Several violent incidents were reported across India during Muharram processions held last Sunday, with particular concern over targeted attacks on Hindus and the increasing use of political symbols. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is primarily observed by Shia Muslims to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680. They engage in dramatic reenactments, recitations of elegies, self-flagellation, and public displays of weapons, such as swords, knives, and daggers.
A particularly shocking incident took place in Bihar’s East Champaran district, where 22-year-old Ajay Yadav, a Hindu youth, lost his life to Islamic barbarity on Sunday, July 6. The incident occurred on the outskirts of Kothia Bazaar in Motihari during a Muharram procession that was being carried out at night.
According to reports, a group of Muslim participants performing traditional stunts with swords and sticks got into a heated exchange with Ajay and his companions, reportedly over the public display of weapons. The argument quickly escalated, and members of the procession attacked the group. Ajay was struck in the neck with a sword and died instantly. Though rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. His cousin, Nawal Kishore Yadav, and another relative were also seriously injured, and were later referred to a medical college in Muzaffarpur for treatment.
Twelve suspects have been detained so far in connection with the attack. Authorities have deployed additional police forces in the area to prevent further escalation, and to monitor online activity to deter the spread of rumors. East Champaran Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat claimed that the incident may have stemmed from a preexisting feud unrelated to the Muharram event. However, many similar cases of violence linked to Muharram processions were reported from multiple districts in the state, including Katihar, Hajipur, Bhagalpur, and Gopalganj.
In Katihar, violent clashes broke out during the procession, leaving over 20 individuals injured, including several police officers. Several vehicles and public property were also damaged. In Hajipur, tensions escalated when sharp weapons were displayed during the march. A disagreement over the display soon turned into large-scale stone-throwing by procession participants.
Gopalganj also witnessed a violent clash between residents of two villages during a tazia procession, that is, a procession of representations of the tombs of Muhammad’s grandsons Hasan and Hussain. Muslims hurled stones, which injured many people and prompted the deployment of riot control police. Similar cases of unrest were also reported from Bhagalpur, where authorities had to intervene quickly to prevent further worsening of the situation.
Muharram-related violence was reported in several districts in Madhya Pradesh as well. In Ujjain, a procession was diverted into a restricted zone, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement. Participants broke through barricades, and police responded with baton charges. At least five officers were injured, and 16 individuals, including the procession’s leader, were arrested.
Meanwhile, in Shajapur, a dispute between two factions of the Muslim community over who would perform ritual rounds of the procession arena (called “akhara”) turned violent. Police intervened, curtailed the procession by three hours, and deployed additional forces to maintain peace.
In Jharkhand’s Palamu district, a Muharram procession turned violent in Pahley Kalan village after a tractor accidentally entered the procession route. The frenzied mob immediately began throwing stones, leaving three people injured, two of whom were hospitalized. Authorities detained six suspects and imposed prohibitory orders. Drone and CCTV footage are being reviewed to assist in the investigation.
Violence aside, this year’s Muharram processions also aroused concern due to overt political messaging. In many parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, tazia participants waved Palestinian and Iranian flags, leading to heightened tensions. In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, clashes erupted when police removed posters of the Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Officials had issued strict guidelines in advance of Muharram, prohibiting the display of foreign flags and provocative slogans. Arrests were made for waving the Palestinian flag during Muharram gatherings. Using these religious occasions to propagate Palestinian propaganda was widely criticized across social media and news outlets.
From fatal attacks in Bihar to police clashes in Madhya Pradesh and symbolic provocations in Uttar Pradesh, Muharram processions underscored the urgent need for more effective oversight and apolitical observance of such traditions. While weapons were carried openly, crowds turned aggressive, and confrontations with both civilians and law enforcement broke out. Despite the risks associated with such displays, administrative authorities have largely failed to impose effective control, and no activist groups have had the courage to criticize these violent and provocative displays.

In India, there are a lot of Hindus who are under the misconception that b’cos they are outnumbered by sunnis, that shi’a muslims are more tolerant than sunnis. These acts of violence should disabuse them of that notion
Also, aside from Iran, India is probably the only country that has holidays for shi’a occasions like Ashura/Muharram, aside from Iran: not sure about countries like Iraq, Azerbaijan, Bahrein and Yemen. This government is pretty worthless, but if ever India gets a real Hindu government, they should just abolish the public observances of holidays on all the Eids, Ramadan and Muharram. Best that muslims should be able to hope for is take the day off, if their employers are willing

I can never figure Indians out. In America the Hindus say the Muslims are the victims, the Hindus are attacking.
Met a few girls of a supposed prominent family, an old family of some kind of artists. Their family intimately knows some prominent woman politician in east India, they showed me pictures. They’re Hindus. And they all say Muslims and Hindus are one, and the tension is by radical Hindus .
Met Hindus in Denver as well, and it’s the same story. They seem to support Muslims side somehow.
What am I missing with this all?
