British perfidy toward the Jewish state goes a long way back. When the U.K. held the Mandate for Palestine, instead of doing as Article 6 of the Mandate required, which was to “facilitate immigration” by Jews and to “encourage close settlement by Jews on the land,” the British did nothing to either facilitate immigration by Jews or to encourage “close settlement by Jews on the land.”
In fact, the British did little to protect the Jews from Arab attacks; news of those attacks discouraged Jews in Europe from moving to Mandatory Palestine. After the Nebi Musa riots in Jerusalem in 1920, the British arrested not the Arab attackers, but Zev Jabotinsky, who had tried to assemble a Jewish defense force. The British stood by as the Arabs massacred, or drove out, all of the Jews of Hebron, the second most sacred city in Judaism, in 1929. During the Arab Revolt of 1936-1938, the British did little to protect the Jews though they did fight the Arabs who attacked their own troops.
One British officer, however, did something to protect the Jews during the revolt. This was Captain Orde Wingate, a Christian Zionist whose sympathies were with the Jews. He proceeded to teach them how to protect themselves from Arab marauders by taking the fight to the enemy, forming “night squads” that would go out to attack the Arab terrorists before they could strike. For the help he gave Jews, Orde Wingate was not praised by his superiors in the Mandate administration, but instead, ordered out of Mandatory Palestine. He eventually ended up fighting the Italians in Ethiopia and later, the Japanese in Burma, where he died in an airplane crash along with American airmen. He is buried in a collective grave with those dead Americans in Arlington National Cemetery. On that gravestone visiting Jews who know his story place stones.
In direct contradiction of its solemn undertakings as the Mandatary (holder of the Mandate) to “facilitate immigration” by Jews and to “encourage close settlement by Jews on the land,” the British government passed the infamous White Paper of 1939, which limited Jewish migration to Mandatory Palestine to 15,000 a year for five years, after which the Arabs would have a veto (and would, of course, end Jewish immigration altogether). Churchill, always a Zionist, thundered against this great betrayal, but to no avail.
Just before and during the early years of World War II, then, when Jews were in a state of mortal peril, and perhaps a million of them might have made it to Palestine, that possibility was cut off by the British, who blockaded ships carrying refugees from landing in Palestine. After the war, the British continued to blockade ships carrying survivors of the Nazi concentration camps. They famously turned back the Exodus in 1947, with nearly 4,500 Jewish survivors aboard, so that it sailed back to Hamburg, Germany, where the passengers were forcibly disembarked and kept in miserable DP camps in the British-occupied zone of Germany.
Let’s move forward to today. The British government, with Sir Keir Starmer at the helm of his listing ship of state, has declared that it will recognize a “state of Palestine” at the UN General Assembly on September 22. What the borders of that state will be, what will happen to the 700,000 Jews now living in Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem, whether this “state of Palestine” will be demilitarized or not, and who will govern that new state, are all matters that remain undiscussed. Perhaps these are matters that will solve themselves. After all, why would so many of us keep calling it a “two-state solution” if it weren’t a “solution”?

Another instance of British perfidy: the territory of the original Mandate included both Israel and modern-day Jordan. The British unilaterally created the Emirate of Transjordan in 1921 by giving 80% of the Mandate territory to Prince Abdullah (who was from Hejaz, and whose family never had any legitimate claims to any territory in the Mandate) after the Hashemites were expelled from Saudi Arabia when they lost the civil war against the House of Saud. The remaining territory (the portion “from the river to the sea”) was supposed to be reserved for a Jewish state, but the British reneged on that promise too in May 1948.

It is nonetheless true though, isn’t it, that Britain lived up to the requirements of the Mandate sufficiently to make the state of Israel possible? I don’t think the country would be there without them. They did oversee the influx of Jewish pioneers in the twenties and thirties. They changed their minds in 1939 after it took them three years to put down an Arab uprising against themselves, but that was largely because they could see that war was coming in Europe and decided it was a bad idea to be alienating the entire Arab world for the sake of a small Jewish enclave in Palestine.
The Mandate was established, as far as I know, because the British had themselves backed the Zionist design during the First World War. Terms from the Balfour Declaration were incorporated into the legal instrument establishing the Mandate. The League of Nations’ measure was a British measure.

Mr. Carey has it all wrong. Britain did not live up to the requirements of the League of Nations Mandate. (Please don’t call it the “British mandate.”) The Mandate was not “an English measure!” It was a treaty signed by many nations, and when the League of Nations ended, all the obligations of the League were assumed by its predecessor, the United Nations. The Mandate required them to bring a Jewish state into existence as soon as possible. This was a solemn obligation under a treaty which it signed to get control. (San Remo Agreement.) Instead Britain did everything it could to prevent a state, rather it used its trusteeship to treat the area as a colony for its own purposes. It is no excuse for Carey to point out it was in appeasement mode, this time appeasing Arabs rather than Hitler. Contra the letter, Britain did not help aliyah of the twenties and thirties. Just the opposite. It allowed free immigration by Arabs while obstructing Jewish immigration, Jewish attempts at self-protection and Jewish steps toward a country.

The next thing that should happen – the British commonwealth should be disbanded, and all member countries, particularly of the “Realm” (the countries that nominally have King Charles III as their monarch) should either become republics, or pick new kings/dynasties. Britain itself should split into England, Scotland and Wales, w/ each being free to make their own decisions. Northern Ireland can merge into the Republic of Ireland: incidentally, I saw on Wiki that Catholics are now the majority over Protestants there, just like in the Republic, so the one reason for being separate is no longer valid. Besides, I’m not sure that Dublin has a policy of persecuting Protestants, although I’m open to being corrected on this one

Orde Wingate was an extraordinary man.
Had he survived WWII, he would probably have ended his days in Israel as a general in the IDF!
I have sometimes wondered what would happen if the Israelis were to create something like the French ‘Foreign Legion’, call it “The Orde Wingate Brigade” and throw membership open to non-Islamic Gentiles of good will, sound in wind and limb, who wished to throw their lot in with the embattled Jewish state in its epic self-defence against the global Jihad. I think they’d get quite a few recruits…from all kinds of places.
