Iranian crypto exchange Nobitex loses over $100,000,000 to Israeli-linked hacker group

The Israeli-linked hacker group known as Predatory Sparrow often goes by its Farsi name, Gonjeshke Darande. The group posted this on X:

Israel is launching multiple cyber attacks on Iran, causing the Islamic regime to desperately impose a nationwide Internet and telephone blackout.

Iran’s project director with the Washington-based think tank Crisis Group, Ali Vaez, said a possible reason for the blackout was worry that Israel “could either tap into sensitive information or paralyse some of the critical infrastructure.”

As the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities get pounded and global discussion continues about regime change, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has said: “Israel’s main goal is the elimination of Tehran’s nuclear and missile programs — regime change is for the Iranian people to decide.”

Iran’s crypto exchange market lost $100 million in assets to hackers, triggering a near nationwide internet blackout as the Islamic Republic’s fight with Israel escalates.

The blackouts have carried on into Thursday after the state limited internet access to the public over the cyberattack on Nobitex, Tehran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, according to Iran’s ministry of Communications.

The pro-Israeli “Predatory Sparrow” hacker group claimed responsibility for the attack, accusing Nobitex of helping Tehran evade Western sanctions and transferring money to Iran’s nuclear program.

“ASSETS LEFT IN NOBITEX ARE NOW ENTIRELY OUT IN THE OPEN,” the group touted on Telegram….

  1. Iran already has a nationwide internet blackout, courtesy the regime. Which is why Musk announced that Starlink would be made freely available so that Iranians could get internet access while figuring things out in the middle of a war. How does the exposure of Nobitex assets affect their internet connections – that’s something the regime has already done

    I’m just wondering how the assets are “left out in the open”? What’s to prevent the management from issuing new cryptographic keys to re-secure them, assuming that the assets haven’t already been pilfered? It would seem that if the Israelis did manage to break into them, that they would have been better off just looting them into a fund that could later be re-purposed, either restored to a future Iranian government, or for Israel, used to help underwrite the war
