Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing a corruption trial on three charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. The corruption charges have caused a political crisis that sent Israelis to the polls five times in less than four years.
The case has dragged on for years, while Netanyahu says he’s being politically targeted. From Trump’s point of view, Trump can personally identify, given the obscene witch hunt Democrats launched against him personally that saw him nearly end up in prison. Adding in the strain on Netanyahu since October 7 and his vigorous determination to stand up against Israel’s worst enemies, Trump’s support of Netanyahu doesn’t get stronger than this:
Trump is now calling for the corruption trial to be “cancelled immediately or for giving him a pardon.” As usual, some in the left media are trying to make Trump’s defense of Netanyahu contradictory, given Trump’s rebuke of Israel over the ceasefire, but the two situations are completely different, as should be obvious.
Netanyahu’s reply to Trump was to thank him “for your moving support for me and your tremendous support for Israel.”

Why it matters: Trump’s comments in a post on his Truth Social account were an unprecedented intervention by a U.S. president in a legal proceeding in another democratic ally.
It isn’t clear what prompted Trump’s post. The president has rarely spoke publicly about Netanyahu’s trial in the past and only yesterday he was visibly frustrated with the Israeli prime minister over the ceasefire with Iran.
Driving the news: Netanyahu is standing trial for three charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.He has been accused of receiving more than $200,000 worth of gifts from businessmen and for giving regulatory benefits worth hundreds of millions of dollars to a telecommunications tycoon in return for favorable press coverage on a website that was owned by the same businessman.
Netanyahu’s trial has been going on for four years, partially because the prime minister has been employing numerous legal delay tactics. The former head of the Israeli Shin Bet claimed Netanyahu tried to use his executive powers to delay his trial.
What he’s saying: Trump wrote that he was “shocked to hear” that even after the war with Iran, the State of Israel “is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt” against Netanyahu….

That is nice. I was a tad peeved at the president for ranting against Israel just so that he could look fair to both Israel and Iran. It’s nice to see him lend some foreign support to the Israeli prime minister who’s the punching bag of the debauched leaders of the EU like Macron and Starmer, even if he has no locus standi within Israel itself
