Indonesia: Muslims storm church during worship service, force Christians to disperse

As is so often the case, if the roles were reversed, which they would not be and should not be, the media would never let you hear the end of it. But this? No coverage. It doesn’t the media paradigm that Muslims are always victims, so it doesn’t exist.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – A group of at least 20 self-styled Islamic fundamentalists stormed a shop-house (a building common in Southeast Asia, used for both commercial and residential purposes) and forcibly dispersed the faithful of the Bethel Indonesia Church (Gbi) in the middle of a religious service.

The incident dates back to 21 September but has only emerged in the last few hours. It took place in the suburb of Gerendeng Pulo, in the city of Karawaci, Tangerang Regency (Banten Province).

Local sources tell AsiaNews that this is not an isolated incident, but a further reminder of a social and institutional framework in which intolerance is ‘normalised’ and it is therefore even more urgent to address the issue of religious violence.

A video that has gone viral on the internet shows a group of Muslim residents of the area, linked to the radical and extremist wing, forcibly interrupting the Sunday celebrations of the GBI in Gerendeng Pulo, Karawaci, in the second incident in a few days.

A similar incident had already occurred on 14 September: the video shows a group of about 20 people shouting and threatening members of the Protestant community, who meet every week in a two-storey shop on Otista Street, in the sub-district of Gerendeng, which is used as a place of worship.

One person shouts that ‘you cannot hold [worship] activities here: Go worship somewhere else, but not here.’ A man in a black jacket, identified as the neighbourhood chief, threatened to revoke the identity cards of residents who authorised the house church.

However, according to GBI representatives, the congregation had already collected about 20 signatures of support and completed the necessary paperwork. Reverend Melki reported that it was ‘the second interruption’ and that the service ‘was delayed by almost an hour until the crowd dispersed.’…

  1. We are living in Biblical times like no other generation. We saw ISRAEL revived after 2,000 years on May 14, 1948.   3. And why are Christians allowing moslems to “storm church during worship”. There should be armed people (with the will to use their weapons) at the doors of the church to prevent such disruption of Christian worship and defilement of a Christian church. It’s time for Christians to stand up and defend themselves and the Faith. Absent that these incidents of islamic violence against Christians will continue. It’s well beyond the time that islam is taught that this kind of behavior from its adherents will result in consequences. Serious consequences for those that perpetrate violence against Christians.

    (Of course, I’ll be accused of not being a True Christian (whatever that is) for the above comment but being a sheep to the slaughter by islamic hands is not an option.)

      Not from this devout Christian.

      • He means by me. Christians can have someone at the doors of their church to keep out those intent on killing. That is not the same as going out, as he has said before, and killing muzzies every time a Christian is murdered, and burning down muzzie’s barracks every time a church is burned.

        And a True Christian, knows what that is. He has also said that he ‘is done’ with being Christian.

          I was just trying to emphasize that Christians have a right to defend themselves against specific jihad attacks.

        • You are welcome, James. And I had the feeling that was the reason for your response. Never having met you in person, I have still come to know a lot about you from your comments here.

    • Christians in Indonesia are less than 10% of the population–and the government is on the side of the Jihadists. Christians getting a permit to build a church is almost impossible–the government would probably arrest the Christians.

    • The incident occurred in Indonesia (87% Muslim), with all that that entails.

  4. Christians do not have to allow themselves to be doormats. Christians can stand up for themselves and fend off attacks.

    • Most sadly we will have to defend ourselves as our government leaders can’t and won’t see the problem for all the money in front of them from Islam petrodollars..

  5. Christians have not been told by Christ to mount an armed force and go a-killing. In fact, He said, “When they persecute you in one city, flee to the next.”
    He promised to ‘return before the circuit of the cities has been completed.’
    He warned Christians that there would be ‘persecution to the death,’ and that Christians would ‘be haled before kings and governors; and hated by the world’ because of His Name.

    What is happening today, is exactly what Christ said would happen just before He returns.

  6. I refer to Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Christian former governor of Djakarta in Indonesia. His Muslim political opponents claimed that according to the Qur’an soera 5 verse 51 it is forbidden to vote for a Christian. Purnama defended him against this claim and was charged with to two years in jail because of blasfemie. So this church attack by Indonesian Muslims doesn’t surprise me at all. It will get worse.

  7. There is no tolerance in Islam. But they expect us to tolerate their mosques shouting calls for worship at 5 in morning and late evenings, radicals celebrating Eid and Muharram and blocking roads for Namaz. This is the future of every non-Muslim country if they don’t stop rapid multiplication of Muslims.
