A man suspected of setting fire to an Australian synagogue as worshipers ate dinner inside has been arrested and charged, police said Sunday, as they investigated if the attack was terror related.
Angelo Loras, 34, from the Sydney suburb of Toongabbie, is suspected of setting ablaze the front door of the busy East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation synagogue on Friday night while around 20 people were inside for a Shabbat meal.
Victoria state police charged Loras with a string of offenses, including reckless conduct endangering life. He was not named in connection with two other attacks against the Jewish community that took place around the same time.
“The man allegedly poured a flammable liquid on the front door of the building and set it on fire before fleeing the scene,” police said in a statement. “Detectives will continue to examine the intent and ideology of the person charged to determine if the incident is in fact terrorism.”
The worshipers escaped unscathed through the back of the synagogue before firefighters doused the blaze.
Loras appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court and was ordered held in custody until a July 22 hearing. He did not apply for bail.
Loras describes himself on the social media platform X as “Single, Iranian, forklift driver, music lover.”
The attack was the latest of a rash of incidents to target Jews in Melbourne and Sydney, much of it thought tied to anger over Israel’s actions in the Middle East, with Australian leaders vowing to crack down on perpetrators….

Not much, gravenimage. In response to a year of vicious anti Jewish action from Muslims and their left wing mates, I did notice a tv ad type thing calling for an end to the hate, but, of course, it also included a call to end islamophobia. I suppose mosques have probably been receiving threats, but it has been Jewish people who have terrorised. It seemed to be usual politically correct nonsense. Compared to the peace we used to have, the past year or so has been a shocker.

There are not many synagogues. There are so few that it would be perfectly possible and surely not all that expensive to station undercover cops next to each one, every Sabbath; ready to grab any suspicious loiterers and arrest any ‘protesters’ (i.e wannabe pogromists) who crossed a predetermined perimeter (which would include the carpark and pedestrian approaches; those attending the synagogue should NOT have to ‘run the gauntlet’ of a masked mob of shrieking thugs spewing vicious garbage).
Perhaps, too, the community security groups could research the legalities of ‘citizen’s arrest’. And have well-trained people anywhere that is likely to be targeted.
Imagine if the thugs – whether Muslim or non-Muslim Jew-hating jihad groupies – who barged into that israeli restaurant in Melbourne had run up against half a dozen Krav Maga practitioners, who could have overpowered them in short order, and tied them to chairs.. citizen’s arrest!! – and then rung the cops to come and collect?? If i post a “mean” statement on line about Islam or open borders will the authorities send a swat team to my house (in many of these western countries outside of first amendment protected America) at 6am to question me ,my family ,dox me over what I said ,could I face fines or arrest over “hate speech”?
