The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis, or CAMERA, has recently called to account the New York Times, which continues to insist — wrongly — that Israel has been steadily “blocking food aid” aid to Gaza. According to the first sentence on the front page of Saturday’s New York Times, Israel “has blocked most food and other aid from entering the Gaza Strip” during the war with Hamas.
The damning charge is repeated in a second Times story, published around the same time, which tells readers that “Israel has blocked most food and other aid from entering the enclave since the war began nearly two years ago,” on Oct. 7.
The statements, a clear message to readers that Israel has allowed only a trickle of food into Gaza, are categorical, sweeping, and definitive.
They are also false….
With OCHA explaining that its data after May 2024 is incomplete, we have to look elsewhere for a more up-to-date numbers. Fortunately, Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories has its own data portal that runs through August 2025. And per COGAT, 1.5 million tons of food aid has entered the Gaza Strip since the Oct. 7 massacre. That averages to 2,245 tons/day since the start of the war – significantly more than what entered prior to the war.
Between August 1, 2025 and August 22, the day the New York Times pieces were published, 3,886 tons of food per day crossed into Gaza.
Why did the New York Times reporters make no mention the current rate of 3,886 tons of food Gaza entering each day with the average of 2,445 tons that entered Gaza between October 7, 2023 and May 7, 2024, and also, even more tellingly, the 1,142 tons of food aid that entered Gaza before October 7, 2023. A moment’s research would have given the lie to the claim that Israel has “steadily blocked” food aid to Gaza.
It’s a simple case of journalistic malpractice. The New York Times in two recent front-page stories has claimed that the IDF has “blocked most aid” to Gaza. This directly contradicts the facts. Before the Gaza war began, from January to September 2023, an average of 2,285 truckloads of food per month entered the Strip, according OCHA. With an estimate of about 15 tons of food per truck, that amounts to 1,142 tons per day of food entering Gaza prior to the war.
During the war, according to COGAT, 1.5 million tons of food aid has entered the Gaza Strip since the Oct. 7 massacre. That averages to 2,245 tons per day since the start of the war – significantly more than what entered prior to the war, which was 1,142 tons of aid a day.
Finally, in the most recent period, from August 22 on, there has been another steep rise in the amount of food aid sent to Gaza by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: an average of 3,886 tons of food each day.
Will the New York Times have the decency to publish these figures, and to apologize for having concluded, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that Israel has been “blocking” aid to Gaza?

So far CAMERA has found the answer to this to be “no”. The New York Times is clearly convinced that the falsehoods they are reporting MUST be true because they are in support of the cause they back, which they see as unexceptionably just. And if the falsehoods are in any particular untrue, it doesn’t matter. Support for the good cause comes first.
