The Trump plan for peace in Gaza is taking up all of the bandwidth devoted by the media to the Middle East. Meanwhile, the world has lost sight of what has been happening in Syria. The mainstream media has decided that the country’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, having traded his battle fatigues for a suit and tie, speaking soothingly of how he wishes to have peace with all of his neighbors, has been accepted as someone the West can deal with, and the Trump administration has already lifted some sanctions on the country. But the killing of the members of minority groups — the Alawites, the Kurds, and especially, the Druze — continues.
In horrified recognition of that continuing pogrom of the Druze, and as a way to publicize their plight, Syria’s envoy to Dubai has just resigned, citing the “genocide” of the Druze in the Sweida governorate. Syrian Consul in Dubai Ziad Zahreddine announced his resignation from the Syrian government in protest against what he described as “the genocide campaign in Sweida,” accusing “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham forces and Bedouin tribes” of carrying out the massacre under the direct supervision of top leadership in Damascus.
Ahmed al-Sharaa has denied that his own forces, the men of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham whom he led against the Assad regime and who now dominate the national army, were involved in the campaign against the Druze last summer, when more than a thousand were killed. He claimed, falsely, that the army troops had been sent to Sweida to protect the Druze from the Bedouin attacking them. Instead, they led the pogrom against the Druze.
Clearly, the Syrian government is embarrassed and angry over Ziad Zahreddine’s heartfelt cry about Damascus being engaged in a “genocide” against the Druze. He has no future in Syria, as he no doubt knew when he made his statement. A truth-teller like that will have to remain outside Syria if he wishes to stay out of jail for having committed what Ahmed al-Sharaa no doubt considers an act of treason. Should the Druze eventually gain, with the help of both the IDF military and American diplomatic support, not just autonomy, but a state of their own with its capital in Sweida City — there are 750,000 Druze in Syria, and another 750,000 Druze in Lebanon who might want to join such a state — they will hail as a hero their earliest Syrian defender, Ziad Zahreddine.

Was Ziad Zahreddine a willing envoy of the HTS regime to Dubai? Or is it more likely that he was a holdover from the Assad regime? I’m suspecting the latter. In which case, how did he just continue in his job, given the major government change that happened about 10 months ago? Also, does he now return to Syria where he would get killed, or can he apply for asylum in Dubai, which is one of the countries that thinks that Syria has normalized?
Anyway, genocide by muslims is never an issue in today’s world, so his protests will go unnoticed. Given that standard, whenever there is a genocide of muslims in those rare cases – Burma, China,… I’ll not say that it shouldn’t happen either: I’ll just shrug and say “Cry me a river (to the sea)” 😈
