Swiss court rejects Tariq Ramadan’s rape conviction appeal; his lawyers are going to EU Court of Human Rights

At least one of Ramadan’s victims, according to AFP, is relieved:

Lawyers for the woman who brought the complaint, a Muslim convert identified only as “Brigitte,” hailed the Supreme Court decision.

“This marks the end of a long ordeal and a long legal battle for our client and her lawyers.”

But Ramadan just won’t give up.

In the Jihad Watch piece “‘Muslim Martin Luther’ Tariq Ramadan convicted of rape,” Robert Spencer wrote:

He was the darling of the leftist intelligentsia. They neither knew nor cared about what his Muslim Brotherhood connections demonstrated. And now he has shown that he takes the Qur’an’s permission to rape infidel women (see 4:3, 4:24, 23:1-6, 33:50 and 70:30) seriously, and no doubt all the rest of the Qur’an and Sunnah as well, even while he was being celebrated as the Great Moderate Hope.

So to Ramadan, he did nothing wrong. He was in his rights as a Sharia supremacist.

One of Tariq Ramadan’s victims, Henda Ayari, described his monstrous transformation as she was attacked:

He allowed himself gestures, attitudes and words that I could never have imagined.

And when I resisted, when I cried to him to stop, he insulted and humiliated me. He slapped me and attacked me. I saw in his crazy eyes that he was no longer master of himself. I was afraid he would kill me. I was completely lost. I started crying uncontrollably. He mocked me.

He choked me so hard that I thought I was going to die.

Now his lawyers are going to the European Court of Human Rights, of all places. That court is based on principles of human rights including the idea of equality for all, not on the Sharia, in which women are deemed inferior to men. How ironic and outrageous that Ramadan’s case is being taken there. And how momentous and revealing it would be if the European Court of Human Rights ruled in Ramadan’s favor, instead of protecting the real victims of human rights abuses such as those he has been convicted of committing.

Switzerland’s Supreme Court said on Thursday, August 28, that it had rejected an appeal by Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan against his rape conviction, but his lawyers said he would take the case to Europe’s rights court.

“The Federal Court dismissed Tariq Ramadan’s appeal against the conviction for rape and sexual coercion handed down by the Geneva Court of Justice,” the high court said in a statement.

Ramadan’s lawyers Yaël Hayat and Guerric Canonica said in a statement sent to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that “the defense takes note of the decision by the Federal Court and contests it.” They added that “the final word will belong to the European Court of Human Rights.”

After being acquitted in 2023, a Geneva appeals court last year found the 63-year-old former Oxford University professor “guilty of rape and sexual coercion” of a woman in a Geneva hotel 17 years ago. It sentenced him to three years in prison, two of which were suspended. The ruling marked the first guilty verdict against Ramadan, who faces a string of rape allegations in Switzerland and France. It was that verdict that the Supreme Court confirmed on Thursday.

‘Dismissed’

Switzerland’s Supreme Court announced on Thursday that it had back in July “dismissed Tariq Ramadan’s appeal against the conviction for rape and sexual coercion handed down by the Geneva Court of Justice.” The Supreme Court said the lower cantonal court verdict was “admissible,” concluding in the verdict that Ramadan’s appeal did “not demonstrate that the judgement appealed against is based on an arbitrary assessment of the evidence.…
