you could get 5 or 6 republicans that are not currently holding office ,but held office in the city in the pass to run in a primary. You have an ex-governor (Cuomo) who resign in shame killing thousands during COV in nursing homes and facing sexual harassment charges .You have a communist / jihadist who is chummy with terrorist and terrorist organization a card carrying Moslem brotherhood member according to the voting guide .An over the hill activist who never accomplished anything who always runs for office for attention. I think the real problem is that the bulk of New Yorkers – the ones who used to vote for Giuliani and even Bloomberg – have fled to Florida, leaving an overwhelming communist majority in the city. Where no Republican is bold enough to stand for office
I’m not a NY resident and avoid that state, let alone the city, like the plague. However, had I been there, I’d have voted for Adams, b’cos even though he started badly, he saw the damage being a sanctuary city was doing to NYC and was willing to reverse course, even though he was opposed by City Hall. If elected, he’d have worked w/ Trump in cleaning up NYC, and maybe even salvaged his party to an extent. But now it’s completely lost to the DSA, which is even more scary than the old Communist Party of the USA used to be (not sure whether they still exist)
