James Carville — It’s His Antisemitism, Stupid!

James Carville is the “ragin’ Cajun” who helped Bill Clinton win the presidency in 1992. Recently he has been launching pearls of political wisdom into the ether with his podcast, “Politics War Room.”And just now he has accused “rich Jews” of using the campus demonstrators as an excuse to support Republicans. James Carville, a prominent political commentator and campaign strategist for the Democratic Party, this week accused “wealthy Jewish” donors of using campus antisemitism as an excuse not to give money to Democrats, claiming what they really want are a “f—king tax cut” from Republicans.

On his “Politics War Room” podcast, Carville told co-host Al Hunt that some wealthy Jewish donors are citing examples of antisemitism on university campuses amid the Gaza war as reasons to stop donating to the Democratic Party.

“I hear this all the time. You’ve got to try and raise money from really wealthy Jewish fundraisers. And they say, look, James, I’m a Democrat, but I can’t be a part of a party because of what happened at Columbia [University in New York City],” Carville said.

Columbia has become a hotbed of pro-Hamas activism since the Palestinian terrorist group’s Oct. 7, 2023, massacre across southern Israel.

“What the f—k did the Democrats have to do with what happened in Columbia, by the way?” Carville continued. “But you know, because they have some students at Columbia generally made an ass of themselves, well, I can’t do that, but I can be for a party that everybody endorses the Alternative for Deutschland (referring to the far-right AfD party in Germany).”

It’s hard to know what Carville means here. Is it that the Republicans in the US are like the Alternative für Deutschland in Germany, and Carville wants us to believe that the AfD is politically beyond the pale for its anti-immigrant platform?

It’s not what the Democrats had to do with the explosion of antisemitism on campuses that has made Jewish donors unwilling any longer to support the party. It’s the undeniable fact that the left-wing of the Democratic party is openly anti-Israel, and tries repeatedly in Congress to pass resolutions to cut aid to Israel, or to put an embargo on offensive weapons, arms, or in other ways make things more difficult for the embattled Jewish state as it fights its seven-front war. Why should these donors want to help the Democratic party when so many of its members are ready to set Israel adrift?

According to the foul-mouthed Carville, Jewish donors care only about money. Their support for Republicans is apparently motivated only by a desire to see the tax cuts provided in the Republicans’ “big beautiful bill” come to pass. But they disguise their venality by claiming they can’t support the Democrats because that party has in its ranks a vocal group of so-called “progressives” who share a deep anti-Israel animus and would like to diminish American support for the Jewish support. These include 17 Democratic Senators, among them Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Chris Murphy, and Chris Van Hollen, who have voted for a partial arms embargo on Israel, and such virulently anti-Israel members of the House as those who are members of the far-left “Squad,” including such people as Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Andre Carson and — until their recent primary defeats — Cori Bush and Jamal Bowman.

According to Carville, all that anti-Israel animus and outright antisemitism that is sweeping the nation apparently is of little concern to wealthy Jewish donors. Really, Mr. Carville? Where is your evidence that these wealthy Jews care more about their bank accounts than about antisemitism? These donors, by the way, are perfectly willing to support pro-Israel Democrats, such as Senator John Fetterman and Congressman Ritchie Torres, whose views on taxes may differ from their own, but these Jewish donors are keenly appreciative of their unswerving support for Israel.

Carville is both semi-coherent and foul-mouthed (“those f**king Jews” want “their f**king tax cut.”) But what I think he is attempting to express in this sentence is the notion that most Jews, the non-wealthy ones, understand the real motivations of those other Jews, the rich ones, who are supporting Republicans not because Republicans are solidly pro-Israel, while Democrats are becoming ever less supportive of the Jewish state, but only because of the tax cuts in the new budget bill.

The theme of “Jews and money,” of rich Jews who care only about money but pretend to care about antisemitism — that is the rancid message this bullet-headed blowhard has just delivered to the world.

This is not the first time that Carville’s comments have angered many within the Jewish community. In August 2024, Carville drew outrage after he said that the American supports Israel over Palestinians because they are “whiter.” Roughly half of Israeli Jews are Mizrahi — Jews who can trace their ethnic origins to the Middle East and North Africa….

Really? Is that why Americans support Israel? According to Carville, it is “racism” — Israeli Jews are”whiter” than the Palestinians — and Americans, being “racist,” support the Israelis for that reason. And since “racism” is a Bad Thing, American support for Israel, which is on “racist” grounds must also be a Bad Thing. Carville may not know it, but half of Israel’s Jewish population consists of Mizrahi Jews, Jews from Arab lands who are just as dark-skinned as most Arabs. Nearly two hundred thousand Jews from Ethiopia — the Falasha — are even darker-skinned than the Arabs. So unsympathetic is Carville to Israel, that he cannot fathom Americans supporting Israel for any reason other than a “racist” one.

Here are the real reasons for that support: sympathy for the tiny Jewish state which has had to fight for its very survival in three wars (1948, 1967, 1973) and also had to wage endless campaigns against the various terror groups — the PLO, Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad — whose members have killed thousands of Israeli civilians; identification with a fellow democracy, one whose people share Americans’ Judeo-Christian heritage and values; admiration for how the Israelis “made the desert bloom”— a claim that is mocked by some, but that is exactly what happened — with modern advances in agriculture, such as drip irrigation and plant genetics; amazement at how the Israelis managed in a few decades to build a modern economy, with their tiny state now a recognized leader in high tech; building a military that is now ranked the 15th most powerful in the world. These are some of the reasons why so many Americans support Israel, despite people such as James Carville, who are clearly irked by Israel’s economic, political, and military success, and the continued support given to it by the people of America.

Is Carville an antisemite? Don’t bother asking. You know the answer to that.
