Campus stormtroopers, Francesca Albanese, and Rashida Tlaib all insist that Israel has been committing “genocide” in Gaza. But that’s not enough. Hundreds of U.N. staff at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk have written to ask him to explicitly describe the Gaza war as an unfolding genocide, according to a letter seen by Reuters.The letter sent on Wednesday said the staff consider that the legal criteria for genocide in the nearly two-year Israel-Hamas war in Gaza have been met, citing the scale, scope and nature of violations documented there.“OHCHR has a strong legal and moral responsibility to denounce acts of genocide,” said the letter signed by the Staff Committee on behalf of more than 500 employees, which called on Turk to take a “clear and public position.”
Five hundred employees of the OHCHR have called on their director, Volker Turk, to take a “clear and public position” on labelling the Jewish state’s war on Hamas as “genocide.” Five hundred sounds like a lot, but the OHCHR has 2,000 employees, which means that 75% of them refused to sign the letter urging Turk to accuse Israel of “genocide.” Apparently, even at the OHCHR, not everyone is convinced that the Jewish state has been committing “genocide.”
“Failing to denounce an unfolding genocide undermines the credibility of the U.N. and the human rights system itself,” it added.It cited the international body’s perceived moral failure for not doing more to stop the 1994 Rwanda genocide that killed more than 1 million people.
These OHCHR employees are unable to see the difference between a real genocide, as in Rwanda, where over a three-month period the country’s Hutus killed almost one million pacific Tutsis, and the situation in Gaza where, in the context of a war, the IDF killed at most 19,400 civilians. That figure is arrived at as follows: a total of 63,000 total deaths in Gaza, as reported by Hamas, of which 26,000, as calculated by the IDF, were Hamas combatants, and of the remaining 37,000 civilians, 17,200 — 800 a month for 22 months — died from non-combat-related causes, such as accidents and diseases. That means only 19,800 civilians have died as a result of the war.
The total population of Gaza is 2.2 million. The IDF has killed in war less than 1% of the civilian population of Gaza. Does that sound like “genocide”?
“Genocide” also requires intent. Does the IDF try to kill civilians? No, it does not. In fact, it engages in a tremendous effort to warn civilians away from sites and buildings that are about to be targeted. To this end, it has dropped millions of leaflets, sent millions of text messages, and made millions of robocalls. Does that sound like “genocide”?
West Point Professor of Urban Warfare John Spencer, who has studied the Gaza war since it began, has concluded that in Gaza “Israel has done more and implemented more measures to prevent civilian harm than any military in the history of urban warfare.”
Israel did not start, and did not want, a war with Hamas. The IDF went to war not against the people of Gaza, but only against the Hamas terrorists who on October 7, 2023 had raped, tortured, mutilated, and murdered 1,200 Israelis; the goal has always been twofold: to have the hostages returned, and to make sure that Hamas never again can threaten the people of Israel. There have been, as there have been in all wars, some unavoidable civilian deaths. But we need to keep demanding answers to the following: how many civilians have died in Gaza as a result of the war, what does the IDF do to keep such deaths at a minimum with all those warnings, and what does Hamas do to maximize them by embedding itself and its weaponry in civilian areas and buildings? We know now that of the 63,000 killed so far in Gaza, 26,000 were combatants, another 17,200 were civilians who died from diseases and accidents, and another 19,800 were civilians who died as a result of the war.
Hamas now claims that 63,000 people have died in Gaza, while deliberately refusing, as it has from the start of the war, to distinguish between Hamas fighters and civilians. As of January 2025, the IDF believed that it had killed 18,000 Hamas members during the first 15 months of war, or 1,200 a month. In the eight months since, it is reasonable to assume, as a very low estimate, another 1,000 Hamas deaths each month, or 8,000, providing a total of 26,000 Hamas combatants killed to date. Of the 37,000 civilian deaths, eight hundred deaths a month for twenty-two months were the result of accidents and disease, which accounts for another 17,200, 19,800 civilians, then, died as a result of the war.
Three-quarters of Turk’s staff at the OCHCR refused to sign the letter. Apparently even they are not convinced that Israel is guilty of “genocide.” Nor has there been any sign of “intent” to commit genocide by the IDF, an essential element of the crime. In fact, Israel makes tremendous efforts to warn civilians away from areas about to be targeted. The result is that fewer than 1% of the 2.2 million civilians in Gaza have been killed as a result of combat. None of this suggests a “genocide.” Nor does Israel appear to be committing “genocide” when it has managed to deliver more than 100 million meals to Gazans since mid-May. Those who have not lost their heads in a miasma of anti-Israel animus should be able to understand.

We need some figures to throw at people who cite this sort of rubbish and endorse it.
We need the rough best-guess professional estimates of 1/ what percentage of the world’s total Jewish population was murdered during the Shoah, say 1936-1945 and 2/ what percentage of the total population of a/ Christian Armenians and b/ Christian Greeks and c/ Christian Assyrians was murdered by Turkish Muslims (and other varieties of Muslim), 1890s-1917 and 3/ what percentage of the total population of Tutsis in Rwanda was murdered by Hutus, during the Rwanda genocide and 4/ what percentage of the total population of Cambodia was murdered during the period known as ‘ the killing fields’ (during which Cambodians frenzied by a vile ideology mass-murdered fellow Cambodians). Or if one went further back in time one could refer to the mind-bogglingly huge numbers of Hindus and other Indian non-Muslims estimated to have been murdered by Muslims during the jihad conquest and occupation of India….millions upon millions, and that at a time when the world’s total population of humans was a lot smaller than it is now.
I haven’t gone looking for the statistics – i.e. estimated total population of targeted group prior to the mass murders, versus estimated number of survivors after the murder spree was stopped/ subsided – but.. I suspect that comparing the urban-warfare death toll in Gaza (civilians-only, versus deaths in combat of armed combatants) to those REAL genocides might at least cause a few people to wake up and realize that two years of full-on armed combat in a densely-populated urban area has killed a whole lot FEWER people than was achieved in similar periods of time by *real* mass murderers.
