A Sydney Islamic cleric being sued in the federal court for alleged racial discrimination of Jewish people has described his case as an existential battle “between Islam and unbelievers”.
Wissam Haddad, also known as Abu Ousayd, is being sued by Australia’s peak Jewish body over a series of lectures he gave in November 2023, in which he is alleged to have maligned Jewish people as “vile”, “treacherous” and cowardly.
The lectures quoted ayat and hadith from the Qur’an about Jews in Medina in the 7th century and, the federal court claim alleges, made derogatory generalisations about Jewish people, including that they are “wicked and scheming” and “love wealth”.
The claim, brought by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, alleges Haddad breached section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act – prohibiting offensive behaviour based on race or ethnic origin – during the sermons delivered at the Al Madina Dawah Centre (AMDC) in Bankstown in November 2023, speeches subsequently broadcast online.
But, Haddad’s defence case argues, his sermons were delivered in “good faith” as religious and historical instruction. If his sermons are found to breach 18C, then, he argues, the law is unconstitutional because it restricts the free exercise of religion.
On Tuesday morning, the long-running dispute, which failed to find resolution at conciliation, comes before Justice Angus Stewart in the federal court, in a case set to test the limits of religious expression and hate speech under Australian law.
The court is likely to be asked to adjudicate whether Haddad’s sermons, in which he quotes the Qur’an and offers interpretation of it, amount to incitement or are protected religious expression.
Ahead of the trial, Haddad, argued on Instagram that the case was existential for the practice of Islam in Australia.
“What I am currently facing in the federal court is not an issue of Abu Ousayd or Al Madina Dawah Centre versus the Jewish lobby … rather, it’s a battle between Islam and kuffar,” he said, using an Arabic word, usually translated as “unbelievers”.
He said the claim against him sought to criminalise Islamic scripture.
“They wish to take and make those ayat and hadith and historic accounts that speak about the Jews: to what they see as insulting, they seek to make it criminal.”
Ayat are verses in the Qur’an, the Islamic holy book, while hadith are reports attributed to the Prophet Muhammad….

I don’t know Australian law, but one thing I’m not getting: how does his above statement in any way contradict what he’s being accused of and being sued over – being an antisemite? If he considers his case a battle b/w islam and kuffar (which includes the Jooooooooooos), then he’s just making the case for the prosecution that he is indeed an antisemite

If the court sides with this Muslim, who rightly claims his words are a free expression of his ‘ religion’, a religion that says kill anyone who leaves it or insults it or its alleged founder, there will eventually be a civil war. Contrarily, if the court sides with the Jews, it might determine that Islam is a political system masquerading as a religion, and free expression of its content are not protected speech.

Yes James, it is on trial. His statements are clearly “hate speech” and he should have been charged a long time ago. So it is clear that the Koran includes hate speech which means the book should be banned. How can such hate speech be tolerated on the Internet? This case is HUGE and the implications are immense. I am a local so I can readily follow the proceedings, but the case deserves international attention due to the possibilities.

This is a really interesting case. If he is found not guilty the hate speech laws are null & void. If he is found guilty then the Quran is found to be against the hate speech law.

Easy case. Just deport him to the Muslim country he came from and his battle will be over. He will not have to tolerate infidels anymore and be at peace. Deport him as fast as Greta Thunberg was deported.
The problem is Australia seems to have left their Christian heritage and thereafter acquired moral relativism and lost the wisdom not to import the destructive, satanic, antichrist religion of Islam and its believers called Muslims. When you let go of Christ you also let go of wisdom, common sense and lose his hand of safeguarding your country which will eventually give a tragic outcome (Ezekiel 7:24). You even get blinded to voting for the very people who facilitate, import, and accommodate the illegal Muslim invasion, and the buildup of a Trojan horse Muslim minority. Then the citizens embrace Marxism, become their own god, and become a left-wing majority. The vicious cycle repeats with the sheeple again voting for candidates who facilitate, import, and accommodate the illegal Muslim invasion, the buildup of a Trojan horse Muslim minority, satan worship even in your streets, and eventually destruction of the host-country and its citizens.
I think if you ask the generation that were born around 1950, they would tell you the difference is like day and night. Before society turned woke and before the illegal Muslim invasion and after it turned woke and the import of the illegal Muslim migration.
