Pakistani parliamentarians flaunt their obsession with jihad against India; MP calls for elimination of unbelievers

A member of Pakistan’s National Assembly has declared during a parliamentary session that the Kalima, the Islamic declaration of faith, is more powerful than an atomic bomb. MP Mujahid Ali further linked these religious beliefs to the notion of Ghazwa-e-Hind, a prophesied jihad conquest of India, and openly called for the elimination of Jews. The remarks were met with applause by several lawmakers present in the session.

The statement, which was delivered during a televised address in parliament, has raised serious concerns about rising jihad sentiment within Pakistan’s political discourse. Apart from hatred of Hindus, Ali’s speech also included blatant anti-Semitic remarks. He alleged that Jews were responsible for much of the world’s conflict and suffering, and called for their total elimination, a language eerily reminiscent of genocidal ideologies from the 20th century. According to reports, the MP proclaimed, “The Kalima is more powerful than the atom bomb. It is our spiritual weapon. Ghazwa-e-Hind is destined. We will wage the final battle with India and ensure the end of the Jews, the greatest enemies of Islam.” This speech, delivered on June 18, was not only incendiary, but deeply disturbing, and has prompted renewed debate about the role of pro-jihad speech in Pakistani politics and its impact on regional peace.

Ghazwa-e-Hind refers to certain Islamic Hadiths which, according to many Muslims, predict a final holy war in which Muslims will conquer the Indian subcontinent. The idea has been embraced by several jihad groups across Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other Islamic regions, and used as an ideological justification for hatred against India and the Hindus. This phrase is often invoked by jihadi organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed to fuel anti-India propaganda.

Observers noted that several members of parliament clapped and nodded in support as the speech progressed, and there has been no official condemnation or distancing from Pakistan’s ruling party or opposition members. Such statements from elected officials pose a serious threat to regional stability, and a lack of backlash or accountability within Pakistan only deepens concerns about institutional tolerance of jihad violence and aggression.

While Pakistan has long been criticized for harboring jihad ideologies within parts of its military and political establishments, this open endorsement of Islamic war and genocide on the floor of its National Assembly has triggered widespread concern. This is not the first time Pakistan’s parliamentarians have openly furthered jihadist propaganda.

Speaking the language of terrorists, Punjab’s Information Minister, Fayaz-ul-Hasan Chohan, described Hindus as “cow urine drinkers,” and urged Pakistani Muslims to prepare for jihad following the Pulwama attack. His comments stirred widespread criticism abroad, but were reportedly met with support by members inside the assembly.

Even as Pakistan’s then-Prime Minister Imran Khan tried preaching peace in 2019 and talking about de-escalation with India after the attack, his minister, Ali Muhammad Khan, had gone on record invoking Muhammad bin Qasim and Mahmood of Ghazni on India and calling for Ghazwa-e-Hind. Like Mujahid Ali, Khan also stated that Muslims must prepare for this “promised” battle against India, and foreshadowed Mujahid Ali’s claim that the Kalima was more powerful than an atomic bomb.

Again, in August 2019, reacting to India’s abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed declared during a televised speech that “No bells will ring in Indian temples,” and encouraged Muslims to wage jihad. His speech was applauded by several lawmakers.

The state-sponsored hate is not limited to the Hindus, but extends to the “wrong kind of Muslims,” too, in Pakistan. PML-N leader Captain Muhammad Safdar, also the son-in-law of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, delivered a hate-filled speech targeting the Ahmadiyya community in October 2017. He labeled Ahmadis as enemies of the state and demanded their exclusion from public service. The assembly responded with applause.

The Pakistani MP’s recent statement equating an Islamic phrase with a nuclear weapon, invoking Ghazwa-e-Hind, and calling for the genocide of non-Muslims, illustrates growing jihad sentiment within the country’s political discourse.

In Pakistan, instead of upholding democratic and pluralistic values, lawmakers have used the assembly floor to invoke concepts like Ghazwa-e-Hind, glorify violent jihad, and vilify religious minorities and non-Muslims across borders. These speeches, frequently met with applause in the house and by many Muslims worldwide, reflect a disturbing normalization of jihadist thought within Pakistan’s political mainstream. The absence of institutional censure or cross-party condemnation suggests that such rhetoric is not an aberration, but rather part of a deeper political culture. As long as such speech is legitimized in parliament or by parliamentarians, jihadist narratives will continue to thrive and impact harmony and peace globally.
