The Water Crisis in Iran Will Not Go Away

According to the World Resources Institute, Iran ranks as the 14th-highest country globally for baseline water stress, with commentators increasingly discussing a potential “day zero” when water supplies could be completely exhausted.

If that “day zero” arrives, what could Iranians then do? Flee their country by the tens of millions ? But none of their Sunni Arab neighbors would take those Shi’a in, and the Europeans have by now appear to be coming to the conclusion that they have had their fill of Muslim immigrants. The Iranians will likely have to pay a fortune for a steady supply of water from such water-rich states as Brazil, Russia, and Canada. In a future Iran, water may cost more than oil.

Academic researcher Reza Talebi has noted that Iran’s aggressive expansion of dam construction has worsened the country’s water crisis instead of alleviating it. Between 2012 and 2018, the number of dams in Iran more than doubled, from 316 to 647, according to Talebi, and many were erected without proper environmental evaluations and often driven by political or military agendas.

The public needs to learn the gravity of the problem, and to be willing to support government expenditures on capital improvements — replacements, that is, of the thousands of miles of pipelines that leak water, and on systems of water-saving drip irrigation, that will also require a capital investment in the proper equipment to deliver the water to individual plants, drip-by-drip. It means understanding the reason for, and having a willingness to put up with, temporary shutoffs of water from tens of millions of taps.

Iran’s nuclear facilities, including those sites where thousands of uranium-enriching centrifuges, are constantly at work, use huge amounts of water to cool down their contents. But it is the larger picture that matters — the hideous misuse of so much money to build weapons of war that, even if successful, would not make a single Iranian better off. A nuclear attack on Israel would of course lead to a much deadlier attack, with many more nuclear weapons, in response. What is the gain for Iranians in that?

The Islamic Republic has spent a minimum of $50 billion on its nuclear program. Much of that program has now been destroyed by Israel and the United States. But even if it were intact, even if it were too succeed, and Iran were to have a few nuclear bombs in its arsenal, how would that improve the lives of Iranians? It would not. And if Tehran were to drop a bomb on Israel, thus triggering a much more devastating response by the Israelis, with a dozen nuclear bombs dropped from Bandar Abbas to Mashhad, how would that improve things for Iranians?

This water crisis will not go away, and will likely only get worse, year by year. Iranians will need to use more water to irrigate their crops, and to increase the production of energy — while the hydroelectric dams shut down for want of water. The Iranians should think carefully about what, if they could only drop their insensate hatred for the Jewish state, could be done in collaboration with Israel. The Israelis are the world leaders in drip irrigation that is aimed precisely at each plant, delivered in just the right amount, and at just the right time of day, to save on water. Israel is a world leader, too, in desalination, and could share that expertise with Iran. Israeli scientists have developed a device, WaterGen, that can turn the ambient air into water. Israel is also a leader in solar energy, which Iran should be using much more of to replace its many hydroelectric dams that are literally drying up, no longer able to function.

“To govern is to choose” is the famous aphorism of French Prime Minister Pierre Mendès-Frances. Were Iran to choose to collaborate with, instead of vowing to destroy, Israel, and use the money it now spends on its nuclear program to instead improve its water management, the benefits would be immediate. The government could replace the aging, leaky pipes that waste so much water, could install drip irrigation networks throughout its farms, build desalination plants, and invest in vast solar arrays that could provide energy needed to replace what the hydroelectric dams can no longer supply.

Since those fanatical Muslims who have been ruling Iran for 46 years would never agree to such a sensible outcome, the Iranians will just have to wait until the despotic regime that torments them, and wastes so much of the nation’s money on its nuclear program, is finally overturned. The overthrow of noxious regimes has occurred in numerous countries. Why not, at long last, in Iran?

  3. All of the money that Iran has spent on uranium enrichment, weapons for terrorists, etc., could have been spent on massive desalinization plants.

    • Or even on the nuclear front, they could have built nuclear power plants compatible w/ IAEA regulations that just supply electricity, but nothing else – no nuclear warheads or anything. Then they could stop drilling for oil, which too has its own environmental impact (not its burning, but just routing it)

        But apparantly, it seems to me that Iran is still not making a certain “someone” happy, to have “whichever, hint, hint” country(s) point their weather weapons on them…..right?
        That might be right, but I’d rather not even think about that, it’s the possible retaliation that keeps me awake at night!

        • Iran has always been pretty dry. It is not dry because Israel or the US or whoever you mean does not like them.

  4. How can an intelligent Iranian look at this situation and declare his government is being blessed by Allah? The best of peoples becoming dependent on Israel for water technology and more efficient crop growth methods? How merciful. That is either an Allah failure or Allah is sending a clear signal that Allah does not support the Iranian Regime’s notion of eliminating Usrael..

    Those old Mullahs who study and preach about Muhammad and Allah have no solutions – they might as well be turning gears that drive nothing. They took the educated youth and killed them off in the 8-years war and used what was left for war technology. They squandered the citizen’s wealth to make war machines and hire terrorists. Now it’s survival against nature coming for the Regime and maybe time to dissuade an angry Allah by producing for the people’s actual needs.

  11. As always governments spend the money and resources on weapons instead of infrastructure. This is true all over the world. Iran could have avoided this with a little forward thinking and investment in their own peoples health and safety. But as usual power and greed come first.
