A controversy that began earlier this month in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has spiraled into a series of violent protests and clashes under the banner of “I Love Muhammad” and has triggered police cases, arrests, and massive damage to public property across multiple Indian states. Officials in states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana have reported violent incidents linked to Muslim demonstrations that turned into stone-throwing, arson, and attacks on police outposts at several locations.
The controversy began on September 4 during a Barawafat (Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi) procession in Rawatpur, Kanpur, when a Muslim group displayed an “I Love Muhammad” banner, prompting residents and local groups to object to the placement of the Islamic banner. However, the main tensions escalated after posters belonging to a non-Muslim community were torn during the Islamic celebrations. The Kanpur Police subsequently registered FIRs naming several organizers from the Muslim community, including Sharafat Hussain, Shabnoor Alam, Babu Ali, Mohammad Siraj, Fazu Rahman, Ikram Ahmad, and Iqbal.
While Islamic groups are trying to set a narrative that the arrests were made simply for proclaiming “I Love Muhammad,” thereby portraying themselves as victims again, police officials have clarified that the FIRs were not solely for those words, but for encroachment and the tearing of religious posters of non-Muslims.
Once news from Kanpur spread, several towns across Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Bareilly, and Unnao, saw processions and rallies in which Muslims carried placards with the same slogan. The Kanpur incident thus became the epicenter of a broader campaign by Islamic groups that resonated with Muslim clerics and local bodies across the state.
At several protest sites, Muslim men formed groups to raise openly the infamous slogan “Sar Tan Se Juda,” which translates to “the head (to be) separated from body,” under the guise of what are claimed to be peaceful protests related to the “I Love Muhammad” banner controversy. In Kaushambi District, Uttar Pradesh, videos show Muslim youths, including minors, chanting “Sar Tan Se Juda” during a procession in Manjhanpur; photos and videos from this site quickly went viral and drew concern. In Unnao, more than 100 Muslims staged an unauthorized procession near a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Durga, and soon resorted to stone throwing, accompanied by the disturbing recitation of “Sar Tan Se Juda.” Although influential Muslim personalities describe these demonstrations as peaceful, the open call for beheading opponents can hardly be reconciled with the notion of peace in any civilized society.
In many locations, continuing with the facade of “peaceful protests,” Muslims have placed the “I Love Muhammad” banners, boards, and tents on private and public properties such as roads, gates, by banks, and other places clearly not belonging to the Muslim community, without obtaining permission.
It was inevitable that the violence would escalate, and soon it swept across multiple states.
The protests reached Uttarakhand and took a violent turn in Kashipur on September 21, when an unauthorized procession marched through the Alikhan area, despite restrictions. When police intervened, participants allegedly attacked officers with stones and sticks, damaging multiple police vehicles. Authorities registered FIRs against more than 500 rioters, with a few named as prime accused. Following the unrest, local authorities also launched demolition drives against the illegal Islamic structures in the area.
Officials described the violence as premeditated, pointing to video footage that showed large crowds defying restrictions. The situation in Kashipur highlighted how quickly the movement had escalated from a religious procession to direct confrontations with law enforcement.
Gujarat witnessed several violent flare-ups connected to the “I Love Muhammad” controversy, particularly in the Gandhinagar district. A group from the Muslim community broke shop shutters, vandalized shops and vehicles, set fire to a shop, torched multiple vehicles, threw stones, and attacked police vehicles in Bahiyal Village in Dehgan Taluka. Again, in Godhra, Muslim protesters allegedly vandalized a police outpost (B-division), burning papers, damaging furniture, windows, and vehicles; FIRs were filed against 88 people, and 17 arrests were made in that case.
In Maharashtra and Telangana, particularly in Mumbai, Nagpur, and Hyderabad, Islamic groups organized marches with “I Love Muhammad” posters, and police in several areas reported violations of public order regulations. Authorities in these states increased security around sensitive areas to prevent escalation.
Wherever violence erupted, Muslims engaged in the common pattern of stone-throwing at police personnel, damage to government vehicles, and vandalism of police outposts. In Kashipur, they damaged police jeeps and bikes. In Godhra, they ransacked a police station. In both states, FIRs included charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, and assault on public servants.
The Muslim protests have also drawn support from Muslim political leaders. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi amplified the issue nationally after he posted on social media that “I Love Muhammad is not a crime,” in an attempt to mislead people into believing that the police actions were only against the seemingly harmless statement.
A controversial Islamic personality and cleric, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, made strong statements against the government, and his speeches reportedly mobilized crowds in western Uttar Pradesh.
In Bareilly, Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) leader Dr. Nafees Khan courted controversy after a video surfaced in which he threatened that if a police officer dared to remove the “I Love Muhammad” banners, he would have the officer’s hand chopped off and his uniform stripped away. The video quickly went viral, prompting the police to register an FIR against Khan, who is accused of openly inciting violence in the guise of defending the banner campaign.
Every year, Islamic forces tend to flare up communal tension around Hindu festivals such as Durga Puja and Navratri, and this year appears no different. What began as a relatively minor dispute over a banner has escalated rapidly, creating an atmosphere of tension and menace across multiple states during the peak of Hindu celebrations. The scale and coordination of the protests, with dozens of banners appearing on public and private properties, large crowds mobilized seemingly overnight, suggest a level of planning that goes beyond spontaneous demonstrations, pointing to deliberate efforts to amplify tensions nationwide.

I love Mohammed? Why? He was a keeper of salves with no desire to free them ever. He was a warlord making war on not only people in Arabia but throughout the world. Of course you might be able to save your life if you paid a fine or “infidel” tax. So what is robbery other than “Give me your money or you lose your life”. Today thousands of innocent people are tortured and killed in his name. Africans, Jews, Christians, Hindus, etc. all are targeted. People who believe in him drive vehicles into crowds killing and maiming innocents. Even within his religion, adherents kill each other as we see between Sunni Muslims and Shi’te Muslims. There is little love or understanding or forgiveness in his religion. Airplanes full of families are hijacked and crashed by the hijackers killing everyone on board. His religion has spread suffering throughout every continent. What exactly is to love about such a man and his religion? Many of his followers kill themselves as they kill many innocent people and those suicide/killers are told they are given a special place in Paradise. Is that sick or isn’t it. Palestinians raped and murdered and even put infants to death inside ovens. That is lacking in everything we think of as believing in humanity and humane behavior.
