A few months ago Zohran Mamdani told a sympathetic questioner at an anti-Tesla rally that it would be wrong for him to identify as a “black” or “African-American.” It would, he insisted, be “misleading.” Then, a week ago, someone hacked into the Columbia University system, and managed to retrieve Mamdani’s college application, on which he had checked a box for “Indian” and, at the same time, a box for “Black or African-American.” He’s since had some ‘splainin’ to do. He said, preposterously, that he had only been trying to convey fully who he was. Apparently his having been born in Uganda, a country he left when he was five years old, turned him into a black or African-American baby, a fascinating metamorphosis. …“I’m an Indian, Ugandan, New Yorker,” Mamdani told black performance artist Crackhead Barney when she approached him on the street in April.
Asked if he would claim African American status, the socialist insisted: “No I would not.”
“I’m proud to be Ugandan but I think that is misleading,” he said.
The clip resurfaced and started spreading on social media soon after the New York Times reported on Thursday that he’d checked both “Asian” and “Black or African American” on his application to the Ivy League university when he was a high school senior in 2009….
“Most college applications don’t have a box for Indian-Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background,” the lawmaker said as he defended the move.
He noted that he specified “Ugandan” in a section of the application that allowed for more detailed personal information….
That “more detailed personal information” he added was one word — “Ugandan.” That word was intended to emphasize his nonexistent African identity, to suggest to admissions officers that he was indeed “Black or African-American.” He could easily have enlightened the Columbia admissions officers by simply stating on his application, in the essay section of the application, that “I was born in Uganda of Indian parents.” He chose not to.
“Even though these boxes are constraining, I wanted my college application to reflect who I was,” he said.
But he isn’t, and never was, either black or African-American. His college application did not reflect “who I [Zohrab Mamdani] was.” That application was meant, instead, to lie about him so as to take cynical advantage of the affirmative action policy then in force at American universities.
Mamdani insisted he didn’t select the two races to gain an edge in the admissions process — but because of the limited options available on the college application.
No, of course not. How dumb does he think New Yorkers are? Mamdani was just trying to be helpful, he claims, to the admissions committee, giving a “complete” picture of himself. But what he added, by checking the box “Black or African-American,” would of course mislead that committee. He added, as “personal information” that might be helpful to the committee, the single word “Ugandan.” A country he left when he was five years old. An accident of birth that he exploited to reinforce the notion that he was not only “Asian,” but also “Black or African-American.” He was hoping it would give him as a candidate a leg — a very long leg — up.
It had nothing to do with enlightening admissions officers as to who he “really was,” but to deceive them into considering him to be in the category of candidates — “black or African-American” — for whom affirmative action was made. Even with that boost, and even with his father being a professor at Columbia, he was apparently so undistinguished a student that Columbia turned him down. A less selective university, Bowdoin, however, did fall for his affirmative action ploy, and admitted him. He majored in Africana Studies, and graduated without honors. He did make time, however, while on campus to start a campus branch of Students for Justice in Palestine. After college, he spent a decade doing a little of this and a little of that, but mainly worked as a hip-hop musician and a housing counsellor. And then he discovered politics, and began his resistible rise by being elected to the New York State Assembly, with a salary of $142,500. A lot better than what he took in as a hip-hop musician and housing counsellor. And despite that elevated salary, he continued to live in a rent-stabilized apartment. He knows how to play the system.
Which part of Mamani’s lying most offends? Is it his Lie No. 1, that is, on his college admissions application, his checking the box “Black or African-American” when he was neither? Is it his Lie No. 2, when running for New York State Assembly, he assured voters at a rally that he would never claim to be “black,” for that would only “mislead” people? Or was it his Lie No. 3, his later attempt to explain away his checking “Black or African-American” on his Columbia application — which application he was mortified to find had been made public by a civic-minded hacker — as having no motive other than his innocent desire to provide a fuller picture of “who I am”?
Zohran, Zohran. What a tangled web… you know the rest. You are someone who will lie about your race and ethnicity so as to take advantage of a program meant to help others — that is, real “Black or African-American” candidates. What cheek. What chutzpah. And then you readily lie to voters as to why you lied the first time. You might have said something different. You might have admitted that you misled the admissions officers at all the places you applied, not just Columbia — by checking that box clearly stating that you were “Black or African-American,” and you now regret “misleading” (your political advisers will tell you to avoid the word “lie” precisely because it fits) others in order to improve your chances of admission. Who knows? There might be some people who will believe you. After all, many people believed the other lies you told when running in the primary. Why should they stop believing you now?

I know that in this country, we have a process of voluntary naturalization, where we embrace, along w/ US citizenship, its history, its constitution and its culture as a part of our own. A lot of people from all parts of the world have successfully done it
That said, some people just can’t do it. Just like a baby being born in a stable doesn’t become a horse, similarly a muslim born in a non-muslim country doesn’t automatically become a native of that country. Many Ugandans reject the idea that Indian settlers there became Ugandans, no matter what they did for that country: they wouldn’t embrace Mamdani any more.
