Canada: Quebec bans prayer in the street, taking aim at Islamic assertion of dominance

This Fox News story about the controversy tries to exonerate Islam from any responsibility for the behavior of the Muslims who are engaging in public prayer. Mathew Giagnorio quotes a saying attributed to Muhammad forbidding praying in the road, and writes that “prayer must not endanger others or disrupt public order. Even Islamic law recognizes the folly of obstructing communal life with ritual performance. Quebec, in other words, is not contradicting Islam but upholding a principle embedded within it.”

That is not actually the case. “Islam must dominate and is not be dominated,” said Muhammad (Sahih Al-Jami 2778). The public prayer is a display of that dominance and supremacy. The idea that prayer must not disrupt the public order is a provision for Muslim countries, not for non-Muslim ones in which Islam is asserting itself.

Late last month, Quebec Premier François Legault and Secularism Minister Jean-François Roberge announced that they will introduce a new law this fall to ban prayer in public spaces. The measure comes in response to what Roberge described as the “proliferation of street prayer” — a practice that has become synonymous with mass Islamist displays, particularly in the wake of pro-Hamas and pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Street prayer is no longer the image of quiet devotion. From Toronto to Times Square, it is political theater, often conducted en masse, blocking roads, obstructing entrances and projecting intimidation into the heart of civic life.

Legault was blunt: “When you want to pray, you go in a church or a mosque— not in a public place.” Roberge added that such practices generate unease, erode neutrality and risk public order.

The echoes of Bill 21, Quebec’s 2019 law banning public-sector workers from wearing religious symbols, are impossible to ignore. That earlier law asserted Quebec’s right to defend laïcité — or secularism, in French — with teeth. Now the province is extending the same logic to the streets.

Predictably, civil liberties organizations and establishment Muslim leaders have raised alarms. Based in Toronto, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association responded to the plans with a statement that a ban on public prayer collides head-on with protections of religion, expression and assembly in Canada’s Charter, a part of the country’s constitution. The Canadian Muslim Forum labeled the proposed law stigmatizing. And Montreal Archbishop Christian Lépine went so far as to claim that banning public prayer would be “like forbidding thought itself.”

The rhetoric is heavy, but it misses the core issue: Public prayer in this context is not an act of private conscience. It is a performance of power in shared civic space.

To say so is not “Islamophobic.” It is Islamic. The Prophet Muhammad himself cautioned against praying in the middle of the road. One hadith, or saying of the prophet, in Sunan Ibn Majah records: “Beware of stopping to rest and praying in the middle of the road, for it is the refuge of snakes and carnivorous animals.”

Beyond metaphor, the point is clear: Prayer must not endanger others or disrupt public order. Even Islamic law recognizes the folly of obstructing communal life with ritual performance. Quebec, in other words, is not contradicting Islam but upholding a principle embedded within it….

  1. Well duh! Some of the kids when I was growing up played stickball in then street. After a warning from the NYPD, they rounded up the whole bunch and brought each to his parents and explained tha5 these kids are blocking traffic. The kids never blocked traffic again. By the way, the cops did not have to chase anybody. All followed the officers’ instructions and walked single file to their houses.

    These muzzies on the other hand are at an age where they should know better, than to block traffic with 5heir asses up in the air to Allah.

    • Yep. Anyway, even if it passes it will never be enforced. Perhaps the best way to start the ending of Islam is to take away the religion part. We can proceed from there. Tiny steps to the abolition 9f this thing called Islam.

        • This morning in Australia, Sunday morning, England invaded, tv news showed an anti immigration rally by 100,000 people in England and t thought that maybe people there have had enough and are fighting back. I saw a banner saying Deport all illegals. 100,000 is an impressive turn out.

        • Thanks for the information, tgusa. I went on what channel 7 news said. Maybe, finally, big numbers of people are getting fired up. It seems to be happening in Australia as well the last couple of weekends there have been what the news called anti immigration and anti corruption rallies. It seems to be a group called advance Australia. I see this as very good. Our immigration policy has been hopeless because they have allowed too many people too quickly. Not enough houses, hospitals, schools to cope. Cost of houses and rents are staggeringly high.young people can’t afford to buy houses the way they once could. The Dutch American woman is a bit like our American Iranian Australian firebrand Rita Panahi.

        • They showed a little bit of Elon musk on the news coverage, tgusa. I remember you were a fan of Rita Panahi. I used to see her on sky news. I liked a lot of the commentators there. You could see in her eyes how much she was enjoying ripping into the lefties. However Australians voted our far left Labor govt back in in a very clear win so I think conservatives like me and sky presenters are in the minority. There seem to be signs of an awakening lately.

        • It’s very explainable. The native British population is what they want to disappear. The left Allies with them in a marriage of convenience. Capitalism, freedom and Britain are deeply entwined, and both of these forces oppose these things and want to see it gone.

          If the left can take control of the purse of the nation, they can basically pay people off to vote for them, and invite more migrants with very generous benefits and special rights for their religion. The migrants expect gradual changes in the direction of sharia law as a reward for their mooching services, along with lax enforcement of criminal and cheap sexual assaults, and free cheap churches to convert to mosques instead of expensive builds.

          The final showdown will be migrants vs the left one day in the future, when their marriage splits. Muslims will run them over easily and won’t need a majority. The left will be betrayed as soon as the good native people are gone or totally beaten into demoralization and submission, stripped of all assets. Once the investors and capitalists flee , all hell will break loose, as both of these forces produce nothing of value.

          Muslims are there to basically take free stuff and hope to take over a docile ignorant society.

  5. I recall an episode of “The Andy Griffith Show,” where the new rich (spoiled) kid was riding his bike on the sidewalk and Barney told him to stop. He didn’t and Andy took his bike away.

    muzzies get down and dirty in the streets to cause non-muzzies trouble and inconvenience. Not because they don’t have other places to verbalize their preying, but all because they know infidels don’t like seeing it, hearing it, and having to detour around the foul mob.

    They freely build their many barracks all over the place….I remember when bo got the DoJ to file suit on behalf of one mob of muzzies after a little town said “no permit to build”….and yet, they also want to take over the streets. The proposed law should include a provision for police permission to be sought for special occasion processions etc. – otherwise it will outlaw peaceful observances which have occurred for years, and events like March for Jesus. And it should stipulate a minimum number above which the ruling applies – otherwise a Christian who offers to pray with a person in distress sitting on a park bench would find such ministry criminalised, as would organisations like 40 Days for Life.
    It is a pity when one group’s abuse of freedom results in a crackdown across the board.

  7. Praying in the middle of a public thoroughfare is disrupting public business commerce. I’m pretty sure there is a law against that.

  8. It’s unfortunate that Christians are so passive that they have never responded in kind, praying as a congregation in the streets. This would have caused an earlier adoption of laws prohibiting it and the extra benefit of nulifying any claims that it is biased. No group would be allowed to pray in the streets, blocking traffic, regardless of religion, even if it was to a statue.

    When Muslims make public displays, copy them. Let’s see signs saying, “Christian law Will Rule, To Hell With Your Caliphate, Christianity Will Free Women, Equal Inheritance For Women, Female Mutilators Will Burn In Hell, Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life”, etc. That should get religious demonstrations stopped.😄

    • Various places have seen Christian preachers arrested for standing on street corners, not blocking any traffic…car or foot.
      No one is afraid of Christians as so many are of muzzies. No danger in telling a Christian to move or stop preaching as there is in telling a muzzie to move or stop screeching.

          Being Christian means following Jesus’ commands and trying to walk as He walked, do the things His way, live the way He taught His followers.

          Christians all over the world are being persecuted….and Jesus warned that this would be so. He said, “You will be persecuted for my Name.” And He said, “You will be put to death.”

          Christians who truly are, have Faith that Jesus is pleased when they obey His commandments and that He will rescue them in His time and in His way.

          Those who make friends with muzzies for whatever *reason,* are not following Jesus’ commandments nor His Way. And the “pope” is just one individual. No one should follow his example.

  10. The first news report I watched (on the BBC as far as I recall, but I only came in on the news partway through) – at lunchtime here in Britain – estimated numbers at about 150,000. Subsequently, I saw the BBC reporting at least 100,000 – but I could believe there were considerably more than that.
