“Real Time” host Bill Maher called out comedian Dave Chappelle Friday for downplaying free speech in America during his performance at the Riyadh Comedy Festival in Saudi Arabia last week.
“Dave Chappelle … was in the press today saying that you can speak more freely over here than in America,” Maher told comedian Louis C.K., who is set to perform at the Saudi comedy festival on Monday.
C.K. let out a laugh and conceded, “I don’t know if that’s true.”
“Oh, it’s not true,” Maher said.
He added that if Chappelle truly believed that Saudi Arabia had fewer restrictions on free speech than America, he should have tested that claim by doing a routine about the Prophet Muhammad.
Reacting to Maher’s suggestion, C.K. quickly clarified that Chappelle is a Muslim.
“So, it depends on who you are and what you want to talk about.”
According to The New York Times, Chappelle told an audience of about 6,000 people, “Right now in America, they say that if you talk about Charlie Kirk, that you’ll get canceled. I don’t know if that’s true, but I’m gonna find out.”
The Times reported that Chappelle was met with “whoops, cheers and applause” after telling the crowd, “It’s easier to talk here than it is in America.”…

I’d contest one thing Bill Maher said. His implication was that one could do a comedy skit on Muhammad here in the US. If one dared do that, it’s not the police who’d go after one, but rather random jihadists. The Saudis have loosened a lot of rules (I saw on Armin Navabi’s channel today that they have decided to allow foreigners to start owning stakes up to 49% in real estate investors in Mecca, even though the ban on non-muslims entering Mecca is still intact. Non-muslims can go to Medina, however, but not into the masjid al haram, where Muhammad is supposedly buried along w/ the first 3 caliphs). However, especially for them, allowing blasphemy about Muhammad – it’s still too early in their deislamization process to allow that
But Maher could have made his point better by challenging Dave Chappelle to do a skit on MbS, and see how that went

The other thing about Dave Chappelle’s original comment: he’s miffed that he can’t mock Charlie Kirk, a guy who’s just been murdered, who not only has a grieving widow but 2 babies who’ll never see their dad again. Or more precisely, he’s miffed about consequence culture – that if he mocks Charlie, that patrons being disgusted by his “joke” and disowning him, and never paying him again – that’s the “lack of freedom” that he’s talking about. Well, Dave, there is a difference b/w mocking people who are confused about what sex they are, vs mocking someone who’s just been murdered and has no way of responding. Let alone a ghoulish piece of behavior for any human
The problem that these clowns on the Left don’t get – be it Chappelle, Kimmel, et al – that freedom of speech doesn’t mean that
⮞ People have to like their jokes
⮞ Other people have to give them a platform, be it a TV time slot or a stage
⮞ People have to subdue their disgust if the sentiments underlying those “jokes” are despicable
