Five ministers and four state secretaries followed Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp out after his efforts to issue new sanctions against the Israeli leadership were blocked by other government members, Dutch media reported Friday.
After failing to garner support for his plans on Friday, he announced, “I’m going home now and I’m going to write my resignation letter,” according to De Telegraf.
“I felt resistance in the cabinet against more measures as a result of what is happening in Gaza City and the occupied West Bank at the moment,” he later said in a statement following his resignation.
Sources told De Telegraf that Veldkamp quit despite a compromise that would have seen an import ban on Israeli settlement goods.
That wasn’t harsh enough for Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp, nor for those who resigned lemming-like in sympathy with his position. Apparently he had been hoping for a much wider ban, one that would include certain goods produced in Israel within the Green Line. When he failed to get it, he resigned.
House of Representatives MP Eric van der Burg was reportedly “flabbergasted” by Veldkamp’s decision, according to Dutch media site NRC….

Ben-Gvir and Smotrich have defended Israeli “settlers” — as Jews in Judea and Samaria are pejoratively called — who have attacked Palestinians attempting to expand their own villages in Judea and Samaria, but that is not the same thing as “incitement.” They have called for expanding the Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria, the land which Caspar Veldkamp incorrectly describes as “illegal settlements,” ignoring 3500 years of Jewish history, and fails to recognize that all the territory “from the river to the sea” was included by the League of Nations in the Mandate for Palestine, and he ignores as well UN Security Council Resolution 242, according to which, as the Resolution’s author Lord Caradon explained, Israel was entitled to hold onto land won in the Six-Day War that it needed in order to have “secure and defensible borders.”
Veldkamp and the other ministers who resigned along with him wanted even harsher measures taken by the Dutch government against Israel in order to force the embattled Jewish state to yield to Hamas’ demand that the IDF withdraw completely from Gaza in order to obtain the release of the hostages. Let us hope that such a mass resignation by the leftist ministers leads to chaos, confusion, and infighting in their ranks. According to the latest polls, taken in July 2025, Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) is projected to be the largest party in the upcoming Dutch general election, scheduled for October 2025. If his party wins, we can expect both a renewal of Dutch support for Israel, and a much harder line on Muslim immigration. A consummation devoutly to be wished.

On a very much related matter and writing here more expansively, Victor Davis Hanson, arguably America’s greatest living historian and whose specialties are ancient Greece and military history, has observed that a unique aspect of Western Civilization, i.e., its capacity to criticize itself such as no other major civilization ever has, is a double edged sword. It does lead to so much progress, examples being the first civilization to realize that slavery is wrong and thereafter taking many measures to end it (contra the Islamic world I might add) and realizing that women have been oppressed in sundry ways and thereafter taking many measures to end it (again contra the Islamic world I might add), but often times, as VDH has noted, it has become an almost self-flagellation phenomenon, a kind of self-hate which is not only not productive but actually a civilizational menace.
Well, the modern West still has this “aspect” about itself to this day. And, I would argue, worse than ever, even to the extent of disregarding self-preservation. Time for a beer.

Today, I was watching something either on YouTube or @X – forgetting which – where a Dutch Jew was packing up his home and preparing to move to Israel for good. Pretty sad to see. I do hope that Netherlands can be salvaged by Wilders, even if the countries around it – France, Germany & Belgium fall.
