Two Palestinian men with visas were detained at the San Francisco International airport, denied entry into the country and put on a plane back to Jordan. No one knows why this happened, and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is not giving any details.
Human beings are excellent at coming up with ad hoc explanations for things, and in this case, San Francisco City Supervisor Bilal Mahmood believes that Trump did it:
This is yet another example of an escalating constitutional crisis in our country. If people coming to our country with valid visas are turned away, what does this mean for the rest of our country?
It is not clear what Bilal Mahmood has to do with this matter, but it may have to do with the fact that the district he represents includes the San Francisco version of Skid Row, otherwise known as the Tenderloin, which has the city’s highest concentration of Muslims.
Bilal Mahmood is a politician who is not above taking advantage of a photo op. During his recent election campaign he claimed he was a neuroscientist, as well as an economist. Although he may have studied these things briefly, he doesn’t have a degree in either, and eventually removed those claims from his website.
TV newscasts show City Supervisor Mahmood pacing back and forth outside the doorway to the CBP office at the airport, cell phone to his ear, trying to find answers without interacting much with the group that was to host the two men on a speaking tour in the Bay Area.
Among those ready to host the detained Palestinians were members of the Kehilla Community Synagogue. Kehilla is an unaffiliated Jewish congregation and synagogue. It was founded in 1984 by “people who wanted a synagogue that would be a spiritual home for politically progressive people who felt no connection with traditional synagogues.”
Kehilla is reminiscent of groups such as the United Church of Christ, whose members seem more interested in applying their interpretation of Christianity to social causes than in Christianity itself.
The Kehilla staff use pronouns including “them/they” and “mixed.”
Kehilla is inspired by Arthur Waskoff, who, longtime Jihad Watch readers will remember, actively supported the Ground Zero Mosque project.
Kehilla also openly supports and partners with the pro-Hamas Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). “Pro-Hamas” is defined in this case as:
- Support for terrorists such as Rasmea Odeh;
- Framing of October 7 in historical terms without moral clarity;
- Alignment with groups that openly support armed jihad, such as the Houthis, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, etc.; and
- Lack of unequivocal support for Jewish self-determination.
The fact that the group includes “Jewish” in its name, when it is a political — not a religious – organization, is further evidence of its support for the goals of Hamas. The illusion that there is “Jewish” support for the goals of Hamas is something the front groups for Hamas in this country appreciate very much.
A prominent member of Kehilla interviewed on TV is Seth Morrison, who is also the Treasurer of JVP. Like many people, Morrison’s political awareness over time took a 180-degree turn. While in the past, he proudly supported the Jewish National Fund, he now supports Hamas-aligned groups such as JVP. The turning point came when he believed that the JNF was involved with the eviction of the Sumarin family from their home in the Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem.
That was the turning point for him. He now saw the Jewish National Fund’s practice as part of an enterprise to Judaize the area.
Oscar Wilde is credited with saying something to the effect that “once you have loved someone, you will do anything for him except love him again.”
This certainly seems to apply here.
Morrison’s growing political sophistication led him from support of Israel to support for the twenty-first century’s version of the Nazis.
Morrison vouched for the Palestinian men as “totally peace loving people.” Another member of the welcoming committee at the airport was Ben Linder, a board member of J Street, which supports the “two state solution” and supported the Ground Zero Mosque; J Street described the two Palestinians as men of peace whose “weapons are a camera, and the written word.” Thank goodness they are men of peace, or their “weapons” might be Molotov cocktails and M-75 rockets.
The people at the airport are wearing “Free Palestine” and “End the Occupation” T-shirts, as well as Palestinian flag pendants, but not one Star of David.
Groups of this kind give Jews a bad name.
Someone else who won’t be wearing a Star of David at the airport — or anywhere, for that matter — is the San Francisco Bay Area executive director of the the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). This is the same Zahra Billoo who told an audience not to make friends with Jews, whom she called “polite Zionists.” This was so bad that the organization she works for placed her on sabbatical until the heat died down.
Billoo has mourned the death of Hamas top dog Ismail Haniyeh on social media, and even cheered at Joe Biden’s announcement that he had cancer. TV stations are not interested in any of that sort of thing. Instead, they put Billoo on to “call” for Customs and Border Protection to reverse course in her whiny voice, as if that were going to change anything.
In the end, we still do not know what happened to lead the Palestinian men to be sent back to Jordan. But judging from the company they attract, one might wonder if it had anything to do with support for terrorism.

That said, it would have been better had these 2 Palis been declined their visas in Jordan itself by the US embassy there. Or at the immigration counter at Amman Airport, before spending the several hour journey to SFO to be put back on another flight just as long. Maybe the State Department should have desks at foreign airports to verify the validity of visas before allowing passengers to board long flights to the US

Easier said than done, they may have had fake passports and visas, or been on a terror watchlist. I don’t feel bad at all about their time on the trip if they were violating Americas laws.

Many people may not realize that having a tourist or educational vista etc… approved by a US embassy abroad while sufficient to travel to the usa is not a guaranteed entry. Those visitors still have to pass through immigration once they set foot here.
