The immigrants, overwhelmingly Muslim, who manage to make it the countries of Western Europe call themselves “asylum seekers,” but in reality, they are economic migrants, drawn by all the benefits the welfare states of Europe lavish upon them. These include free or greatly subsidized housing, free medical care, free education, unemployment benefits even without a work history, family allowances, and other benefits. Those “other benefits” turn out to be absurd, scarcely believable. Councils in London are offering asylum seekers discounts on leisure activities including free gym sessions and workout classes.
This includes Richmond council, which allows “sanctuary seekers” in the borough to apply for free leisure card subscriptions, according to its website.
The “Richmond Card” gives them free access to gym sessions, group exercise classes and general swimming lessons in indoor pools across five leisure centres.
The Liberal Democrat-run council says it will accept a letter from the Home Office or an Asylum Application Registration Card as proof of eligibility for those who apply for the leisure card.
People on benefits and carers in the borough only receive a 60 per cent discount off gym and swimming sessions.
A working adult in Richmond can meanwhile be charged up to £52.50 a month to access the fitness suite, classes and swimming at all five leisure centres.
On the council website, it also states the Richmond Card can be used to get discounts on other activities including pilates sessions, French and Spanish lessons and hypnosis sessions to relieve anxiety and stress….
Do these benefits strike you as what asylum seekers deserve? Free gym memberships, free use of pools, free swimming lessons, free group exercise classes? Or what of the other benefits these asylum seekers can get through the Richmond Card, that provides them discounts on pilates sessions, French and Spanish lessons, and even hypnosis sessions “to relieve anxiety and stress,” which, given all the benefits they receive, one suspects would not appear to be a problem? The card also gives access to discounts on paddle boarding and kayaking, and can be used in some restaurants.
Birmingham City Council – which declared itself effectively bankrupt in 2023 – meanwhile offers asylum seekers discounts on activities including trampolining and martial arts sessions.
The Home Office revealed last week asylum seekers could lose their housing and support if they refuse to move out of hotels “without a valid reason”.
The new “Failure to Travel” policy is aimed at tackling “non-compliance by asylum seekers”.
It will mean those who are moved out of hotels to suitable alternative accommodation must take it.
This policy was made necessary because so many of the asylum seekers, who had originally been placed in expensive hotels, refused to leave when asked. But they still may remain, if they can present a “valid reason” for staying in such expensive quarters. Given the incredible indulgence of the refugee authorities, one suspects that the definition of a “valid reason” for staying in these hotels will be expansive.

At this point, I’m in favor of taking it out completely. The previous Trump administration got blocked by a Federal Appeals court when they tried modifying/removing it. DHS should take this up again and appeal that ruling to SCOTUS, and see what they say. That poem wasn’t in the original Statue of Liberty, and enough has changed b/w 1903 and now to justify removing it from the site

I do think too many Brits are still too oblivious about what’s clearly happening around them, particularly from muslims, and partly due to official censorship from Ofcom
That said, they do have horrible choices. All the parties that know or are committed to do anything about this issue are fringe parties – Britain First, UKIP, Reclaim. None of the mainstream parties – Labour, Tories, Lib-Dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru think it is a problem. Even Nigel Farage doesn’t get it, so Reform is very compromised as well
I do blame Brits who know of this issue but desist from voting for the fringe parties on the grounds that they “won’t win”. How will they, if all their potential voters have a defeatist attitude? My attitude throughout life has been to vote for the party I most agree w/, regardless of their chances. It’s then up to the rest of the voters whether or not they win

In financial terms this is an unworkable unsustainable situation. They went there for the freebies not to work. I would bet that many of them were criminally inclined in their countries of origin. Those countries are happy to get rid of them if another country is stupid enough to take them in. From the home country point of view it makes perfect sense to me. Compassion is a good thing but misplaced compassion is a very bad thing. Misplaced compassion is a destructive killer of well founded compassion.
Whoever thought this plan was a good thing needs to be institutionalized for the good of the country.

There are several petitions on Change.org against asylum seeker hotels in different places in the UK. The one thing to be said for them is that they potentially soften up the population in regard to other developments, e.g., given the choice between a wind farm that would spoil a beautiful view, and one of these hotels, most locals would choose the wind farm.
